@@richardhoover8221 I know a guy who lost a friend. The friend he made was when he went in the Air Force. The friend got in some trouble but the “old man” liked him and got him shipped out in 24hours. You see the friend was Franco-American. He and his family all spoke French when amongst themselves. The friend ended up working for a lettered agency as a translator. He was forced to do and witness things a guy should never have to endure. Later I got in touch with him. He refused to come back into my life as he was trying to protect the friendship we used to have. No, he didn’t get killed in VN but his spirit was killed. He was a drug addict who had spiraled down the abyss. I never talked to him again at his request. I lost a friend.

My uncle was career Army, he went twice to Vietnam. ....I worked at a Waffle House; one day a Marine came in and sat in my section, wearing his uniform . His hair was gray. I told him I had read the book, Marine Sniper about Carlos Hathcock; he said he had met him. Then he complimented me on my earrings, which were red, clear and blue spinels. I told him I had worn them during the Vietnam War. He leaned back a little, surprised, saying, "We didn't think anyone remembered us." I reassured him, Oh, yes. There were many of us. Many. Nine days from now I will be 73. I still remember and treasure that day like yesterday. It was an Honor to meet and spend a little time speaking with him.

The book, not the movie, had the better story and a title that said much more, "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young" I cannot forget walking through the barracks at Vung Tau. The men were still asleep and as I passed along, I stopped. There was a young mechanic, sound asleep, looking 15 or 16 and peaceful. I wondered what his mother understood and whether she worried about him every day. I was I suppose lucky, I began by flying an OH-6 in Cambodia and ended in a maintenance unit at Vung Tau. But my other memory is visiting a pilot in the evac hospital and I as looked around the ward, I nearly lost it. I choked up and had to step out. So many badly injured men, a man with his leg off at the hip, a man with badly damaged arms. When I stepped back into the room, the pilot heavily medicated, turned his head, focused his eyes, and quietly said , "Thank you for coming, it helps a lot." I looked him up, he did not die and I hope he is living still. God damn Johnson and Nixon, the one for getting us in and the other for prolonging it so as not to seem week to the voters.
