my grandfather always LO.VED pinball - a serious addiction. a family tournament would break out at every tavern, any arcade, a family trip... fathers and sons and uncles, cousins hopping in... all because his admiration for these games. I've asked him before why he liked them so much and he has responded "well, i just love the dings and whistles, while the points are just piling up!" with a big smile. i can see why now he loved pinball so much. these old machines are magical. they make you feel so engaged and excited when playing. take in mind - he grew up in the LA scene in the late 40s/50s. he rode some of the first skateboards to come out (just a 2x4 with these tiny, very scary metal rollerskate wheels. extremely deadly. i had a pair of my grandmothers' rollerskates from when she was a teenager until recently, and it amazed me how unsafe they looked! anyway..). im sure he would of been right in the middle of the pop culture flow. unreal. what a time. i still love pinball.

Thank you for the post, brings back fond memories. When I was an early teen (early 70's) I found a pile of pinball machines by the road that were used for gambling and the owner had gotten caught and shut down so he was scrapping them. Anyhow, I asked if I could have them and he gave them to me so I brought them all home using my Radio Flyer little red wagon and learned how to repair them. As a 16 and 17 year old, I was repairing gambling pinball machines in illegal honkey tonks throughout the south part of Mississippi and made good money, far better than hauling hay and working on a farm. Oddly the experience opened the door for me into a lifelong and wonderful career in telecommunications where I am now an engineer designing test systems, writing software and diagnosing equipment failures for the company where I work today. Aside from working with mechanical relays, rotating counting mechanisms and such, the principles are still very much a part of modern electronics and programming. It still just kind of blows my mind how those designers in those days created the logic and "programming" to make those pinball machines work.

It's a very simple and old school machine but there is something about it that's just attractive. The lighting and noises give a feel of an era I never experienced, I can imagine hanging out with friends, getting a milkshake and playing one of these machines in the era of my parents. By the time I played my first machines they were a lot more complicated, digital and noisier but I enjoy the simplicity and low key nature of a machine like this.

Ummmmm …. For the record, not a glitch, but a hack. In a video game it’s called an illegal patch or code. In the era of electro mechanical games, it’s an electrical hack. Very clever. Only a game tech who really understood how to read the schematics could plan this to be so well hidden.

That is a really unique game. These designers really loved this machine. Small things like all the balls in the backboard are at different angles. Nobody would do that today. They would all be straight. I have noticed the short flipper games are more difficult than the newer machines. Insane that the ball mechanism still works after 60 years.

When I was a kid I would go look for pinball machines to play in different stores , game rooms and convenience stores . I was really good at playing them and would usually give my free games won to someone who was there watching me play . Through the years they just were harder and harder to find - being replaced by the new video games . I miss them immensely ...

Great old game, simple to understand yet fun to watch with the pool ball animation. Reminds me of the old baseball games where the players would actually run the bases in the backbox. Speaking of those it seems a brand new baseball machine is out, I've seen it at a few amusement parks, of course its redemption ticket oriented, but what makes it super cool is the player control is a section of aluminum bat, you can angle it, you can decide how far to pull it back, and it seems to be directly mechanically linked to the bat in the game, makes you feel like you have control. To the commenter about game speed, try going to an arcade that has a good selection of pinballs of different vintages. Play a 70's EM then a 2020 Stern (or vice versa) it will mess with your judgement. Ron great job discovering the score hack, and how you went about tracing down the score hack. , though since it resulted in some non scoring targets, not the best implemented. Reminds me of the 4 Million BC you had in , yes they hacked the bumpers to score 1,000 instead of 100 when lit, but it worked without causing other targets to suffer and they changed the bumper caps to match. (Also thanks for in some of your videos mentioning the left flipper trick - I ran across a Nip It friday that looked to be turned off, I didn't see an out of order sign on it (or a "It's Broke" sign on it) , so I pressed the left flipper and the thing sprang to life.)

Great video. Great content. Great commentary. Thank you for posting this up. I remember working on pinball machines in the late 70's when working for Malibu Grand Prix in Cincinnati. Very fascinating work. Most of our work involved removing the glass and cleaning the playing surfaces, replacing the bumpers and making sure all the switches and relays were working properly. (Of course, my favorite was working on the cars - but that's another story for another day). I didn't go through all the comments (wish we could do a search) but I observed on the lower left hand side of the backboard, there are five lights - numbered 1 - 5 - corresponding to the ball-in-play. Before you started the game, the number 1 was lit up as well as the Game Over sign. When you completed the game, the 5 light came on along with the Game Over sign. Is there a relay or switch that the ball passes over to change which light comes on and to reset? Or maybe it is just the lightbulbs weren't examined and replaced. It would seem to me the ball passes over a switch to light the first bulb and subsequent lights in sequence. Just an observation. Probably too late to check that out or did you cover it and I missed something?

I was around back when this game was king. The back glass story is at a TEEN CENTER! It was an attempt by do-gooders to get the kids off the street and into a gathering place with no beer but cokes and pinball machines. They had a record changer that you could load up, one of those old 45 decks that plugged into a radio (pre stereo) and you could spin the tunes and do the twist or any other dance, most likely the 2-step as most teens knew that one if you wanted to feel the lady you were dancing with up close and personal. I know I learned the 2 step when I was young, and took my buck a week allowance and blew it in the pinball machines. 3 plays for a quarter. Ah for the good old days.

I think it would be neat to alternate between two players and play it like a game of pool. Who ever got all of their balls and the 8-ball first wins. If one player accidently got the 8-ball when they hadn't got all of theirs would lose. Awesome game!!! Great video!!!

Very informative video man! I picked up a Rack a Ball, which is very similar, although I like how mine has actual balls in the back box. It plays well, but hums a lot. The score reels however sometimes get stuck when you reset the game, often on the same numbers like 900 or 1

I started working on pinball machines and video games back in 1977. That was before the emergence of the space invaders and asteroids. Most pinball machines were electromechanical, the first digital pinballs just came out, at least commercially (Night Rider and E Knievel). I worked for years on my own and had to figure things out for myself. The collectors today seem to be spoiled brats and not the working class that I was a part of. They have all of the advantages, and I have nothing in common with them. In fact, they make me sick. Joe, you are a throwback mechanic like me, I enjoy your videos. 👌👌

Waiting for the owner to complain about the change in the flippers and the lower scoring. (Hey, why's it only scoring 5 now when it used to be 10? You broke it!) :-)

Left flipper buzzes when held. Does a pinball that old have end of stroke switches on the flippers? If so, I think the EOS switch isn't working and the coil is going to fry.

@@LyonsArcade ohh. Got it. Cool stuff. it's very hard to get a good score on those old pinballs. I remember them as a kid as I'm 59. You are always losing your quarter as a ball rolled between the flippers or around the far left and right sides. Enjoying all the videos. Lots of troubleshooting time and hopefully satisfaction when you solve the problems.

JOE CLASSIC, What is determining the timing? its only the score motor cams IMPULSE switches that are determining the timing of the pinball game. I'm not sure why that 5 point wire being connect to the 10 point relay would use timing issues because the score motor cams Impulse switch still haven't changed i would think logically that the timing would be the same. I'm just confused how the other relays switches can change and alter the pinball games "timing".
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 жыл бұрын
Timing isn't necessarily how long something takes, it's the order it's done in. So certain switches close before other ones, this switch might have to close and open before another one closes, or it won't work properly. Thank you for watching Wayne!
