@@Romanticoutlaw You can't trademark a game, but you can copyright a game. Othello is such an old game (invented in 1883) that its copyright has expired, so now anyone can create a generic video game version of the game. So what the heck is "renegade"?
@agiar20004 жыл бұрын
@@umbra1016 "Renegade", as seen in this video, is exactly identical to Othello in every way except the name. I think it may be because "Othello" as a variation was invented as recently as 1971, and trademarked not long after, so people like those producing ClubHouse, cannot use the name without paying to license it from the Japanese toy company MegaHouse. What still confuses me, though, is how they can get around the trademark by creating a game that is exactly the same, down to the colors and the finest details of play, but just call it a different name. That seems like it would have to be some sort of patent infringement to me, but I don't really know much about intellectual property law. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@lainlly14 жыл бұрын
@@agiar2000 I think since they're all derivatives of Go (~2500 year old game) you can just slap a different name on it and say "it's a Go rule change!" and avoid any litigation. So, technically, Othello is a variant of Reversi that forces the game to start with the center 4 spaces filled with two diagonals (2 black pieces diagonal, 2 white pieces diagonal), whereas, in Reversi, the board starts empty and the first two turns for each player they must play in the center 4 squares, but they can choose to play their pieces horizontally or vertically, if they wish, rather than diagonal. Reversi also doesn't require the pieces to be "light" and "dark", as in Othello, they can be blue/red, coins with heads/tails, or any other way of having the pieces be flippable. Otherwise, yeah, it's the same game.

The way the game explains renegade is so confusing and you just made it make infinitely more sense thank you!

the best thing about this video is that w the disconnect and miscommunication, arin can scream more than he ever has in a non-sonic episode AND Dan hardly acknowledges it -- so surreal

Just gonna post both my copy/paste replies about how the game works, and about the names Othello/Reversi/Renegade - When you place a piece, you capture any of the opponent's pieces directly between it and an existing piece of yours. Can be diagonal or vertical/horizontal, or multiple if you happen to do so. Other workings like only capturing between your placed piece and the very next piece of yours (and not anything past it) can probably be gleaned pretty quick from just watching, now -- Reversi was the original name in 1883, while Othello was a different ruling made in 1971 which is what we know today. (In Reversi, the first four pieces are actually placed anywhere on the board manually, and if you can't make a move, you just lose) Renegade is just a non-copyrighted name for Othello. They could and should use Reversi since that copyright's expired, but technically it's a different ruleset... not that the last 100 games called Reversi used it. -- Also playing IRL isn't really tedious, I've always found the pieces easy to flip quickly, only takes a second or two, and flipping a whole row of pieces feels good anyway lol. Nothing compared to managing money and stuff in Monopoly IMO

Amazing commitment to the brand. 10/10 I've never played this game in my life, nevertheless the grumps make it clear in the beginning how important the corners are just so the inexperienced me could shiver for the next 30 minutes of attempts of giving the opponent the corner. Keep at your best!

I wonder why both Jon and Danny's entire playthroughs of Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past were privated.

Well Jon and Dan never played LoZ, but I think the reason Dan and Arin’s playthrough is privated is because Dan was in a bad head space during the recordings because he had just broken up with an ex of his

@@kingpin6736 wasn't that a link between worlds?
@xavierfrendick65814 жыл бұрын
Kingpin You’re confusing Link to the Past and Link Between Worlds. The latter, Dan has started to play twice - the first time, as you said, he was in a bad place emotionally, the second time... hopefully just on a pause for algorithm reasons, or some such. But there had, previously, been two playthroughs of the former on the channel, which the original comment were referencing - one Arin and Jon, the second Arin and Dan. And both sets of those do seem to be inaccessible, except for recent reuploads by someone else. Ironically (based on your comment), it looks like all of the Link Between Worlds videos are still properly available.
