Sailing Soulianis

Sailing Soulianis

Күн бұрын

Even though the mast is back up and we’re officially a sailboat again(!), we’ve got a scary long list of boat projects to complete before we can leave the dock in Mobile, Alabama.
In this video we bend the sails back on, replace the kitchen plumbing, and do a bit of varnishing, finish woodworking and more engine room insulation. We also make a modification to the bulkhead between our chain locker and forward v-berth locker to allow easier stowage of half of our anchor rode further aft. We’re trying to redistribute the weight because our boat is a little bow-heavy.
Hope you enjoy!
Lauren & Kirk

I absolutely love your videos. Your connection with each other really shines through. And the quality of your videos is superb. Kirk’s comment about having to do other projects to get a boat project done really hit home with me. Several years ago I followed up on a childhood dream and purchased a semi abandoned farm. Every time I had a project to do I ended up doing a whole handful of other things to get that project done. And upon reflection, most days the original project had never been completed. A big thumbs up to both of you for following your dreams and sticking with it.

Last week we bought $500 in field fencing and T posts to build a paddock for our two pet goats. I'm told our hill (ridge) is the residual of a receding glacier, hence I can"t quite pound in the T post, since I have rocks 3 to 15 inches in diameter I have to dig them out, and pour some concrete for corner posts. My job is to enjoy the work ;-)

When I bought my boat the previous owners had removed the Origo two burner with oven alcohol stove, and installed a small refrigerator in its place, then put a countertop over where the range had been and installed a microwave. They were evidently strictly day sailors on Lake St. Clair. My surveyor said, "You want that stove back." So I made it a condition of the sale. Best advice ever. The seller tried to argue and say, you'll really want that refrigerator and microwave. And I said, "Dude, how am I going to use that stuff on the hook? We need to be able to cook, and the built in ice chest is more than big enough for cruising." I took the refrigerator and microwave out and put everything back to the way it was. I was reminded of it when I saw you ditching the microwave. Love your adventures.

I have been guilty of trying to do to much work in to short of time thinking I have plenty of time and like you get overwhelmed and get none of them completed over the years I learned to account for mistakes extra travel for material and inexperience but what’s helped me the most is don’t start something new until you have completed the last one. 100% done , never say I will finish it later

MUST KEPT THE FAITH, you have come a long way and accomplish a lot........... I have sailed for many years my next boat will be my 17th, at 70 I realize boating and maintenance go together....always no matter the boat. Some of the maintenance is safety some for comfort.... soon most of your maintenance will be small items especially I see that what you've done so far is outstanding work, more detailed and correct than most. I watch about 5 others going through and doing what you two are, soon the projects will be fewer and the sailing will be more... I like the idea of identifying projects and doing them in a day, which you'll be able to do soon.... so then you might want to set aside a day out of the week to take care of the ongoing projects i.e. declare a Maintenance Tuesday for example... Please don't get discouraged now you've done the hard stuff. Besides you are my favorite sailing couple, you've already done more miles that most sailors will every do on the water.........You are awesome! Love your videos... I am increasing my patron pledge to help you in that regard....BTW Keep the beard, Lauren keep the smiles coming........ :-)

It sounds a little unusual ... however I really look forward to every fix and maintenance that you folks work on. In my very limited sailing opportunities; I have found that taking care of the boat and understanding how different parts work will pay handsome dividends. The penalty for being uncaring ( to the boat) is ... PAIN Keep up your excellent videos, I really appreciate it. I am working up to owning my little boat .... as is now I help out on other's boats.
