Additional tips: Periodically yell at your foe to go faster, that is to remind him he should play fast and efficiently instead of slowly. Lose your measuring tape? Carve one on your forearm as you are less likely to forget that at home. Eat some of your opponents minis while he isn't looking as that speeds things up, a sporting man would also eat his own. At first you may only be able to sneak in the occasional guardsmen or grot but real masters of their craft will devourer a whole stompa the moment their opponent is distracted. Bring regular cocaine for you and your opponent, it's cheap compared to meta chasing and will definitely shave off an hour or three of gameplay. Don't forget to shadow box during your opponent's turn, this is to keep you spry and energized.

Jokes aside, the heavier you go, the simpler it gets. I started playing at the tail end of 9th as pure infantry guard, and it was nearly paralyzing to keep track of everything just because of the shear bulk of ordering, moving, and firing with an ass ton of Cadians. Then I switched to a narrower list, mostly tanks and some elite infantry like Kasrkin and Scions, and things got a lot smoother because I just had less numbers to deal with.

As a tournament player: 1) TALK to your opponent. This is a time saver. Although it is a tournament we collaborate. Talking about your intent and asking your opponent saves a lot of time. "I put my models 1" away from that ruins wall, is that ok?" Goes a long way helping your opponent to understandyour intention, prevents discussions (but this model is only 0,8" away from the ruin) and saves time measuring and fiddeling around. "I want to place my unit so you can not see me if you move over there" helps you to establish your intent, your opponent can premeasure and check Line of sight and helps you setting up your models (for example by placing dice indicating a border of visibility). This also helps you saving time as you dont have to run back and forth to check LOS and your opponent KNOWS he wont get LOS by moving in this way (saves a lot of time to both players and no bad situations of "oh but I actually see the tip of your sword over there" happen) Talking is extremely important in 40k. It is a social game. 2) Prepare your dice. This also saves time. I usually use 4 sets of 10 dice. So if a unit has 26 attacks, I pick up the red, the blue, and 6 of the white dice instead of counting them every time. 3) Premeasure in your opponents turn. If I want to take an objective, I can already measure the distance and decide if I have to advance next turn or not. I can already measure out line of sight on a focus target for my next movement phase, so I already know if I get enough units to shoot or if I need to adjust my plans. 4) Dont panic, depending on your army you will have some uneventful turns. With my Sisters for example, turn 1 and 2 most often is just moving in position for your "go turn" and collecting miracle dice to unload them later. So I probably get away with 20 mins for 2 turns, which leaves me around 80 minutes for the last 3 turns. Turn 5 is usually also pretty short as there are only a few key actions left that wil actually score you points. I dont need to roll out this melee combat in the corner when the outcome does not matter on the scoring sheet. 5) Learn your rules!
@Seijik47024 ай бұрын
Also it's ok if your first and second turns are a bit slower as those are the information and action heavy turns. I totally agree with rule 1. COMMUNICATE!!!!! I generally hand my army cards over to my opponent so they don't have to ask me those questions. I have their army pulled up on a list builder and mines on the 40k app. Don't just rest during the other players turn. Actively plan for what your next moves will be in accordance to how his turn is shaking out.

You don't feel like part of the point of a tournament is to test their skill and prove your knowledge of tactics is superior? And then saying what your intent is and helping them avoid gotcha moments etc. would be giving them an advantage in a competition? I'm not saying that's how I play in games, I definitely agree we should be sharing information and I generally try to display to my opponent any options they have etc, but if I were in a tournament, it kinda seems against the point of proving your better, which is why I don't do them.

@@GeneralJerrard101 It is usually common courtesy shared by most players I played against in tournaments. We try to avoid "gotcha moments".You dont HAVE to go out of your way, but most competitive players do and it makes the game a lot more enjoyable. I also found that the tourney crowd in general is more pleasant to play against than a random pickup game. As you said, you want to win on merit of having better tactics and skill - not because you opponent forgot a rule. Reminding players about things like reaction moves (at least once) or special abilities (this model hits overwatch on a 2+) is usually done. As a personal observation: The reason why you dont need to remind a very good player about abilities most of the time is because he will ASK you every time "can this unit advance and charge? Does this have a rection move? What is their gun range? Can this unit heroic intervene? What are your defensive strats?"
@jacket28484 ай бұрын
@@GeneralJerrard101 no, not at all. How does it make somebody better to have "gotcha" moments? If you ever play competitive games you'll see that people almost exclusively play this way. It's a fair question to ask something like "if I place this here, is there any way at all your tank can move to shoot this?" It helps me not have to stop, open your book and read it mid game, to know if you have any advance and shoot stratagems or outlying situations.

