Was in Bryce Canyon a week ago, after watching your review of (and buying) the GF 20-35 two weeks ago. So nice to see how you capture the same landscape and learning from you. I hope you took the highway into Zion when you drove to Vegas (passing Keyhole Canyon and Checkerboard Mesa). It's a mesmerizing drive.

I'm a classical orchestra musician, so when you talk about lines and focus points, foreground and background, it is just how classical music are build. Like Bach, Tjajkovskij or Mozart. Schostakowitsch or Messian. It's all about the importance of how to bring the different voices together to a complete whole. Like leading lines towards the subject. It's beautiful and when the same principles works with music and visual art, you know it's correct. At least as a base idea.

Excellent video Andy. What a beautiful part of the world. This may have already been asked, but I noticed on this trip you are using your XT5 and not your GFX system. I assume this was due to size and weight? After using your XT5 for this trip do you see yourself using the XT5 more than the GFX moving forward? Thanks again for creating such fantastic work.

Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I like both system and what I take tends to be determined by a couple of things. Weight, whether I’ll need a lot of reach, and what lenses I plan to take. I took the XT5 because I wanted to take the 8mm and the 70-300, which there aren’t equivalents of for the GFX

I was in Bryce around this time around 15 years ago, I saw 4 other people ... obviously not many people visit when it's cold. Over a period of 5 or 6 year I spend some (lots of) time in Utah, it is just magnificent. No matter how much time you use you'll never be able to see everything.

The coordination it must take (not to mention the effort) of setting up these shots must involve alot of expertise, practice and instincts. The compositions at White Pocket were completely surreal and the drone shots are practically hypnotic. Really brilliant.

I've been to Bryce Canyon. I hiked the Navajo Trail exactly where you were. Of all the National Parks, Bryce is my favourite. Zion is 2nd.

Whoa, amazing shots, Andy! Those from White Pocket were re especially impressive! Seems like the Sigma 10 - 18 would've nicely fit in your bag... Since the Sigma and 8 mm are quite small, I think they're gonna replace my 10 - 24 sooner or later. Glad your trip came out so worthwhile for you. Maybe someday... 😊

Great video - I really enjoyed the more abstract shots coming from the Air 2S. Interesting that you mentioned 4x5 large format at the end. I'm actually thinking about picking up an Intrepid 4x5 camera. I currently own a Voightlander Bessa II 6x9 and that's been a real blast to shoot with - I may actually bring that one to Iceland next year as the shots I get from it have a great vintage feel to them. 4x5 feels like the next logical step in my film journey. Watching this video makes me feel like I really need to get back to the southwest - there is just so much to see. Thanks again.

Having been to that area many times you come to realise its better to concentrate on a couple of areas. Ok for a first trip as a taster, but less is sometimes more.

We did spend time concentrating on a specific area around Hanksville, where we stayed for a week and explored the Badlands. My first two SW videos were about it. Then we spent a couple of days just dipping into a few places to decide which we’d like to visit properly next time, which is what you see here

None of the images are blown out. Blown out is off the end of the histogram where no data is recorded and all of these images has data in the highlights. They’re just bright, which is deliberate because leaning into the light and pushing the highlights, letting them flood the image, creates more interest in skies that are flat and empty. It’s a creative choice, and I’ve long been interested by the fact that there’s a feeling in photography that images have to be exposed down the middle of the histogram, when actually using the ends of it in the shadows or highlights can create powerful effects.
