The Purge and Hostel also did similar concepts of "the rich using the poor as death fodder for their entertainment" but Squid Game is definitely the best executed version of that concept (that I have watched). I do agree with some that the whole glass shatter into a fatal injury was a cheap plot point to remove a MC but not a big enough negative to ruin the positives that the show brought.

I just wanna say how I absolutely love the part when gihun and sangwoo were facing together and they were deciding who will be offense and defense through coin toss. Throughout the whole series, we saw how indecisive gihun was in his decisions. He always second guess his choices and that usually put him in tight situations. But in this scene, he was so filled with anger towards what sangwoo did and for the first time, we saw him decide without second guessing and just straight up pick his choice. Also, the way he chose triangle was a very nice call back on the honeycomb game where sangwoo let gihun picked the umbrella one instead of the triangle despite having an idea that it was a bad choice.

The triangle was symbolic in more than one way, it was the offensive, weaponized symbol in general. The triangle masks were the soldier ants with firearms, the choice Sangwoo made to betray his team picking the triangle Dalgona in the 2nd game was also offensive, the dinner table after the fifth game was shaped like a triangle and they handed them knives as weapons & it all resulted in Gihun picking triangle side on the coin flip & choosing offense in the squid game when the coin landed with triangle face up.

And it's not like he's "abandoning" his daughter in a shitty situation, as some people are kind of claiming him to be doing. He knows his daughter is safe and has a stable life in the US with her mother and her stepfather. Gihun just can't let himself pursue his own happiness while knowing that there are hundreds of people about to die. And lastly, compassion for those about to enter the game and die isn't his only motivation. Revenge is his other motivation as well. He even says "I can't forgive you" on the phone. Anybody who thinks the last decision at the airport makes no sense, has not been paying attention to the show at all. It’s shown time and time again that Gi-Hun always rushes to help those in need in a time of crisis. Sure, at the start of the show he was a bit of a bum, but they literally explain how he chose to try and save his coworker at the strike for his work. He explained this point to his ex-wife and said that he can’t pass up an opportunity to help someone in need. Gi-Hun’s daughter isn’t going to be dying anytime soon, he can always go back to see her. But you can’t say the same for the people going through the Games.

They chose the people in society with the greatest debts that would have no recourse but the Squid Games to get the money they needed. Multiple people were clearly shown having their lives threatened by debt collectors or gangsters, and others had family they had to take care of but couldn't without that money. @@daemonite6661 There's actually a major loan debt issue in Korea that this story plays on. It's not uncommon for there to be loans over there with 500% interest, and many people who needed them end up in crippling debt and commit suicide. Also, South Korea doesn't deport North Korean defectors, the boy would simply remain an orphan as bringing their mother out would cost more money than Sae-byeok could safely get her hands on. The problem is that rich people chose to exploit this problem rather than offer any kind of help, or at the very least ignoring these people. They are not doing them a favor by violently traumatizing and murdering people, comparing them to race horses, and treating their lives/safety as entertainment. It's what makes Ilnam the villain; He's choosing to be a bad person despite having the power to make positive change. Basically he has survivor’s guilt. He hasn’t spent any of the money, because it’s blood money (money from all the dead contestants), so he doesn’t want to use it. Gihun also swore on his mom, so his mom dying was kinda ironic and I felt bad for them (as Saebyeok would say). He didn’t have any emotion in the first half of the episode, due to how much he’s experienced in the game(s) (all the deaths have shocked him in a way, that with his mom’s death he became numb). It’s understandable that people are upset with his decision, but it’s within his character. His daughter isn’t going anyway (at least we hope so…), but him at least attempting to stop the game (of course with Junho lol, because we know he isn’t dead👀) will help prevent the other 456 participants risk not NOT seeing their families again

Yeah, he should’ve visited his daughter, but it’s within his character (the director did it on purpose). It’s obvious he’s not a good dad, but he’s not a bad one either, he just has survivor’s guilt, which then turns to remorse at the end when he takes the card from the guy and rejoins the game. But after that he just stayed at his mother's house, not working just taking advantage of her, and what really showed how bad of a dad he is was his mother had to beg him to care about his daughter leaving him. For someone who cares, his interactions with the daughter, he seems like he don't know how to be a dad towards her and you can see she was trying to get a relationship with him but he didn't try hard enough.

My favorite hint was when the detective was checking the player files but none of them had a file for any players as "001" because 001 was always the old man joining in on the games so there was obviously no reason to keep files about him.

