One thing I should have made more explicit in the video: connecting your mesh system with ethernet will make your internet kick ass ... UP TO THE AMOUNT YOU CAN GET FROM YOUR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER. It's still a wireless mesh meaning one SSID and the main pick still controls a the traffic and routing. On the wireless devices they can roam about from AP to AP without any additional configuration. Yes you can setup 2 wifi routers one main and one secondary, with the second being in bridge mode and as long as the ssid and passwords are the same you can wire them together and get similar results. However the handoff will not be as seamless on the wifi client end. You have to manage each router independently it's just not as seamless.

I appreciated this video. This is exactly what I wanted to know - all you need do to speed up a Google wifi mesh is plug in a cable - i.e. nothing else to configure. I am trying to help a friend do exactly this and finding docs on how you need to configure it has been quite difficult. To all the naysayers who say this isn't a mesh any more, that depends on exactly what a mesh is. To me, it has always been about the unified wifi network with seamless handover. I've set up wifi in the past with different APs, with same branded APs, even with the same models and it doesn't really create a mesh. Clients would get stuck on one AP, no transitioning between different frequencies, etc. I know meshes just working is more common these days, but it hasn't always been this way. So for me, the defining characteristic of a wifi mesh is about the *clients*, not the infrastructure - it is a seamless wifi network for the clients. Adding a wired backhaul is a technical detail to make it perform better. If you can choose to go wired or wireless between the APs in a Google Wifi network, that's great - it gives flexibility to wire where you can and use wireless where you can't. As far as I'm concerned, it's still a mesh network. As to why not choose a cheaper set of APs if you're going to wire the backhaul? Well, Google wifi is more than just the hardware. My friend loves that it is possible to see who is connected from anywhere (away from home) and be able to set limits and kill connections for the kids as necessary. Google wifi also has a well-engineered radio configuration, and it doesn't look like some sci-fi contraption that is about to take off. So plenty of reasons to stick with Google wifi even if you're going to wire the backhaul.
@kellyq21

OK, it sounds like you wired your primary Google puck (the router puck connected to the cable modem) to another puck where the wifi signal couldn't quite make it over the distance from the primary to the next puck. How do the pucks communicate with one another to form the mesh? If the inter-puck communication is wireless on a differenct freqency, how will the mesh be maintained if the regular wifi signal couldn't make it that far? Or does the wire between the pucks carry Ethernet as well as the inter-puck communication? Also, can you confirm what device is on each end of the cable you ran, and which ports you used? The influencer did a terrible job of explaining this.

In my experience installing the Google mesh system, the only hiccup was when I was connecting the power plug of a Google puck to a power strip. I couldn’t get it to show up on the Google Mesh app. Once I plugged it directly into a wall socket it appeared, I connected it to the system and I was all good. Until! I moved it to it’s permanent home and plugged it into the power strip again and I lost it. That makes me believe that they operate like a power line adapter and a Wifi extender. Once I plugged it back into the wall socket I was all good again. Thank you for all the great videos 🙏🏽

Can you clearly share your router, modem in house and studio setup? Wires in / out port? Here’s how my setup is - Fibre broadband 1Gbps from ISP 1. Connected 1 ethernet cable to modem and other end to goog wifi router primary point (main router) 2. Connected another ethernet wire on Google wifi router lan port (non globe) and expanded the wire till another room 20ft away to another add on google router (lan port). Basically one ethernet cable connecting two routers directly using wired connection. This helped improve the speed to 400mbps connection. Note: make sure you setup wifi addon point as wireless first before connecting via wired. Question : Whats the diff If i connect G wifi primary router to addon router vs Both router connected to modem directly?

My understanding is the mesh system can either use a wireless backplane or an ethernet backplane. so that would mean the primary node would ethernet into the router and then the other wifi point would connect to the primary node and if there was a second point it would connect by ethernet to the 1st point.

I was looking for a solution for connecting 2.4 band vs the 5.0 band and came upon your video. The solution for week wifi is run wires to a wifi mesh node. But ... we don't want to dig. If you have a mancave and have the path to run the cat 5 or 6 .. sure .. go ahead. But you don't need to buy a mesh network which are more expensive; wire a repeater. How about putting an external wired repeater /antennae outside your house. I would think that would be more ideal.

Thanks, this confirmed that my 'upgrade' will do what I'm hoping: Maintain a robust mesh wi-fi for devices floating around the house, with the full paid for speed blasting from each wi-fi spot. I need to have at least 200Mbs to my home office in the back room of an old house, but am only able to get about 50Mbs using 4 Google wi-fi devices strategically placed. My electrician is bringing CAT6 cable as we speak to the back rooms which I will be able to plug the wi-fi spots into by the end of the day. If it works as yours has, I'll have the house blanketed in blazing fast internet, and can plug my home workstation into the wi-fi LAN port to have nearly lossless speed from the modem. Fingers crossed...

No everything should be Downstream of your First Router so the way you would configure is either Ethernet to the second Puck/Router plugged into the Ethernet Out of the First Google WiFi. I go Google WiFi (now Nest WiFi Router) to Switch to 2nd Google Nest WiFi Router(or Google WiFi). I went this way because my Shed acts as a Faraday Cage when the door is closed (no Windows and all made of Metal) so no WiFi inside it. What you do is just configure all the Mesh stuff in the near vicinity and then move the Puck after it is setup. As long as they are still on same Ethernet LAN you will be good.

