Over the years, the Kommuna has participated in numerous high-profile salvage missions, including the retrieval of submarines, ships, and other valuable assets. Its longevity and adaptability have earned it a place of distinction in maritime history and the annals of Russian naval heritage.
Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels- from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!

The fact that she spent most of her life in the Black Sea is probably the most contributing factor to her longevity. Apart from low salinity level, the water is also Anoxic: there's very little oxygen in it.

When I lived in the Netherlands, I occasionally saw smaller boats on sale (not sure the types, mostly barges I guess) built in early 1900s. And they constantly traverse Waddenzee & Nordzee which aren't that peculiar in terms of chemistry, I suppose.

@iGamezRo 15 күн бұрын
As a Romanian who lives near the coast, I can confirm that the Black Sea isn't that salty. The reason for it is because it communicates with the world's oceans through the Mediterranean Sea through which it is connected through a single strait. The Mediterranean Sea also communicates with the world's oceans through a single strait, and since 1869, through a canal. A lot of rivers also flow into it, including the Danube.

@@chezsnailez but Great Lakes are freshwater, aren't they? My example was to show that boats seem to be able to last long in a more conventional sea ecosystem than low-salinity Black Sea.

But salinity is a huge factor in how long a ship can last fresh water ships like Lakers can last 80 90 years because they don't have to put up with salinity. Also winter layup probably something to do with it.

Was even there when Japan signed the treaty in the one harbor. 80 odd years later and she still sails with her war ribbons, but now at nearly twice the length as a Great Lakes ore ship. She was fast for a 850ft tub filled of iron ore. And man her bow thrusters could sing.

It is still registered as an active vessle in the United States Navy, and as such as regular crew rotations, as any other ship would. Not only is the USS Constitution the oldest vessle in the US Military, but the world, to still be afloat and serving her military. She fires her guns twice a day, every day. She sails every 4th of July, when she isn't, she is protecting her port as part of the naval garrison force

The other issues ships face which I find both cool and funny (and it’s also an issue in the rocket building side of things) is we eventually loose the knowledge or the tools used to fix ships of that age, and also how to operate them, I believe back when the Iowa class ships were reactivated they had to entirely relearn how that type of ship operated because despite having several in inventory they hadn’t be served on in decades, it’s a really cool but also sad problem, we should really document things more, the similar issue in rockery is for example people say we don’t we rebuild or take components from the Saturn V rocket? It’s because we have no clue how it works and how to make those parts, many rocket engines now have 3D printed parts, back then every single task was done by skilled workers, I find the issue really interesting

@ClemHFandangoo yeah I only really dubble checked this morning the confusion was USS constitution is the oldest naval vessel still sea worthy, where HMS is the oldest shit and commissioned ship but just not verry sea worthy so my mistake there should have looked at construction dates not sea worthiness

HMS Victory makes the Constitution look like a baby at 246 years old. Though Kommuna is a really interesting story

Built for the Czar prior to the revolution. No expense was spared and it was really built to last. All Soviet ships were not built to anything near this standard.

And Kommuna is now gone too, not for good maybe, but we'll see if the russians care to fix it anymore after being critically damaged.

Darcy clothing pink and black striped neckband shirt with a club collar, if my identification is correct. Lovely choice of style, as I’ve worn the exact same myself, it looks wonderful with your outfits.

It seems that the service life is dependent upon the usefulness of the ship.

Oldest ACTIVE vessel. The constitution is the oldest floating still in commission (not that it has seen service in 100s of years, so it isnt an active ship), the HMS Victory is the oldest commissioned warship, even if it is in drydock. But like the constitution, it also isnt active duty.
