I asked my 27 year old son about this. He said it's right wing online content and the "manosphere", feeding young men more and more radical content and victimization narratives. He himself started to get drawn in, when he was about 19, but he talked to me about the stuff he was seeing, and realized it was all propaganda and BS. It actually had me worried, at the time, but I didn't have to really do much of anything to steer him, he's very smart and saw through it on his own, once I pointed out the fallacies and inconsistencies. Others don't have someone to talk to, or worse, only have people that reinforce the bad information.

Victimization is the keyword here. They can connect to anybody on that wire because its easy to project your personal issues onto something else. That is how the radical right hooks people: tell them they are victims and point them at who is guilty of making them a victim. And once they spark hate in somebody, they can bind and sort of control them. trump isnt the leader of the victim class for no reason. Its the foundation of his political success. There is nothing else reinforcing his supporters belief that none of their problems is of their own making and he alone can fix it for them. Makes life really easy...

And even in the best case scenario, claiming to want gender equality while using a gendered term like feminism is always going to look like a contradiction. It also doesn’t help when people keep using the No True Scotsman fallacy to dismiss and ignore harmful and hypocritical behavior coming from feminists. It’s not as infuriating as when Christians do it, but it’s still not good.

That’s because few people, men as well as women, even know what feminism is. Every time a marginalized group stands up, the group that is holding back their progress LITERALLY steps in and defines what that group wants. We saw it with the push for black people’s civil rights. Back then it was normal for an all white panel to “discuss” what the “blacks” wanted. And what they settled on was busing. NO! What black people wanted was EQUALITY. That’s it. Equal opportunity. If one black person failed, leave the door open for the next and the next. Remove the obstacles that were put in place by racists that led to their racism being institutionalized. Well, it’s the same for women. As soon as women stood up, the opposition started defining the movement. I remember Kaley Cuoco(sp?) famously saying she wasn’t a feminist because she cooks for her family! WHAT? Feminism isn’t about who cooks. Each relationship is different. No one can or should dictate what that is. It’s EQUALITY. End of. Even the term toxic masculinity has been misunderstood. It’s all about putting men in a box. Forcing men to be or act in a certain way or they aren’t men. Black actors and comedians can’t wear a dress. Men can’t be caregivers. Men can’t cry or ask for help even if they are in agony. It’s probably killing a lot of men, literally. Perhaps they should figure out if the participants understand the terms BEFORE they fill out a questionnaire.
@jd190d6 ай бұрын
I remember in the 70's when the media started getting opinions from outspoken feminists and shockingly the most extreme (every movement has them) were interviewed the most (to sell papers) so that became not only the most used criticism by anti-feminists, it started to leak into the general press as the standard views. The extreme views were also quoted with no explanation for their reasoning so it was a set of basically out of context sound bites that were amplified to sell papers and attack the movements. By the 80's the backlash started to set in so many women did not identify as feminists but they still wanted the basic equality and respect. It was an effective way to hurt the movement with a significant portion caused not by malice but sheer greed for shock value to sell print. The other part was caused by malicious actors who saw the feminists movements as a threat to their power base.

There are no shelters for men battered by their wives/girlfriends. If a wife gets pregnant by another man, the husband is liable for wife and child support should they subsequently get divorced. Most women can find male partners if they want them (they may be sharing though), but many men find no partner (they are judged ugly, short, poor, etc). Yes, I am a man, but was raised feminist by an ex-hippy single mother in the SF Bay Area. As I've grown older, I've come to think of Feminism as a bandaid and Humanism as a cure. No, they are not the same thing. The former was useful for a time, but I think in the post-Tumblr/post-Rowling age we are foolish - or dishonest - to fall back to the old dictionary definition of an idealized Feminism to define what it has become, which is often a tool to bludgeon, belittle or just plain harm others, and not just straight men. I think we need to rip that old bandaid off and embrace Humanism completely, for all of our sakes. Feminism has proven itself easily weaponized and easily corruptible, I would say due to its very necessarily narrow focus (that's not strictly a modern thing; I grew up well aware that some prominent feminists of the '70s would have happily considered castrating me as a child - not an exaggeration, look it up). I've never seen Humanism used as a weapon. Now, I consider what I've said above a thoughtful response based on a lot of reflection over a long time. I didn't call names or accuse anybody of being a horrible person. I in no way implied anybody was inferior to myself or my gender, and in fact I am concerned for everybody here, across every spectrum, being treated equally. Yet, somehow I know comments directed at me will question my manhood and ability to get a date or procreate, etc.. That sort of personalized, personally-directed toxic feminism is just the tip of the iceberg I am talking about. It's toxic behavior, in action, by people who identify as Feminist, and act with the privilege they believe that affords them.

I am hoping the collective thought of humans, all humans, can aspire to being humane. Until we elect humane thinking individuals to political offices. Until we stop trying to control each other from an egotistical point of view. We cant be seen as humane. We still have a lot of work to do. I have hope.

I hate the term feminist. How about "equalist" instead. Every person on this planet should have equal rights and voice.
@KxNOxUTA6 ай бұрын
Not how this works. In order to sort out a problem, your MUST name the problem. The reason equity (we don't settle for equality, dear) is NOT the status quo, is because women's rights and archaic feminine traits in ppl of any and no genders in specific are NOT treated with equity. We literally have what you are saying. It is called "human rights movement" and it literally addresses the issues in which rights of humans are hurt regardless of gender. Feminism IS about women and feminine aspects and we get to name it by what is does. By the time we have equity, you will no longer have this movement. But even then, you will likely still have movements that advocate for women specific issues. Because there ARE unique issues that are women specific even in a society that has equity. Please stop framing women's movements as having to revolve around men, too, even in the naming. No. Feminism as a movement absolutely addresses issues that impact me negatively due to e.g. "feminine traits in men" being shamed. Still, it's "FEMININE traits shamed in men" and thus it's feminism. If you hate the term, then it is high time you looked into that part of yourself that hates the term. If you hate the term just because you would like for the lack of equity to stop, then that is very understandable but it is currently NOT our reality. And thus, you should be the first to assure everyone including yourself is so comfortable with the term feminism, that we reach equity and can all go back to concentrating on maintaining human rights and frankly "The rights of all in existence" (aka living beings, nature as such, the very universe that we've been plastering with our satellite garbage). I feel you, if what you log for is peace, but it's disrespectful to fake peace by covering the needs of disregarded groups under a rug, when they are indeed NOT currently in a state of equity at all.

Look guys, I can tell you how to get rid of feminism. Be kind to your women. Be involved in her life. Man up and provide for the children you made together and fight for her equality when she is striving to reach her own goals. Embrace romance with her and really listen to her when you're talking to her. You have to let her know that you NEED her and never want to lose her. If she does leave you DO NOT STALK HER!!

NOT "YOUR WOMEN". You don't own women or men. Try to own yourself.

but what if they make a child and he wants it but she doesnt and what if she decides one day shes bored and she wants some one new should he be forced into child support on her whim should his child be kept from him because all she has to do is say he abuses her youre just a little off base there

Wouldn’t feminists say that expecting the man to provide for the family diminishes the woman? Holding the door is an insult to her independence?

Oh come on, journalists. Meaning 83% of men don't say this. Thankfully, we have 83% of American men who are secure men. They all have moms and sisters they would want to get ahead just like anyone else.
