My neighbor worked this section for 30yrs. There is a marker going up the Livingston side if the at train doesn’t reach a certain speed then the helper engines are called in. They’re only used to assist the train then return to Livingston . The family are three generations of railroaders.
@yankeesforlife243 ай бұрын
For going east that’s true. We have 3 markers going east that if you don’t hit a certain speed you’ll need helpers. Going west any “heavy” or loaded bulk commodity train like grain, coal, oil, etc will automatically have helpers attached, as well as underpowered trains and trains that are over tonnage restrictions

Great video ! I hope down the line BNSF will preserve and donate MRL # 290 That is one of the few remaining SDP40 units left . Built for the Great Northern railroad back in the mid 1960s. Close to 60 years old and still doing what it does best !

That would be awesome if they did that- it’s a very interesting looking unit and was cool to see run

Good Luck with that!.... BNSF doesn't "donate" much of Anything.
@yankeesforlife244 ай бұрын
@@Romans--bo7bractually bnsf is one of the largest donators of heritage equipment to museums. The 290 is dead and there are already talks of donating it to a museum that could get it up and running

@@yankeesforlife24.... Thank you for your reply. Well, if that's true.... then I stand humbly corrected. I'm from MT.... not far from Livingston, and have numerous pictures I've taken years back, of 290... both, in the yard / shop and on the main line out of Livingston and Missoula. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

I wonder what is going to happen to the SD35/40/P40's that the MRL had. Im sure BNSF will sell them off god forbid scrap them. I think there was a 45 or two still on their roster as well.
@yankeesforlife246 ай бұрын
MRL doesn’t have any sd35s Anymore. The 355 ( only remaining sd45) and the 290, the sdp40 are both stored in Livingston. the MRL sd40 2xrs are all still in service either in yard or local service and all the sd70aces minus the 4310 are pulling freight around the bnsf system. A lot of MRL power is in really bad condition including the 290/ 4310 which both died before the buy out.
@Romans--bo7br4 ай бұрын
@@yankeesforlife24..... in a reply that You sent to me today, you stated that the 290 was set to be donated to a museum that could get "her" back up & running again.... is that still true? "IF" so.... which museum?.... there aren't very many with that kind of physical capability and the resources to accomplish that sort of undertaking.
@Romans--bo7br4 ай бұрын
Back in the 1990's & early 2000's, MRL owned the largest fleet of SD 45's ("Hustle Muscle"), Anywhere in the western hemisphere.... and I have photo's (that I took) of nearly every single one of them, at the Livingston Yard & shops. I "miss" them.
@yankeesforlife243 ай бұрын
@@Romans--bo7bryeah this original reply was old info. The 355 remains in the Livingston shops as does the 290. As of right now the plan is still for it to be donated but then again, bnsf often changes their mind. They haven’t picked a museum yet so I couldn’t tell you where. The 290 prime mover had a catastrophic crank shaft failure some Time in 2023 so it wouldn’t take long to get it back and running. My guess would be that museum in Minnesota that already has the GN 325. Then again, they could try and get the 290 and 355 up and running due to a bnsf power shortage. They could also remain stored since all of the gp9s joined the 355 and 290 in Livingston earlier this month in laid up storage status.
