I have only read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir with one of my students which was amazing, so I was shocked to hear these quotes from Artemis...wow. It's so strange, if you read PHM it's as if it was someone else writing it. Now that I know this I wonder if he had ever made an apology or if he took that into consideration when writing his newer books. Hope you feel better btw

I dunno, I found Martian to be pretty great (probably mostly because there's minimal human interaction, just the protagonist on Mars being a MacGuyver), and Hail Mary, though I can't say why without spoiling some major plot points. Artemis, though? I think I'd made myself forget most of the problems with that book. Emmie brought it all back. What an unmitigated dumpster fire of a book.
@Cubehead272 жыл бұрын
@@emmiereads I'm actually in history at King's so most of my courses are there, but I'm taking a couple at Huron next semester, one of which is on late 19th/early 20th century spiritualism and occultism which I'm pretty excited for. That + my last ever course with my all-time favourite prof, which is on Canada and the Second World War, and also the last round of Kings' weird European philosophy/history/literature program that I've been in since first year (which this year is all 20th century stuff - the prof's a specialist on Beckett so hopefully we'll be finally doing some of that because I haven't read him before 🤞). Those are more or less the highlights - excited to have a nice break for now though 😊

I had read both The Martian and Project Hail Mary like a year ago and enjoyed them for the science behind them, gave it around like 4 stars or so, don’t remember but I had Artemis with the bundle that was given to me and when I read the synopsis for it, I don’t know what it was but it didn’t gravitate me to read it (my inner self knew, she was trying to save me) A few months later I try to give it a shot but had an inkling to check the goodreads reviews AND BOY. did i just save myself from reading a god-tier annoying book. I read similar reviews as the one you read and when I saw an update on your goodreads, giving this book a one star, i cackled bc i just knew you’d hate it. happy i didn’t have to go through reading that book, sorry you did though but ur a champ for not having DNF’d it.

If you'd still like to catch an adaptation of The Nutcracker this holiday season, I'd definitely suggest checking out a few of the adaptations that are available for free here on KZbin. There's a filmed from the stage version of George Balanchine's adaptation, performed a few years back by New York City Ballet. KZbin also has the movie adaptation of Pacific Northwest Ballet's version, filmed in the late '80's, which has sets and costumes designed by Maurice Sendak--this one, in particular, leans into the fever-dream aspects of the story! I hope you're feeling better and congrats on your degree!!!

Thank you for this video! Sorry you're feeling sick. We have COVID right now, too. I think you would like The Martian better. Weir is a cocky writer, I think that comes across in the movie, as well, and is part of why it is funny. I wouldn't say the writing is spectacular, but it is a compelling story and was enjoyable to read. I hardly ever read recent fiction. Like, really never, so the fact that it was compelling enough for me to finish and enjoy is a big deal. There is a ton of swearing, and I do remember thinking a few scenes between NASA workers were thin, but I would still recommend to you.

A question on the descriptions of Artemis as I haven't read it: could it be/ supposed to be negative? As in a reflection on what a place with no laws where you just throw people together does to people? So reduced to their basic instincts and needs-based behaviours and thoughts? But done poorly? Or do you think that this is not really contained in how he writes?

I'd watched The Martian when it first came out, had heard a lot about the book and Project Hail Mary, and so when I spotted _Artemis_ in the second-hand bookstore, with its gorgeous cover, it was an instant buy. Thank god I didn't buy it first-hand, Jesus Christ it was so bad. Thank god it was so short, as well. Honestly I could've dealt with the excessive innuendos if the plot was half decent and if Jazz could just stfu for one second about herself.

So sorry you are sick, please feel better soon, thank you for the video. I just got over covid myself, first time ever, got sick on Halloween and still don't have all my energy back .

Several years ago I decided to pick up reading again for the first time since school. I went with The Martian because I like scifi and it was a best seller, so it must be good... Well, after slogging through half of it, I gave up and didn't read another book until recently and finding this channel. So this tracks for me! Get well soon

It's not for everyone. I suppose you have to be in that MacGuyver mindset to enjoy it. If you don't enjoy that "hey look at all this applied science" approach, then, I mean... that's 90% of the point of the book, so then I guess it's like watching a cooking show if you hate cooking or something, lol.

@@safe-keeper1042 yeah, but it wouldn't hurt to add in some character development and maybe I dunno plot?

Hi Emmie, i am very happy to see your new video. I have read the Martian and it was amazing i looove that book so much, and i do reccomend to read it 100%. Later i have seen so bad reviews about Artemis so i decided to skip it. And then i ve recently starterd his new book Haily Mary and it was such a disapointment. I am still shocked that so bad and so fantastic books were written by one author. How is it even possible?

Congratulations on finishing your degree! You guys don't have to present a final thesis to a board or anything? That's how it works here, I'm curious how it works in Canada. Get well soon!