For me, the most important step in playing faster was sorting my dice. I always set up 2x20 dice, 20 red and 20 black in rows of 4x5. Need to take 18 shots? Grab three rows and 3 more dice from row four. It might sounds tedious to always rearrange them, but you can do it, while your opponent is making saves, or doing his phases, and you get a good feeling for picking up dices in 5-s, and get really fast at throwing. This helped me from playing a game for 3,5 hours to go under 3 hours by a lot (sometimes we can finish in 2,5 hours).
@vancetaylor90544 ай бұрын
I've started trying to do this. How many dice is too many to roll all at once? My last game I opted to use different color dice for each weapon profile and felt it like too many to roll together.

@@vancetaylor9054 Depends on the size of your hand and the size of the dice :D Usually I would say, if you go past 20 by a lot, roll them in 10s, 15s, 20s (Like you have 54 dice to roll, roll 2x20 then 1x14). I use small dice, and I have a fairly large hand, so I can roll all 40 if needed. The different colors is also a good idea, but for something with more then 3 weapons (like a Repulsor Executioner) I would just go 1 by 1, since it takes more time explaining which color is which then actually just rolling :D

Now time to look at the result and remind me of his special rules while doing so (sustained hit and what not). Then look again to make sure no mistake were made. Now onto the wound roll! In addition, I've found there's little point counting success vs failure, announcing it, and re-assembling the dice pool. In the few games I've played so far, I've noticed it's usually better to just remove the failures and reroll whatever's left. It's faster, easier, and doesn't impede accuracy at all. Certain keywords (notably lethals/sustained/devastating) can alter things a little, and taking your time during a cinematic moment is fun, but for general purpose volume of fire, it can cut roll times in half, especially when Xd6 damage or FNP gets involved.

I really feel there is so much unnecessary stigma around playing with a clock. IMO it’s the best way to play 40K - especially if you are limited for time (at a tournament or at a FLGS with a hard stop). I think clock should be a basic 40K skill that you learn before heading to a tourney. It’s there to ensure that both players have control over whether they get 5 turns in. Which is important because a game played to t3/4 is an inherently different game than a 5 turn game. Clocks should never be a weapon and people should be reasonable but at the end of the day if you lose on a clock (in a comp setting) the only person to blame is yourself. You had the same amount of time as your opponent.

I struggle with time (couple of hours for 1k, 5 hours for 1500) aside from practice (which cant really get much of aside from a game a month at most, i dont see much in this video that i either dont already do or would actually help me and not cause further issues. know your rules-comes with practice easy access rules-i have datacards prep squad- benefit of hosting i can have my army laid out ready to drop on my desk next to the table movement trays- not really an issue, only usually have 1 or 2 10 man squads, and they are not hard to move don't roll pointless dice: maybe plan in opponents turn- i can get the gist of a plan, but most usually has to be redone as some key part of that plan gets wiped out scorekeeping- i use the app, can actually take longer trying to keep tabs on what my opponent is doing than just for myself (what did they draw for secondaries, have they scored, have they used a strat and what was the cost (usually a biggie as there have be several points cp levels havent matched, usually from me missing a strat use)) chatting- could be better, but this meant to be social for me breaks in movement phase- not really an issue intent-falls apart when opponent is strict on things (and is the one trying to hurry things along to go home) choice of army- one reason went knights when first asked to go above 1k talking it out- do sometimes, though with the secret missions you kind of need to play to the end chess clock- too much added stress getting hurried along (and then others not liking being hurried along in return) in the past people have tried to time individual phases and hurry along if taking too long, but that falls apart with tau when the turn is the shooting phase and not a lot else overall i dont really see how i can speed up the game and keep it social, though part of me feels i have be doing too many 1500 games recently and need to drop back down to 1k to learn my new detachments and playstyles better

I often Play 2v2. There is a lot of parallel things possible. I shoot his guys and you shoots her Tanks. Then you could roll for both simultaneously. Additionally with 2v2 one can take a brake and the other will watch for you.