In particular, the title of this episode, "Lucky Day," is actually from the name of very famous Korean 1900s novel. The novel contains the lives of the underprivileged people living day by day in the Japanese colonial era. The main character of the novel is a husband, who drives a 인력거 (in modern society, it's like an Uber taxi driver, horse-drawn, but a carriage is dragged by a person instead, the driver himself). He works hard every day, but no matter how hard he works, he can't get out of poverty, so his family couldn't even eat a meal a day. But one day, his wife, who got sick after giving birth, asked him not to go to work today but to stay with her. However, if he can't work for a day, they had no money to live on. So the husband pretends not to care about his wife's words and goes to work. However, on that day, very unusual, but like a miracle, there were so many customers that he couldn't leave work. Yet instead, he was able to earn so much money that he could buy his wife a food called "설렁탕 Seolleongtang," which she wanted to eat so much after giving birth. (Seolleongtang is a clear meat soup made of beef. For the lower class who were so poor that they didn't have money to buy meat, so for them, even this food was so much expensive) The excited husband quickly took home the food his wife wanted to eat, just like the title of the novel keep saying what a lucky day, but when he got home, the only thing he could find was his dead wife and the newborn son who was sucking the empty milk of his mother. The husband sobbed and said to his wife, "Why can't you eat?" Why can't you eat..." The novel ends with a cry. Just by looking at the title you get to expect something bright and happy, but the contents of the novel were disastrous and miserable. It's a novel that describes the difficult times of that time in twist and irony.

This is my opinion on Gihun's decision to not board the airplane. I completely understand people being frustrated with Gihun's decision on a personal level, but him turning around in order to at least attempt to stop the games is very much in-character in terms of writing. And it's not like he's "abandoning" his daughter in a shitty situation, as some people are kind of claiming him to be doing. He knows his daughter is safe and has a stable life in the US with her mother and her stepfather. It has been shown throughout the show that while Gihun has made some terrible mistakes in his life and is perceptible to falling low just like any other human being, he does ultimately have a good heart. Gihun just can't let himself pursue his own happiness while knowing that there are hundreds of people about to die. Also, compassion towards those about to enter the game and die isn't his only motivation. Revenge is his other motivation as well. He even says "I can't forgive you" on the phone. So even if some people hate Gihun's final decision, it makes perfect sense why he chose to not board the plane story-wise and character-wise.

The daughter clearly knows that he doesn't do much for her but tries to make him feel better, it should be the parents making the children feel better and being emotionally mature. No Gihun is a piece of shit who abandoned everyone that loved or helped him, since the beginning of the story. In the end I thought ohh at least we will have a character arc of him improving the relationship with the daughter, since the mom is died already, nah. He is Liam Neeson now. He can keep his "good heart".

@@jasoncarvalho588 LONG INSIGHT BELOW: If you choose to read this, please keep in mind I wrote this mainly speaking to the claim that Gi-hun doesn't have a good heart 🙌 Was that not the whole point of the show? I'm not here to say your take on it is incorrect but rather to offer an alternative approach as yours has also given me some things to think about. Dude was stuck in all kinds of unfortunate circumstances. You're absolutely right that his past decisions were what got him where he was. Admittedly, yes, his actions in the beginning like stealing from his own mother to gamble is 100% a shitty one. However, the way I look at it, not once did he do those things with selfish ambitions. Now, selfish may be a tricky word to use depending on how you want to interpret it but what I mean by that is that he only ever gambled FOR his daughter and mother. For example, immediately after he wins the gambling money, he calls his daughter excited that he can afford something nice to eat for her birthday. Additionally, after the game of Ddakji in the subway, he immediately gives a part of it to his Mum. I don't recall him saying at any point that he wanted money for himself to spend it on pointless things. Throughout the entirety of the show, his motivations for even putting his life on the line was to create better opportunites in which he can improve his future relationship with his daughter. Moreover, with his mother in urgent need of professional care, on top of their existing living conditions, he made the choice to go through all of this FOR THEM. Of course, in the end, it was unfortunate timing that his absence from home was the time that his mother passed away. During that time though he was competing in the one thing that gave him the biggest chance of being able to gain money for those he cared about. Gi-hun having not spent any of the money a year after the game further proves the point that he wasn't selfish with the money that he had gained (mainly because that money was supposed to to go towards his mother's hospital bills). Even when he gains the strength to move forward, the one time we see him "spend" any of that money is when he gives it to Sang-woo's mother and Sae-byeok's little brother. You could look at this example as him putting the money towards another motherly figure seeing as his has passed on. In doing this, he also kept his promise to Sae-byeok that he would care for her brother. I agree with you that he did indeed abandon those he cared about but it wasn't when he joined the game, it was in the moments prior to. He was abandoning them more when he was there physically because of his dumb decisions to gamble, etc. Whereas, during the time he was absent, he was trying to do the complete opposite and was striving to undo the wrongs in order to benefit the others. I absolutely think that what you said is valid and true to a point but to dismiss all of this and say he doesn't have a good heart is something I think deserves a bit more reconsideration. As for his decision in not boarding the plane, although I personally would have liked for him to do so, the original comment pretty much sums it up rather well. It just sucked because it felt like all of this was a waste of time by that point but I see now why it may have been a better decision not to board

