For my mind, if you want official products, self-control is the #1 thing. - Don't buy things just because they're limited - Don't buy things just because they're "a good deal" - Don't chase the meta, especially when the things you buy now because they're good will be out in a month. - Don't buy things you won't use (whatever your use is). - Don't overbuy in excitement Most of us in the hobby buy _way_ more models than we need to. There's a reason that Pile Of Shame became a meme. If all of us exercised a little restraint and just bought what we actually needed, rather than acting like a 4yo given free rein in a lego store, we might do a lot better.

Buying individual sets seems like you're being a rube with how expensive they are, but when you realise how slow painting actually is, even immediately buying full price sets as you fully complete the previous one would be infinitely more in your favour and against GW's interests than how most people engage with this stuff. I have so many tyranids because "they're going to be in Leviathan, if I buy the combat control etc. I'll have a huge combined force". Nevermind that while I like them I had no intention of collecting tyranids in at least the next year, probably not for multiple years if ever.

Two things that really helped me out. 1.Almost every kit is an Ork kit. I got a Bomber jet which im using the extra bits to put on a cheaper Necron flyer and turn a Rino into another bomber so im using all the bits.This includes using the HH Spartans as Battlewagons. And the Blood Bowl Orks as Mega armored nobs and gretchin. 2. The HH range is one giant SM and CSM range to pull from. By getting an Age of Darkness box, you can simply make the Beakie bodies up to be used for all sorts of parts. Use the Terminators as CSM terminators/Relic terminators for SM. The contemptor as a Hellbrute. The big axe dude as a DG plague lord or Exocutioner. If your creative grab some deamons and slap it on some dudes to make CSM possessed. And before I forget, grabbing a HH box of assault marines nets you the shields to slap on normal SM and kit bash them to be Bladeguard. Also glue the special weapons to the arse of a normal dude so you can choose what weapon he uses for the game.

Playing smaller games is underrated advice. I remember in 5th edition the norm was to check with your opponent, and I saw games anywhere from 750 points for a skirmish to 1750 for a large battle. 2000 points was considered huge, and was more of an all day game for weekends. I recently played a 1500 point game with a friend, and it was a breath of fresh air. We had more room to maneuver on the board, and weren't just throwing units in our lists to fill out points after taking the important stuff.

Conversion is a big money saver, especially for characters. If a character is just a fancier looking normal soldier, then just buy a box of 10 normal soldiers and slap on decorative bits to make characters. A single character model typically costs half the price of a box of 10 troops, so if you can get a mere 2 characters through conversion you have broken even on cost and got more plastic out of it. Boxes that can build multiple different unit types or multiple loadouts of the same unit are another great source of bits for more conversion, providing the extra equipment to turn basic troops into more elite units. If you're playing a Space Marine army, especially Chaos or more firstborn themed, it needs to be said that Horus Heresy boxes tend to have double the models of equivalent 40k boxes for similar price. Even if you don't want to use firstborn models, it's at least worth looking at the equipment boxes with the special and heavy weapons, and especially the upcoming melee weapons box.

Cutting to the chase: 3D printing is by far cheaper and will force GW to eventually compete. Yes, the disadvantage is the up-front cost and time to learn, but if you're a busy person you either don't have the time for the hobby or the money to pay for commissions. While it's mainly marines, who now just have flat out better alternatives, especially due to GW's mishandling of models, such as the Sanguinary Guard. Here's a genuine tip you probably didn't know. Small toy stores. Sometimes you'll find them with stock that's over a decade old and you can buy boxes at a discount price. I've gotten two 'start collecting' boxes for half off.

The disadvantage is also having resin models, fragile, lower quality, can't be used at GW events. If you're a serious competitive player this can be an issue as there are large tournaments at Warhammer world
@aqz7603
@aqz7603 Ай бұрын
@@jacket2848 Resin models arent fragile unless you're using water washable. If you cure them properly and use a tenacious resin mix (5:1 works) or use an ABS like, they will be durable enough. Either way even with plastic models, dropping them off a table or anything is not something you should be routinely doing anyway. As for quality, unless you closely inspect a properly printed model its virtually indistinguishable on the tabletop. As for tournaments, plenty of people bring resin prints or recasts and simply lie about it. If you get a 1:1 and paint it, outside of weight its very difficult to identify a real model from a print. It's not like they are physically picking up and inspecting every single model. Of course, if you don't want to do this anyway you can just bring your models to non GW events or tournaments for the very few people that are serious about the competitive scene.

Two things. 1. As a 3D printer guy, it always pain me a bit when someone tells others to "just buy a 3D printer" without telling them that 3D printing is a hobby and skill set all by itself and not simple "press button to print" machines, as cheap Chinese printers need routine maintenance and parts break and fail often. But good on you for at least warning about resin fumes. 2. As a Death Korps of Krieg fan, I looked deep into WWI and WWII miniatures and found you can probably kit out damn near a full DKoK army on these alone. WWI Germans give you the Krieg-like helmets, gas masks, etc. Pretty much everything iconic about them except great coats and LasGuns. Plenty of that era artillery could probably be used, too. Only thing that stopped me from doing this myself is that there Krieg releases on the horizon (and I'm busy with my Adepta Sororitas army).

Another third party minis company that does cheap sci-fi minis is Northstar, specifically their Stargrave range. "Troopers" in particular are generic rank and file infantry by design, and come in a box of 20 for £20. For the Wargames Atlantic, the World War 2 infantry was a bad example (though you get a lot in that box to be fair). Other examples are Ooh Rah (they look like the marines from aliens), Bulldogs (praetorian), Cannon Fodder (guys in jump suits that make good conscripts or generic infantry), Iron Core (kasiken or space marines) and many others. They also recently crowd funded a bunch of traitor guard sets called "The Damned". Most kits are 24 to a box, but this varies. They also don't come with bases. Some of their older kits are hard to pair up the arms, so be careful with that. Finally, I want to mention their fantasy range sometimes has sci-fi options. I think their ogre kit has an option for Ogryns.

