Jukeboxes were definitely still a thing in the 80s. We had them everywhere from small mom and pop restaurants to chain restaurants to classic little dines (not to mention the bars and arcades). There were different kinds, from the standalones like you see in the video to individual little ones at diner and chain restaurants booths and tables. The difference is while in the 50s and 60s they were a nickel or a dime in the 70s they went up to a quarter and by the 80s they went all the way up to $1 a play at most places. As for Joan, the song the video started with "Bad Reputation" was actually used in the movie "Kick-ass" and it's as adrenaline-fueled as one would think.

Joan has been called “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Godmother of Punk,” and the “Original Riot Grrrl,” having helped open doors for women in the music industry, and she's been an inspiration for many, always following her dreams and doing what she loves - and doing it her way. Joan (with the BH) clearly went out of her way to avoid making this sound like a typical high-polished pop-laden album, which she could have done. But she wanted it to have a raw and edgy "old-school" rock feel, that combined the best elements from punk, glam and metal, with '50s and '60s rock & roll, a fierce DIY spirit, and a disdain for conformity.
@Cynthorrpg13 ай бұрын
She's one of my favs but many folks don't know when she was in her teens and up through the runaways era one of her idols was Suzi Quatro who has the same gritty voice. Joan uses/copies Suzi's facial expressions like the eye opening thing and the growl. I don't mind because i think she does it even better than the OG Suzi.

Got to see Joan Jett and The Blackhearts twice, once from even closer than I am to my TV right now, at a club in Boston, and later they were the openers for ZZ Top at The Centrum in Worcester, Mass., a fairly large arena. In both cases Joan OWNED the room and was a dynamic presence on the stage. She was also in a really cool movie called "Light Of Day" with Michael J. Fox (Back To The Future) and Michael McKean (Laverne & Shirley, This is Spinal Tap). She was very good in the movie, and at the end she sang the title song, and ended with a spirited "Thank You Very Much!" BTW, she is VERY cute up close.

We made one big mistake: we forgot to decide how many times to repeat the bit at the end, and it had already gone on too long when I thought to hold up a hand of fingers and count down. The song in the beginning is “Bad Reputation” from her first solo record in 1980 (right before forming the Blackhearts). The Runaways (Joan’s first band, all teenage girls) had a reputation for being “jailbait” rock and had a reputation for partying. However, after the Runaways broke up in Spring of 1979 Joan went into a DEEP depression. She contemplated joining the military, but MUSIC was her PASSION. At first she didn’t know WHAT to do. When the Runaways were a band the MEDIA and the INDUSTRY all told them “girls can’t play rock n roll” (something the Go-Go’s and other female artists and bands would deal with) and at this point it LOOKED like they all won and were laughing at Joan. She started drinking REAL heavy and abusing drugs badly. She hung out w/ “punks” from the L.A. scene such as Sid Vicious and others, that got her labeled as a trouble maker, thus she had a bad reputation among the industry and NO ONE would sign her to a record deal (23 major and minor record labels sent her rejection letters which she still has to this day), so Joan and her manager started their OWN label “Blackheart Records” and put the first 2 albums on their own. The SONG “Bad Reputation” was about her attitude towards the haters. “Everyone can say what they wanna say, it never gets better anyway. So WHY should I care ‘bout a bad reputation anyway? Oh no!” AFTER the song and album “I Love Rock n Roll” became HUGE they RE released the song “Bad Reputation” as a single and NOW became a hit!!! They recorded a video for it basically giving a middle finger to all the record companies that told her NO, worth checking out. The song would also become a staple in Pop Culture being used as the opening song for the show “Freaks and Geeks” and used in films such as “10 things I Hate about you” and “Shrek” and recently as Professional Wrestler Ronda Rousey’s walk out theme song.

“I Love Rock n Roll" song, the story: When Joan Jett was in her first band the Runaways (all teenage girl punk/metal influenced band) they toured London, England. The Arrows, in England, used this song as a "B-side" song to one of their hits in 1975 and when Joan heard it she INSTANTLY wanted to do a cover of it on the 2nd Runaways album. However, since the Runaways already did a cover with "Rock n Roll" in the title on the first album in 1976 (Lou Reed's "Rock n Roll"), the girls didn't want to have another song with "Rock n Roll" in the title and look "cheesy" so Joan held onto the song for a bit. Once the Runaways broke up and Joan started to pursue a solo career she originally recorded this song (as well as another one) w/ Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols (another English Punk Rock group), It's on youtube if you want to hear it. When Joan formed the Blackhearts in 1980 (after she released her first solo record as just "Joan Jett", later renamed "Bad Reputation") her manager thought it was a good idea to RE-record the song w/ the Blackhearts and make it a stronger and less "Sophomoric" sounding and THIS is the result. The song went to #1 on the Billboard chart for 8 weeks in a row!!! The original video was shot in color, however Joan HATED the red jumpsuit they gave her so they decided to release it in black and white and they loved it because of its vintage look. The color version is now available as well