As one viewer commented below...this defeats the entire reason for investing in a mesh system. That said...after going through all of that work digging trenches to route a long ethernet cable out to your mancave...why not just finish the job with a few more feet of ethernet cable, and possibly an ethernet hub with multiple ports for more devices, and hardwire everything so Wifi isn't even needed.

I have my first mesh AP half way up the stairs (within the line of sight) and I have my second mesh AP on the second floor up the L-shaped stairway (but, within line of sight of AP #1). When I set it up this way - I have zero dead spots in the house and I am getting about 85% of the fully-advertised speed I'm paying my ISP for. Bonus points... I hung a Raspberry Pi Zero [running PiHole] off of my main router and pointed all endpoints to resolve DNS there and I have increased throughput by about 5% by black-holing known ad sites, malware sites, and anything that has been black listed.

Did you really just bury an exposed Ethernet cable? It doesn’t even look heavy duty. When something inevitably happens to it, next time maybe run a couple of heavy duty wires through some protective cable tubing when you bury it.

You could have saved yourself a crap ton of time and effort by just picking up a powerline kit. plug one unit into your router and one into any ac outlet in your out building and then ethernet from powerline unit either to your device for a wired connection or a mesh station in the outbuilding for wireless.

I want to mention one thing, if you are hard wiring your ethernet cable then why you are using Google wifi ? you can hardwire directly to your devices !! Which could be faster than wifi connection.

If you are on a piece of significant realestate, you could wire several in a ring around the Outside and Saturate the Middle. If you were in an Outbuilding made of metal getting no to minimum WiFi you could get WiFi bubbling out from both ends. So many reasons for wanting to do this. Most large Corporate Buildings use a Mesh WiFi Tech of some sort that all the WAPs are Ethernet Backhauled like this.

Hi, you have been very informative thanks heaps. Something new users should know "the setting up the app...only works properly on ANDROID not Iphone" (I learnt this the hard way!). You have actually given me a brilliant idea with getting an extension of that cable so that the house has better coverage (our set up is the other way around from yours) we moved the phone line nbn to the shed (office) and have the google wifi 3 pack going inside the house. I like the idea of placing the 1st wifi that is connected to the modem via a long cable to the back deck so we can get better reception as its a double floor house.

FYI ... I've been trying to solve my weak signal on my other property (garage).. the 3 pack AC1200 comes in okay at the furthest point.. but sometimes defined as "poor" when testing the mesh network.. The NEW solution is to get the AC2200 which have a way better range. And it worked. Wiring ethernet nodes isn't wireless anymore. Might as well have an electrician "tunnel" cables to the office/shed then. Try the AC2200 it may work. The problem with AC2200 is that the nodes do not have the rj45 connectors so wiring is not available and in theory of the "mesh" the rj45 is not needed. Only drawback of the Nest is that you cannot select which of the 2 bands you want to use; the 5 ghz band takes priority for content unless the the 5ghz band is weak then the 2.4 ghz band comes into play and the 2.4 band is use for setting up home devices.

There's no point in buying an expensive mesh system if you have to use cables to connect the AP's. So I think I have to throw away my Google Wifi :( Is there another mesh system that can actually deliver in a wireless config? I have no way to run cables from the router to the room in my house where I need better reception. I also have the same disappointing experience with Netgear Orbi. And also Unifi non mesh wired AP's perform terrible compared to how the free router from the local ISP performs when in range (of course there's no way to use that in a mesh, but still, it's sad to see how your professional grade UniFi system delivers 100Mbps while the noname router/AP you get for free gives you 500Mbps)

You should just invest in a power line adapter if you’re running cat 6 thru out your house. A power line will turn your entire electrical grid into a Ethernet hub, so long as they are on the same circuit.

You experience a decrease in Wifi Speed the further you are from the Primary puck. ex. Basement(Primary) 240 MBS, 1st Floor 100MBS, 3rd Floor 40 MBS. Becuse the third floor meshes data to second floor and second floor meshes to basement there is a decrease in speed. The Ethernet connection can just chain the data with no signal loss.
4 жыл бұрын
@@fsxspen Exactly, the negotiation between the wifi points can be handled over cable instead, increasing the negotiation speed to gigabit (assuming at least CAT 5e cables are used).

don't think you're getting what person is implying. You CAN do without 2 google devices connected via ethernet (wired up to each other) and just using "mesh" or wireless connection (every feet of distance drops the "throughput" of this mesh wifi even though it may show 5 strong wifi bars - the wifi signal hops make it slower). When you *can connect just the 2 google devices via cable (rest all the world is still wifi - nothing changes there) -- it is beyond amazing fast (as if you're plugged in to your ISP modem/router direct!). That is how these systems should have been touted/designed in 1st place with wifi mesh capability as add on -- at least to explain to customers
@mohamadhourani2579
@mohamadhourani2579 4 жыл бұрын
@@AjAj-ef4yv You have this confused with a wifi repeater. This is not a repeater. It uses beam technology so the drop off is minimal at worst. Connecting your mesh sattelites via ethernet - while possible, is absolutely not what these were designed for. I totally get what he is doing in the video. I get why he's doing it. But you can do this with three wireless routers, bridge them, and boom. Mesh systems were made so that they could beam the signal between each other and create a field, or "mesh" of wifi between each satellite. Connecting them via wire defeats that purpose.
