Just imagine, Knopfler's father detested the fact that his son Mark wanted to play guitar seriously. He wanted him to be an accountant; true story. And apparently, when Mark was starting up his band, they were looking for a singer because he thought he couldn't sing. He gave it a try and what a success !!!

I'm not trying ro be negative, but it hit me that something is missing from this interpretation. Then I realised that what's missing is "swing". This is a fine interpretation, but it just made me appreciate the original version more. Despite the title, I never noticed before how much swing it has.

Mark Knopler is a little bit unappreciated, to the casual listener anyway, what a master, I am completely jealous of this guy playing this on an acoustic and it sounding so close to the electric guitar version, not at all easy. I will say though, SoS guitar solo lends itself to it better than most rock songs, Knopler liked a clean natural sound void of many effects.
