We run a Deutz Fahr DX4.70 98HP turbo 1986, 38 year old bought at 2 year old in 1988 that bosses a 2500gallon tanker and bales with a McHale F5500

Great video I had an identical 399 to yours from 2007 till 2021 when I traded it for a 6480. It was a great tractor and only it had a mishap I’d still have it. I actually miss it at times. I might buy it back in the future. Well done on a great video you done the tractor justice

Thanks! I did try to give it the credit it deserves they’re a really good tractor in my opinion! We’d definitely miss ours if we ever replaced it, probably never will replace it just maybe one day get a 2nd big tractors. What mishap did you have with yours?

@@farmerwillmellor510 the hitch wasn’t caught properly and the tank came off going down a hill and pushed the whole back end shaft and connecting bits up around 3 inches. I actually got it fixed after 7 weeks and second hand parts but it only lasted a few hours till it banged again and the gearbox was gone. Down to the same problem. I hadn’t got another 7 weeks to wait. I let it go.

I learnt to drive at the age of 12 on a Massey I don't recall the model number, but it did have a multi shift lever, which was like an extra gear, which made it go a lot faster.

Great video can’t wait for the 550 tour especially if it was supplied by John I fearn at hassop I also own a 550 and would recommend a claas mower there excellent quality

Thanks Peter! Yes our 550 was originally supplied by John I fearn at hassop when it was new but we brought it 2nd hand in 2009 from John Bownes in Cheshire. We have run Claas corto mowers in the pastes but have never tried their disc mowers

Good tractor walk round Will, i drove 500 , 600, and 2000 series MFs never got the chance of a 300 series at all 🙄😕 the multi power gearbox did indeed not have any engine braking in low multi but in high Multi you could stop the tractor going up a hill and not use the brakes the transmission held the tractor and to pull away again just flick to low and away you went , the most common problem with the multi power gearbox was the hydraulic pump started to lose pressure and then in the high multi was like the clutch was slipping 😞 just my way of thinking but you are far better off running classics like the 300 series bought and paid for than paying over 100 thousand pounds for a new one which is not going to be as reliable 👌

Thanks Bob! We do still have a 550 from the 500 series they’ll be a video of that at some point! Never had any experience of the multi power box myself but I bet at the time it was a revolutionary invention for the Massey Ferguson brand!👍

It was revolutionary at the time Will unfortunately due to lack of training in the use of the multi power box there were a huge amount of accidents with many drivers getting seriously injured and unfortunately also think there were one or two deaths due to lack of engine braking in low multi power and tractors running away down hill😕 one farm local to us only had their new 135 multi power 3 days before it ran away downhill demolished a couple of stone walls and left the front axle on the first wall 😳 thankfully driver escaped with just bruising as he jumped off the tractor 👍

Another good video will👍 spot on with your comments! These British built tractors are made to last and are good to get parts for. They’re dependable and get the job done! Good to see you look after and appreciate your tractors. The cost of any major repair after 30years of ownership will be minimal offset against the years of service the tractors given you & it will still be worth close to what you paid for it as you’ve kept it looked after. Definitely a credit to you and your family. Looking forward to the next tour👍
