I find the patches you've demonstrated really inspiring, and they make me want to dive into this instrument once more.

There seems to be a bit of a FLOSS music plugin renaissance at the moment. Still, though, I'm waiting, so to speak, for, or at least hoping to find, a nice FLOSS synth plugin that can take a reasonably-long, quantum-computer-choking wav or flac or whatever accessible file, actually resynthesize it to a healthy amount of partials and then have a powerful system with which to work on/effect the results. Madrona Labs' ~four-year (and counting) foot-drag-with-the-name-Sumu (lost in the fog?) aside, it would ideally have to be FLOSS.

its nice to see a popular creator actually cover a FOSS software of any kind, especially a plugin. hobbyist and music production community in general is SO brainwashed by for-profit companies into thinking non-free plugins are worse, or not worth using makes me so angry.
@friesiamans19663 жыл бұрын
hey, i just read your comment, don´t be angry, it´s not worth it, just keep going your way... how do i know? i´m a hobby/amateur musician since 1971 and went a long way - i play several instruments, played many completely styles of music (reggae for decades) and even made music for several utterly crazy films and am now more into electronic music - in the early 80s i had the chance to go into music business, but deliberately refused that, because i was aware, that i´m too soft for that - i had moments, when i regretted it, but at the end of the day, i´m very happy, sitting here in my garage, having a fine little home recording studio (i started and struggled with cassettes back in the day, so i know what a luxury we have now), a self sufficient nobody with a small herd of fans, haha... :-) as i said: keep going and do your stuff, being angry just costs energy for nothing - love and greetings from germany 🙋♂️

@@stu4116 what i can tell you as a developer is that... when people ask for synths that are not cpu hungry, they are really asking... "how can i get awesome synthesized sounds but not pay any cost in terms of, cpu processing?". Of course, what they would be better off with is samples. Basically... the better the synth, the more itll cost in cpu. There is no way to get it for free. You can buy a better cpu, bounce / freeze, or just use a simpler synth. But then obviously, it wont have all the trimmings. Another example of this question is... "how can i run my game at highest gfx settings but not have to buy a new cpu / gfx card?"... simple answer... you can't unfortunately. Lol.

Do you have to use the mod matrix for everything? For instance, there's a filter envelope that looks straight forward, but I don't see any click through or drag drop option. I assumed that the initial state of the synth would allow the use of the envelope on the default filter without using the matrix, but it doesnt appear that way to my amateur eyes. It seems like you can use any modulation source for any parameter....so why label the mod envelope and filter envelope separately? Could all just be mod envelopes. It's actually really awesome the flexibility available. This is the synth where I can finally design my sounds from scratch, and they sound like I imagined in my head.

Jus install it on disk c: After that cut the "Odin2.vst3" out of C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 and paste it to you preferred directory. Same with the path "C:\ProgramData\odin2\Soundbanks\User Patches" which is empty at the beginning because the factory patches are included to the vst itself. Of cause you also have to tell your DAW where to find it because after moving it to an different than the standard path for vst3 plugins it wont find it without you telling it where to scan for plugins.
@thewavewarden33153 жыл бұрын
Other than VST2, the VST3 specification absolutely requires VST3 plugins to be in the exact location it is installed to. Some hosts (for example Studio One), will not find the plugin no matter what you tell the host where to search for plugins. This is why I hardcoded the destination to where it is.

I'm drowning in plugins, free and paid. Recently I've tried most of them for one seemingly simple task: to get that 303 sound. It didn't have to be a perfect recreation, just that resonant rawness (on a synth that wasn't specifically build to emulate one). I failed with all of them, although some came close, with some tinkering. Usually they were either very thin sounding or they'd go berserk with whistling resonance. Even those with a dedicated "acid" mode failed (looking at you synthmaster). I used to think filters were mostly the same for synths, but I've found out that's not true. Same goes for distortion. I've only found one that got that 303+distortion sound right (for the most part): DTQ plusdistortion, which is free too. Anyway, as you said how great Odin's filters were, I put it to the test. I've only been playing around with it for a few minutes and it can actually do it! Even with saturation turned down there's that magical "glass cricket" sound using the diode filter with high resonance. Even rawer than the original if you ask me. Didn't have to jump through a single hoop either. Awesome synth, thanks fot the tip!

There is another one called vk-1 free synth I am not convinced that much using such free beer when having vital and surge. Genesis by Umet Ozcan is interesting for maybe sound design not for performance. Quite opposite of that would be using only commercial synths like serum, pigments, falcon, spire, phase plant, omnisphere and avenger. What is so special about Thor was I guess the formant filter but the main sound in reason came from subosc, layers and effects not Thor by itself. Like the fractalizer on zebra by uhe and absynth by ni makes the sound character very unique but without any further processing it will be almost dry. ZynAddSubFX by Paul Nasca can do extremely wide pads and it is free. The filters are basic but the capability to stack layers in additive fashion could give good results, specially when looking for deep and wide sounds. There had been some fixes to it from the UI in some paid version, but I suggest sticking to synths which are in current development.
