Making it a blank state is lazy and doesn’t help anyone. If someone wanted to alter something in the world then by all means alter as much or as little as you want but at least it’s still there. The foundations and conflicts are still there and make it d&d, also useful for when the creative juices run dry lol

Exactly. Crack open the AD&D 2e books on _Forgotten Realms_ deities (i.e., _Faiths & Avatars_ , _Demihuman Deities_ and _Powers & Pantheons_ ) and tell me that collective body of work doesn't lend life to a world. New D&D wiped away most of that awesome flavor.

My favorite Race is also Human. Mostly because many other races in D&D have stats, but they don't have culture. Elves, Dwarfs, Gnomes, I can take the best elements from other RPGs like Warhammer or Pathfinder and add strong Clan and Honor culture in Dwarfs or Bleaching in Gnomes, Elves are special in my eyes for longevity and reincarnation. Many other races don't have that, and because of it I don't gravitate towards them. Humans are kind a different for me, as I think of them more as a part of a culture (is this character from Waterdeep, or from Calimport) and I build them based on values of their homeland. I miss that in most D&D games, where most DMs or Players don't think too much about how alient to human thinking are different races or how incredible variable can they be just by taking inspirations from different real life cultures. Also I'm Polish and for some people I'm a POC. If you think that way, please go away from me.

6:00 with them trying to make the game less racist it always felt really weird to me that they decided to switch the term race to species. Like isn’t that reinforcing the differences between these people? If they were gonna switch it I would have preferred something like ancestries
@crypto662 ай бұрын
Goes to show how they don't even know the meaning of the word. Labeling them as different "species" means hybrids and interbreeding wouldn't be possible.

Easier to refer to it as such, and has a snazzy logo to slap on for thumbnails. Purely for ease of talking about it. Once its out it'll just be "D&D".

One d and d sounds like it's going to be a game for failed directors and improv actors. The 5th edition had its problems, and it looks like the 6th edition is just going to build on them. 5th edition was a bounded system where they really wanted everyone to play the same character. When they relieved the book that added many playable races, they proved that. Want to play as a centaur character? Well, we can't have you be a large character. You're going to have to roleplay as a medium-sized unit. Centaurs are known for their athleticism and strength. 3.5 knew this and gave them a plus 6 strength modifier. You can't have your centaur character greatly stronger than the rest of the players.

I feel like they're just making the setting bland and lifeless. All the flavor, character and potential hooks are being erased. A blank slate doesn't help new dms run a good game. There's very little inspiration for new players and gms
@piratelego12 ай бұрын
Lifeless? I think all the races/species and setting are way more unique now and the illustrations showing several individuals of the same race interacting and living in a community says much more about the setting and gives many different ideas to the player who is creating the character. A way better approach than just a illustration of one individual
@thirdwordbird30112 ай бұрын

@@piratelego1 They are just making them all the same. Drow used to be the evil edgy elfs from below, now they are ... elfs with dark skin. Orcs used to be savage monsters that where not so smart but plenty strong, now they are green humans.
@CritSquid2 ай бұрын
I feel that. Its much easier to remove something from the books that you didnt like, than to come up with all the spice yourself. If i dont want Orcs to be savage .. i just leave that part out. If this continues, all we will have is humans in different colors and with some extra bits. (also Furrys, cause no one messes with Furrys)
@piratelego12 ай бұрын
@@CritSquid Following your same logic, if you don't want a civilized orc, just don't bring it into your game. It's very dumb an intellectual orc mage idea be discouraged by the system and lore because "orcs are stupid"
@maddog1303 ай бұрын
i recently started dm'ing my first campaign and as ive begun absorbing content to get knowledge and such i started to notice how much people inject real life non-sense into a fantasy game. one video about how Orcs are problematic because they have the characteristics of evil, stupid, etc. and arent a playable race. A video about the new rules coming out about how its good that backgrounds decide stat bonus's rather than race because "its weird that elves would have more intelligence than other races". which on that note, now that they are distinctly 'species' instead of races because that is a more proper term to define the races of dnd, its not at all problematic to say another species has more intellect than another. easiest example is Humans compared to just about any other animal in existence. there is just to much of people injecting their 'problems' into a fantasy world that doesnt confine to their world view. even though with the power of homebrew, it always could have. It just irks me that some people are acting like this is something to concern themselves with. certainly by next release Goblins are just misunderstood and misrepresented because of real world racism.
@CritSquid2 ай бұрын
I agree with you, race has gotten a ton of baggage lately and other people just project their damage into the game/world. Sadly if one person doesnt eat spicy, the hole dish has to be bland and you have to season it yourself.
@axel84062 ай бұрын
Personally, I make races even more important. I like the old-school way of making a race and also a class. But then again, I have a unique way of introducing new races and classes in my game.

Just so you know, your argument about race will go straight over these people's heads because to them, all people with a certain level of melanin are one super race.

12:40 the greatest magical transformation sequence since sailor moon Also props for taking the time to better articulate your points and respond to comments! I still don’t agree since as a DM I really quite like the storytelling possibilities that emerge from “humanizing” the evil and making the whole aesthetic a bit more “soft” or idealistic. Regardless I quite liked your video! even if you maybe went a bit to far down the tangent of debunking the “racist orcs” trope, though that’s a nitpick from a random person on the internet on what is otherwise emblematic of good internet discourse!
@justhero2 ай бұрын
I get what you mean by adding that element into your villains. Its definitely preferential from DM to DM, personally I feel like in recent years the trope has been overdone which culminated here. Ofc, a well done villain is a well done villain at the end of the day and I respect it if thats the way people want to run their games. In terms of the orc tangent- yeeeeaahhh, my bad. Second video in a row thats happened, I get way too caught up in talking about that stuff, but I promise that'll be the last time I talk about them for a while lol. But yeah, I wanna keep things civil and open for discussion round these parts. Thanks for commenting!
