Good catch, I totally missed that. I think that's one of the trolls that's too smart for most people to fall for it, sorta like the intellectual equivalent of Carl's reaction time failing/saving him. I think it would be more successful if it dropped the player through the same hole both times so the second time it's obvious the vine has moved. But since the set-up for the vine must be fairly complex, it might not be possible. Shame, it's a brilliant trick.

The amount of reusing entities and subconsciously making the player think something is not a danger while it still is very much part of a future troll is extremely well done. Just two examples are the conveyor spike troll and the skull raft before the first checkpoint. The former uses a spike that looks like it would potentially be an anti-softlocking mechanism if the player were to jump and get the fire flower, so once the players finds that they can’t go get the flower, they dismiss the spike. Likewise, the raft troll uses the same spike previously used as a powerup check, making it not seem particularly out of place.

I don't know if it's just a standard thing people do in MM, or if Carl just missed it, but in 12:05 he jumps up to the switch area, and the switch is on and stays on, so things work, but in 12:23 he jumps up there while the switch is off, and the switch turns on, so again, things work. This means the creator basically designed an "if" statement in the level for that part, which is really cool.

It's a state check. Its essential in this level since the changing of state will progress the level when you backtrack so that was designed to force one particular state to make the level go on. To my knowledge very few levels are designed to be played twice through the same section with different switch states its pretty advanced level design on top of the difficulty of good troll traps.

@Danjimaru it feels very sophisticated, and it was just hidden in the level in plain sight. In some sense, it saves work for the level designer, because you don't need 2 troll setups for 2 switch states, you just need one.

Red launcher that shoots shellmets, an on/off block, an on/off switch. This set up will always make sure an on/off is in a certain state when it's loaded, and then it's resets itself as well so it can work as many times as the on/off is in the wrong state.
