I had a Lee Haney bodybuilding VHS in the 80s and it got me into lifting. At 60, I would still like to thank him for the encourage and knowledge I carried forward. Still lift 5x a week, despite the draconian/idiotic gym lockdowns.

The most amazing fact is that Lee was the 1st 8 time Mr. Olympia and the youngest to retire at the age of 31. At this age most of the bodybuilders hit their prime & he retired at such young age with 8 Olympia wins .

Lee Haney retired after winning 8 straight. What he did was very impressive. But I remember that time period and followed bodybuilding a lot a back then. I believe Lee Haney saw Mr. "Blood and Guts" Dorian Yates coming. Dorian was ahead Haney after the first rounds. I think Lee got Dorian in the Finals.

I just believe Lee saw the writing on the wall, although Lee said that he retired because the $100,000 prize was not enough. In my opinion, Lee wanted to go out on top, and I believe that he thought this guy Dorian is not going anywhere. I could be wrong. But my thoughts have not changed since Haney’s final Olympia. I was young and was big fan of bodybuilding and a big fan of Haney. I wanted him to continue, but I just really believe that he did not know how long he would be able to hold off Yates. I miss that era. I really the followed the sport then, read Muscle & Fitness - cover to cover, watched Haney’s cable show, etc., etc.

The drugs were getting more advanced and more bodybuilders were upping the dosage and experimenting culminating with Dorian ushering the Bronze age which was the 90s when the technology and science advanced so much with training equipment, training techniques and supplements were at their peak.

Man, I remember being a little fella in the 80’s and going to the KMART and seeing magazines with Lee Haney. I’m talking I was in grades 3-5 and thinking how awesome he looked. Still today he has an amazing body. I honestly think if he competed in a different era he would still be one of the best. He could have built bigger legs, and just with that been superb by today’s standards!!! And let’s not forget what a great man his is!!!

I remember when he reigned in the 80s. He wasn't my favourite bodybuilder then (it's a very subjective sport), but I admired his positive attitude and work ethic, and that he did charitable work for kids. A good role model. I believe judges kept giving him the title as much for his attitude as his physique. They take everything into account. I remember his great lat spread and he was always smiling.

IMHO Bob Paris was the best aesthetically. Rory Leidelmeyer was incredible in those days and is still in good shape in his 60s. I was always inspired by Al Beckles (who stayed in good shape to the end), Jeff King, Matt Mendenhall, and many others who never got to the top in Olympia, but were still very good. After the mass monsters came along, due to the introduction of new drugs, I was astounded that people could get that big, but sadly aesthetics took a second place to sheer mass.