@@morhal7306 Check out the printed warhammer subreddit. They don't allow scans, but in their FAQ and startup guide they'll show you the websites that people get most of the proxies from. If you do a tiny amount of digging and poking around you'll find stuff that is so similar nobody would know - and if you check the new releases for some websites every day then you can nab a few scans that people put up before GW has them taken down. A couple days ago there were 6 pages of GW scans that were up for a few hours. Two pieces of advice - don't worry about 1 to 1 accuracy with GW models, because unless you're playing with hyper neurodivergent folks who study every mini meticulously, you seriously can't tell the difference, and I'm telling you this as someone who thought the same as you in the past. The second piece of advice - most scans are not amazing in terms of printability. People who make their own models which are similar to GW sculpts are artists who typically care, and often times their stuff will come pre supported and be easy to work with. A scan might not even be a properly solid model that you may have to repair in a 3D modeling software before you can even begin to support it, which is a pain in the butt to do. But rest assured, you can definitely find scans when you start looking regularly.

Ordering from countries with weaker currencies can be even more affordable than the UK prices. For example, a Combat Patrol box is usually 100 GBP which at todays rate converts to about 120 EUR or 125 USD. However, it also converts to about 1400 SEK and the suggested retail price in Sweden for most boxes is 1250 SEK (90 GBP). With regards to 3d printing, FDM quality has gotten really close to resin miniatures so it's not a path to consider even for households who might have trouble handling the toxic chemicals and fumes from resin printing.

Played from 3rd to 6th edition and jumping back in now, the #1 irritation for me are codexes & battletomes. I had way more codexes than armies back in the day. I loved flipping through them to get into the lore of the faction. They basically acted like one giant advertisement for people to begin to get invested in an army and invest hundreds into model kits. By reading one I’d get inspired to paint a particular sect from that lore and/or miniature dioramas found inside them. $70cad feels nuts to me when they used to sell them for $20. They update them way too frequently now and the books themselves just don’t pull me in like they used to. In part because the high cost and low return now deter me from just picking one up on a whim.

Independent stockists and the FLGS are a godsend with the price barrier to the hobby that GW seems intent on hammering into Buckminsterfullerene. Particularly when you want specific items. The trouble I had getting Killa Kans and Deff Dreads from an actual GW store was laughable, constantly getting told I'd have to order them online or through the store... looked in the local indie store - there they were. Sold.

The devastator squad always comes with a sixth pair of legs so part of my kit bashing is I use those extra legs to make lieutenants. The other day I use some spare bits from a deathwatch veterans kit which has a caped back and weapons as well as deathwatch upgrade sprue I got out of the deathwatch Terminator captain. I made a new first born lieutenant who is a noted deathwatch veteran of my chapter. I've made two Lieutenants this way, giving me cheap character models

Up until I retired last year, we ran a hobby store. And I can tell you the markup for GW sucks. If you’re finding something at 20% off the seller is only making between 10%-15%. And when customers come in expecting these discounts made me want to get rid of it, especially when they want you to order a minimum quantity every month.

Simulating gameplay to determine is the list is right for you. Also waiting several months into a new editions before buying anything. Watching model reviews and studying competitions to get a better idea if those models are even worth it. Basically the same principle when trying a new video game can apply. Dont buy impulsively and study what you want to buy more closely.

I second kitbashing. Rather than spend 120+ on 6 BGV I bought a crusader squad kitbashed the marines as BGV and the neophytes as scouts for like $80 (with 3d prints from my lgs). Then if I get a 2nd box I finish a scout squad and I either have a 2nd squad of BGV or 6 bodies to kitbash in to something i want down the line. Rather than buy 15 sanguinary guard (300) i bought 15 jump Intercessors body/legs off ebay and turned them in to Sanguinary Guard for like... 80.

Although more discount I can get if buying big boxes but I am also glad that the higher price point per money spend push me to look for other GW kit to kit bash (like Hive Scum for Inquisitorial Agent). 😂 But then I can only hope if there is a cheaper alternative to kitbash Corvus Blackstar

IMO Warhammer is a very expensive GAME but it's not really that expensive as a hobby (at least, comparing it to other adult hobbies). If people just bought one kit after they were finished the previous kit they would spent far less money I imagine. This is coming from someone with 4 of those home depot 102L boxes full of unopened 40k in his basement - consider it a lesson learned. My new years resolution is going to be to actually get through at least one of these boxes.

Just invest 250$ into an Elegoo Mars, buy a bottle of resin for 15$ and print a whole ass army. You print some terrain and even a bust and maybe something practical for your home and the investment has already been recouped. Hell, print 3 or 4 squads and you got your money back already with GW prices these days. I made that investment a few months ago and have already printed a whole Custodes army and enough expensive character units for my other armies that the cost to benefit ratio is getting better each week. I will never not see this is as a good hobby investment.

Mars 4 Ultra is on sale for $190 right now and prints at 18 microns, same as the Mars 5. It's not just broke people who can't afford it. Price of entry is so high, especially considering the main target demo for big boxes is kids who are new to the hobby. Not many parents are willing / able to commit the way GW want them to. They either nope out, or buy small bits and pieces, which lessens the experience for the kids (because they can't play the way they see it being played) and are thus more likely to drop out, in a self-fulfilling prophecy. £250 for someone who is committed to the hobby already is a lot less than £250 as a starting point for someone who has a good chance of deciding it's not for them after 2-3 actual games.
