Located on the shores of freshwater Lake Michigan, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed and grew rapidly in the mid-19th century. After the Chicago Fire of 1871, which left more than 100,000 homeless, the city made a concerted effort to rebuild. The construction boom accelerated population growth throughout the following decades, and by 1900 Chicago was the fifth-largest city in the world. Chicago made noted contributions to urban planning and zoning standards, including new construction styles (including the Chicago School of architecture), the development of the City Beautiful Movement, and the steel-framed skyscraper.
Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It is the site of the creation of the first standardized futures contracts at the Chicago Board of Trade, which today is the largest and most diverse derivatives market globally, generating 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures. O'Hare International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, and the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and the greatest amount of railroad freight. In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and it ranked seventh in the entire world in the 2017 Global Cities Index. The Chicago area has one of the highest gross domestic products (GDP) in the world, generating $680 billion in 2017. In addition, the city has one of the world's most diversified and balanced economies, not being dependent on anyone industry, with no single industry employing more than 14% of the workforce.
The city ranked first place in the 2018 Time Out City Life Index, a global quality of life survey of 15,000 people in 32 cities. The city is also home to several fortune 500 companies, the most notable being, Allstate, Boeing, Exelon, McDonald's, Quaker Oats, and United Airlines Holdings. Landmarks in the city include Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum Campus, the Willis (Sears) Tower, Grant Park (Chicago), the Museum of Science and Industry, and Lincoln Park Zoo. Chicago's culture includes the visual arts, literature, film, theater, comedy (especially improvisational comedy), food, and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, hip-hop, gospel, and electronic dance music including house music. Of the area's many colleges and universities, the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago are classified as "highest research" doctoral universities. Chicago has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues, including two Major League Baseball teams.

Thanks! It was really nice to drive through there. Really nice brick buildings. The one going for 45M has cool rooftop with pool. There's some pics of it on the internet. Next time I'll walk through these neighborhoods and do some panning around to get better shots of each block. Think people would love that.

@@robbyquintana9822 Funny you say that because I was think about that. The foliage on trees are starting come out too. They are bright green almost like a lime green. I probably do that in the coming weeks when foliage appear on some of the bigger trees. Think that'll look really cool.

Do not move to deadly Chicago. A word to the wise is sufficient. If there? Get out before you or family members are killed, and yes family can and will kill you for many reasons. Get rid of life insurance and donate your body.

I live 6 months in Europe and 6 months in U.S.A Chicago, but I don't want to rent anymore, I want to buy an apartment in a good neighborhood, so I know when I come back, I won't found my stuff missing, or someone break in. any sudjestions ?

Imo. I'd say the Arlo 4. It needs high speed internet to be able to view from it's app and function. The camera is wireless, has night vision, siren, led spotlight, and 2-way audio. You can add a local storage that connects to your modem via USB to bypass a pricey subscription to store your videos. You won't have full access to the Arlo app tools though, but your able to have the basic camera function u need to keep your house secure and have a visual of it at all times. The battery last 3-6months without charging. It can also be connected to a battery charger while away to keep the battery fully charged while it still functions as a security camera. Remember, this is only my opinion, and best to read more about other ways keepn your place secure.

Do you want to live in the city or in the suburbs? I think the suburbs surrounding Chicago are safer. You can look up each area you might be interested in & look at the crime rate. For example just search Lincoln Park crime rate & compare it to crime rate in other towns. Eventhough Lincoln Park is considered part of the city. Also, it would be good to look at the school ratings in the town you are interested in. It goes up to number 10. The higher the school rating, usually the better the neighborhood is.

Why didn't you go down Sheridan through Beverly on the Southside? That is still Chicago proper. There are some gigantic mansions, (2) FrankLloyd Wright homes. Countless treasures. Most are still single family homes, unlike many of these in downtown that are divided into luxury condos. Lake Forest is home to Schweppes & Armor, estates. Guilded Age Mega mansions. The Armour Estate is now Lake Forest Academy. Schweppes mansion is for sale.

Both types can live here. Rents are low enough for middle class (if you're lucky to find a good deal) but property owners are wealthy

Yeah, I seen it. I seen some that are even abandoned with no windows and all boarded up with 6' weeds growing around these buildings. Some of these building are made of beautiful stone too.

@@chicago4k542 i got a plan, go to the powers that be with an idea of property tax abatements and then turn those areas into heavily gated communities. buy the homes for about 20-35 k , pour about 500k to 800k for each house into thorough renovations and modernization and resell for about one million minimum plus hoa fees.

True for New York but not Chicago. Humboldt Park has bright color like Puerto Rico. My old block has bright oranges, lime greens, white, even purple. This is not New York or Boston where eventhing is brown. We can paint whatever color we want!

Chicago's "richest" neighborhoods are the diverse neighborhoods of many different cultural traditions. Lincoln Park is a wealthy neighborhood of older, mostly white, wealthy people. Not very "rich"at all. It's boring and it sucks. Like living in the parking lot of Oakbrook Mall and five Starbucks within walking distance.

It isn't "boring", it's what wealthy neighborhoods in cities globally look like. Diversity typically equals crime ridden neighborhoods that are ugly. Oakbrook mall doesn't have the history and is a giant complex in the far suburbs, ditto starbucks, stop making disingenuous, dumb comparisons.