Not directly related, but the playing by intent and maybe not challenging minor calls thing reminded me of my most annoying store tournament from way way back in 5th edition. If I recall, back in 5th you moved and charged 6" instead of rolling. I had a unit I had hoped to charge with, but I measured it as 12.1" so I said out loud, I see that as 12.1" and outside charge range, so I will not move and my opponent agreed. Then during his turn he starts moving his guys in to base to base with me, and I'm like, whoa, what are you doing, it's outside charge range remember? He goes, nope, I measured it as 11.9"...I was winning handily at this point (like by 1500pts as scoring was based on wiped out unit points + a few 100pt bonus objectives), so I figured whatever, I'll let him get an extra 100pts. But what I didn't realize was that those point differentials were the tie breaker and I barely lost out to another player with the same undefeated record. Winner got $75 in store credit and I got $25 because that 1 guy didn't hold to intent and I didn't challenge it.

Not obvious, but play dwarves They are slow, but not all. Bikes can pretty much alpha strike, also vehicles are pretty fast On a second turn, you drop hearthguard, they can kill at least one unit in range(if you play against gsc or something similar , than even a couple)and if they make it to melee (they have a high chance, because champion gives them charge rerols) From your detachment you can mark 2 enemy units for every 1000 pts, they get 2 judgment tokens, which means +1 to hit and wound for the whole army. Depending on how fast you kill at least one marked unit, you get cp, from 3 to 1. Rarely you can’t kill the unit(if you chose correctly) later than 2 turn, and that means 3 cp. These cp will also allow a great damage dealing potential: +ap in melee Sustained hits in range (if target has 2 tokens, than it’s sustained 2) Return fire Rarely I can’t bulldoze my opponent before turn 3 or even 2(that happened, when I was battling knights)

I pretty much play the same list, just different variations of it, almost every game. I usually don't have to look at my rules. Most of the time I only pull them up to show opponents. That said, I play blood angels. I have my list how I like it, now I'm just perfecting playing it. I will say that I seem to win more games when we aren't doing well in the meta.

Also, to play faster, I just eliminate 95% of my enemies army by or on either turn 2 or 3.
@omgponies1114 ай бұрын
Easiest way to play a faster game is to play with less points. Another way to play faster is to have consistent loadouts. If you have 3 Cadian squads have the same loadut for each squad. For hordes like Tyranids Unending swarm you could go for all fleshborer loadout on your Termagants and skip the special weapons for quicker play.

When I have units with multi weapon loadouts, I get the number of dice ready and put them to one side (sometimes on their datacard) whilst it's the opponents turn. I find it works pretty well

I would be wary of picking up models without asking before hand. Some folks come to games to roll dice, local ork player here is one such player. Loves his mismatched dice and likes to roll a lot of them, normally ends up rolling them in batches but it never seems arduous. He ended up playing against a newer player at our FLGS that didn't know this and ended up never having him roll his dice, the ork player would charge a unit into some space marines and the other player would just pick them up, no rolling. Ended up being a boring game for the ork guy and I've yet to see them play together again. Yeah 20 boyz are going to wipe a sm squad most of the time but at least let him roll the power klaw and the characters. Back in 8th & 9th when a unit fought they got a lot of extra movement and could chain to other units relatively easily in some cases so getting into melee was important. One game in particular stands out as particularly bad. Was playing BA into Ultramarines and my opponent would move up a hellblaster squad to wipe out one of my objective holders with a captain behind them to give re-rolls. I'd then position an assault squad to counter-charge the unit and pile-in to the character behind them, but when I would go to shoot something like 3 bolt pistols and 2 flamers into the squad he'd say, "Oh you got them and pick them up". I would have to tell him no I need to roll this because I need some of them to survive so I can charge them. He'd argue that I shouldn't shoot them if I didn't want to destroy them knowing full well that I would need the chip damage from the shooting to wipe the squad in melee. So not a fun experience. Ask before you just pick up a unit. In a similar vein though don't force someone to watch you roll dice if it isn't actually important to you. Had a game recently against tau where a guy deepstruck a unit behind a character and was about to shoot 10 missile pods into him so clearly dead and the game was getting close to the 4 hour mark and it was already a chore playing against this guy so I just wanted it over with. Goes on to say, "Nah, man he might survive he's getting cover." I said it was fine and that it didn't affect anything else but he insisted and ended up using some stratagem for re-rolls and ignoring cover with a markerlight, "Cause you gotta be sure". Low and behold my character died and it was just another 5 minutes stuck playing with this dude. This was the kind of guy that just wants to destroy the opponents army instead of playing the game which ironically I won despite almost getting tabled. Just be careful about it and make sure both parties are having fun.

