Louis, being the tenor, sings the melody while the other boys mostly harmonize around him. It's like that in a lot of their songs which is why Louis' voice is so prominent. On the songs where Louis sings harmony he doesn't stand out as much.

Liam’s the king of harmonies. His voice always stands out on harmonies, much in the same way that Louis’ stands out in choruses.

Facts. I’ve been trying to explain this to someone else. If you’re on main melody your voice has to stand out because it’s almost like you’re singing a solo and the harmonies around your vocals are embellishments. The main harmonisers were Liam and Niall.

The first time I heard this song, Liam’s velvety tone just captured and held my attention right from the beginning. It’s the way his first verse has very few instrumentals behind it, you can hear his clear pitch perfect voice in all its beauty and it’s honestly breathtaking in parts.

If you watch any 1D harmonies video, Liam’s the one who harmonises the most and sounds the best paired with every one of the guys. I guess it’s something to do with the fact that he can match all of their vocal ranges. You can hear Louis’ beautiful voice above the fray in choruses, because he’s always on the main melody, but he doesn’t tend to harmonise. The harmonies were mostly Liam and Niall. In almost all live performances Liam does a mix of backing, high and low harmonies.

I have only been listening to One Direction for 4 years(Sign of the times led me to them) I see how they had a massive teenage following, but believe they would have an even bigger following now, I am 64 and appreciate how under rated they were to the anti One Directioner's, I was guilty of not been interested in them because my son is the same age as them, I now own everything they have released as a band and individuals (sorry except Zayn, not my cup of tea) writing and production certainly knew how great their 5/4 voices harmonised, I believe if they do ever reunite their fan base would be much broader now :)

You can’t just hear Louis’ voice because his voice is so unique (of course that’s also a reason) but it’s mostly because this is just his part to sing and the other boys sing more softly or they are just not that close to the mic as Louis is.