@@mahukarau3872 Gihun was selfish and was gambling to pay back his debt, that is guess what he previously gambled away previously. He was stuck in the circumstance he created himself when he was fired he could have gotten a job and the story showed he wasn't even trying to find one. I will never feel bad for a grown-ass man staying home, taking advantage of his elderly mother, and making her support him. He gambles to pay his debt after HE STOLE FROM HIS SICK AND ELDERLY MOTHER and decided to gamble it away. The money he gamble was partly the some that the mom gave him and the other he stole, none of it was his. Where in the series did he try to connect with his daughter, when he forgot about her birthday or when Gihun's mother told him that she would be taken to American and never see him again and he didn't even react, the grandmother cared more. The thing is that all this I thought the story was used for a redemption arc where he comes back and helps them, nope the mom dies and he doesn't connect with the daughter. GIHUN=ZERO CHARACTER ARC. Him not going to connect with his daughter, just so the show can have season 2, makes his character even less of the "good-hearted " person you guys are talking about. He just didn't want to kill people in the game that doesn't exci=use non of his actions outside the game. Just to finish he went to the game because he was so down financially he need to get the money or he would lose his eyes or organs. When they left the game he went back to pay his debt and to pay for the surgery, but the mom has no money because she was supporting his selfish ass, so you correcting your wrong doesn't make you right, it's neutral. Also, the other people he saved were promises not some selfless action that he just thought about, plus I took him a whole year to do it and I guess he didn't care about Ali's family. He was rich enough to track them down.
@hannahchung91753 жыл бұрын
@@jasoncarvalho588 violent union breakouts were apparently common in Korea back in the day. I don't think it's easy to get another job if you have that in your history, no employer wants a "violent" worker (also you can't just tell him to "find another job" as if he didn't try again and again). If you ask me, he was an alright dad given the culture and the circumstances, not based on western values. Also, correcting a wrong also doesn't make anything "neutral", it's just growth. He probably decided to go back to the games because his mom's health was the tipping point. If he didn't go, that would've been the selfish, although overall smart, thing to do. And I think it's realistic to get survival's guilt and become a bit useless after going through something like that. No use helping others when you yourself are a complete mess.

The title of this episode originated from a very famous Korean novel 'One Lucky Day' which is '운수좋은날' in Korean. This novel is about a family who are very pool. One day, the husband have the opportunity to earn a lot of money by driving a rickshaw than usual. So he buys a food for his sick wife who is waiting for him to come back home. After coming back home, he tries to wake his wife who passed away while he went out to earn money. Then comes the famous line "I'm home dear..I brought some food.. why can't you eat it.. It has been a one lucky day" which is pretty much similar from the Gi hun's line from 8:41. For almost all the Korean audiences, the title, the line and the story flow of this episode naturally recalls the original novel. I wrote this comment to just help the foreign audiences to understand that the title isn't 'One lucky day' because he won the game but is a metaphor of the original novel.

I don't think so... Because Korean name of 'Green light, Red light' is 'Hibiscus has bloomed'. *Hibiscus=Mugunghwa(Mogoonghwa) In fact the girl robot said in Korean 'Mugunghwa flower has bloomed' So it seems no related between his hair color.

@@daffaagung Box office numbers and acclaims aren't what makes movies good. Train to Busan was another widely popular movie that took a concept done to death and came out with an A+. It addressed a lot of social commentary and made grown men bawl in it too. "The Host" was another good movie that was creative with its genre and widely regarded as top tier as well. But I don't think the OP is insinuating that everything Korean made in terms of films and tv is gold. But they certainly understand the assignment in examples like this.

I just realized that Gi huan was last in line for everything! The last person to be recruited for the games, the last to finish game red light, green light, honeycomb, marbles, and the glass bridge. Did that all foreshadow that he'd be the last man standing? I noticed this when he was the last one to get off the subway at 21:44. Mind blown! 🤯

Even if Gi Hun has got on the plane, it would have not solved anything. It was clear he’d always be watched, stalked and under constant threat from these people. He’d never be at peace and neither would his daughter. And not only that, it would leave thousands of other people to become victims of this game and have thousands of families separated forever without ever knowing their fate. How can you stand by and live your life knowing not only will you and your loved ones never be at peace, but also knowing thousands of others will suffer the same torment and agony? So no. I do not see Gi Hun’s final decision as selfish. It’s the only one they can end this season, and all I can think watching him turn around with that look of pure rage in his eyes is “go get ‘em tiger.”

One lucky day is actually the title of a book that's very famous in Korea. The story is basically a poor man's "lucky day" where he earned more money than he ever did before but it was also the day his wife died. I would dare to say everyone in Korea has heard of this at least once. So to us "one lucky day" is synonym to very unlucky day.

I really hope there's a seaon 2, but so far it looks like Netflix hasn't ordered it yet. Given the success of season 1, it would seem obvious they'd want another one, but the creator/director has said that he does not have a clear plan for a season 2 and would probably rely on a staff of writers. I think the success was unexpected and if it takes a while to order a season 2 that might be because the creator is going to be able to ask for a lot more money. It would definitely behoove Netflix to give the guy a shovelful of money and a good budget and a staff full of writers and hammer out a really good follow up. There are enough open story lines that they could take it in a lot of directions. They even left it open for the cop to still be alive.