i play orks and when i run true greetide lists with 200+ models i need help moving them as in i usually have my cousin with me in that ill tell him whats going where and he starts moving models while im on the otherside of the table doing the same, and even with his help one movement phase alone can take 20+ minutes sometimes depending on shit like terrain and layout, when im alone its fucking brutal and i have a habit of starting to feel bad for taking so long and half assing things and making dumb mistakes because im trying to rush which sucks and makes the whole ordeal feel like work and thats not counting when shit gets complicated with units being partally within ruins or a crater/woods ect
@_REDMOND4 ай бұрын
oh also movement trays are fucking junk, they work for about 1 round then the moment you need to bend around another unit or terrain its useless, ontop of taking slightly longer to set up in the first place over just ploping orks on the table, useful movement trays currently do not exist, they need to somehow be both rigid and flexable as well as have the ability to remove spots not just models, you'd think magnets would be the trick here but ive never seen them implemented in a way that actually helps plus nobody knows how they work

just know the stats of your units. It goes fast if you're not checking toughness and strengths every roll.
@DeathInTheSnow4 ай бұрын
"Know your rules" I mean, I would, but there are 2 problems:- 1) GW change the rules every 5 minutes. They changed _movement_ 4 times in a month and it's still broken, requires _a table to move_ and is now largely being ignored by players. And the reason why they change it so frequently? 2) GW can't write rules for shit this edition. We should have seen this coming when they sacked their play testers, but holy hell is it bad. Aside from the aforementioned movement, we also have the flipflopping on Devastating Wounds being mortals, whatever the hell they've done to aircraft, and most recently, _making Rhinos become _*_nesting dolls_*_ because they can't even keep track of keywords._ There is a hilarious duality in 10th where picking units is easy because they're either very broken or very underpowered, but actually _using_ takes most of the game time trying to find up-to-date rules (because they don't update the data sheets; you have to find the errata separately) and then trying to figure out what the hell they're supposed to mean. The best way to solve this? Play a past edition. The rules are finalised, they're compiled online for easy use, and all of the interactions between units was resolved quite some time ago AND there are fewer units in Legends. And most crucially, _you'll have more fun playing._

Best way to finish a game under 3h? Dont play against Tau! It takes forever to complete their shooting on turn 1 and 2. SM are also pretty slow if they have a lot of tank and dreadnought with multiple weapons with various profiles unless the player knows them all by heart.
@ii2bcnii4 ай бұрын
If your opponent is trying to speed you up in 40k, they are trying to cheat by using fast roll and it helps them if you are trying to be quick. If your opponent is rushing you, slow down and watch their dice. Demand they reroll dice to where you can see, not behind a wall. Demand to see thier dice before they pick them up. If your opponent gets frustrated, they are cheating you.

This is SO far from the truth it's basically a complicated way of saying "I've never played Tau and I'm salty because I lose against them".
@In_Purple_Clad4 ай бұрын
@Giby86 I hereby 2nd this opinion. If your opponent knows how to hide their units and actively removes your marker light units, then playing as Tau is a nightmare. You spend half the game going "f me, how the hell do I get the guidance buffs on all my damage dealers?" Why can't my slow broadsides get line of sight around this tiny ruin?" "Wait can I markerlight if I fell back from melee?" Etc, etc
@Giby864 ай бұрын
@@In_Purple_Clad Yeah, but mostly, the glaring mistake is that Tau only play in the shooting phase. Not at all. That's almost trivial, it's just rolling dice. The real important phase is movement, that's what makes or breaks a game.
@In_Purple_Clad4 ай бұрын
@@Giby86 agreed whole heartedly. Movement is so crucial for tau. I've been collecting 'em since 2001. I remember reading an old white dwarf interview article way back in 3rd edition. It was with the original rules writers; they highlighted how they always wanted the faction to have extra Movement tricks and shenanigans in other phases of the game to make up for the lack of a melee combat phase. That principle's held true through every edition. Yes the specific ways and tricks and stratagrms have changed throughout the editions. But Tau players have always had to use their Movement tricks to retain their edge I the opponent didn't just deploy everything on the line in full view of a Tau gunline on turn 1

@@TheCommunistColin for templates you could use the city fight rules (where they replaced templates with D3 or D6 wounds after you made a hit), armour values you get used to really quickly, they only go from 10 to 14 and you would likely have any vehicles you used memorised after one or two games at the most. games would take 1 to 2 hours, not the 4 hour struggles they are now.
