Young Robert De Niro plays young Al Pacino's dad in what some would call "the best sequel ever". Two of the three hosts of this show wouldn't say that though. Listen to find out whomst!
The next episode will be: Star Wars Attack of the Clones (even though we said something different in the episode- sorry!)

As someone at a reputable film school, no professor has mentioned The Godfather once, so definitely no rose-colored glasses here. And yet it’s pretty apparent they’re easily two of the most impeccably crafted American films of all time. Like most great movies, they require you to meet them halfway. Like a novel, unless you’re actually engaging with the material, you’ll probably be left bored, especially part 2.

Also I think a lot of people forget that the first Godfather was the highest grossing movie of all time when it was released. It was widely beloved by general audiences, not just a critical darling. These days, I think our expectations for constant visual stimulation have unfortunately made it difficult for films like The Godfather to have such mass appeal.

I actually enjoyed the Godfather 2 more than 1 because of Vito Corleone and how they delved in to history of the Corleone's which eventually leads to Michael's ascent to power (which he never wanted in the beginning). I disagree with James that his parts weren't needed. We needed to see how the Godfather came into being and the Vito (Robert De Niro) parts did just that. And on that note I think I am going to re-watch this movie this weekend :)

Two unrelated points :) 1. The Senate hearings were a real-life committee on organized crime. (1963) Cf. The Valachi Papers 2, If you enjoy Al Pacino and John Cazale (Fredo) in this film, you guys GOTTA watch/review Dog-Day Afternoon. One of my favourite films!

I think an important difference between the medium of music and film to consider with James's comparison about repeat watches/listens is that a song is maybe UP TO 30 minutes where as a film is 90+. You have to commit significantly more time to watch a movie multiple times than to listen to a song multiple times.

I may disagree with a lot of his opinions, but tbh he's great to have on a movie podcast because he is much more representative of most modern movie audiences and at least is fairly consistent and thoughtful in his opinions.

I’m pretty sure it’s not a global scale that he applies in his ratings. I remember reading that A. A. Dowd from AV Club explained his rating system somewhat like “has the movie achieved his goals”. Now I don’t know if he’s the first one to do this, but he’s the one I learned this rating system from. Basically, a comedy like Hangover, a drama like Marriage Story and an action film like Mad Max all want to achieve different things and are very different things, rating them against each other is probably impossible. That’s how you can come to a rating where Transformers is a 6 and a Marriage Story is a 5.5 (just examples out of thin air).

I saw The Godfather Part II at a drive-in in 1974. I hadn't seen the first film and didn't understand Part II. I was bored out of my mind. Of course, I was 8 years old at the time. Flash forward 3 years when NBC aired The Godfather : A Novel For Television, showing the 2 films in chronological order with added scenes. Now, at 57 years old, The a Godfather and The Godfather Part II are tied for my all-time favorite film.

btw that guy Vito was friends with, that's Genco who gave name to the family's Genco Oil corporation they used. There are scenes cut with him dying in the Godfather I and there are scenes cut with him in this film where they meet Roth as a young guy and employ him in the family business. iirc

Genco was Vito's wartime Consigliere, and also when Michael sold the house in Godfather 1, the real estate company is also Genco's. Being friends with the Corleone's seems to be good for business.

Riley is totally Kay. Clueless as to what and why the Corleone family is touched by the underworld. Even as Michael tries to get out by Film 3...it's totally summed up by "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." It would seem Riley would advise Michael to go to the Feds and give everyone up and go into witness protection. That might be okay for Michael, he might be able to take his nuclear family with him. But that doesn't protect Connie. That doesn't protect Sonny's family. That doesn't protect his mother. These other underworld people are predators. They will kill you, and everyone in your "house". Every extended cousin they can find. This was made clear by the tragedy of Vito's family in Corleone. So, these predators understand only one thing, bigger predators. And whoever he didn't put away by testifying against them, they would come for him wherever he went. So, no, going to the Feds and squealing on the underworld characters would not protect any besides who he took with him. (this idea of leaving the shadowy world of organized crime and predation is explored in the David Cronnenberg film History of Violence) This story by Mario Puzo is very much like an ancient greek story, when one is touched by the Gods, you can try to your heart's content to change your fate...but your fate will find you, no matter how you try and change. (which may personally chafe at Riley's own world perspective) But the suspension of disbelief must be absolute when viewing a movie for their 2+ hours, otherwise the lens of one's own prejudices and standards pollutes the exchange of ideas. (this is why shakespeare had prologues to remind people to set aside their world views while they are listening to the story, upon completion if they choose to disagree that's fine, but to be bored when others see a rich tapestry of tragedy, that's a character flaw of the audience member.)

Regarding the complaints mentioned about this movie due to not being able to easily follow the plot, edit: which I think are valid and were also my main reasons for liking it less, I'm going to paste my reply to another KZbin video about experiencing films in a theatre vs at home from a couple weeks ago from right after I got to see The Godfather Part 1 in a Dolby theatre for the 50 year anniversary: "What timing! I saw The Godfather Part I in a Dolby Cinema yesterday. I've seen it multiple times and have always really enjoyed it, but I always found it a bit difficult to keep characters straight and therefore the plot at times could get a bit confusing. That kept me from considering it an all time favorite. And the home setups were always well above average including dedicated home theatre rooms. Watching it in an actual theatre made such a huge difference not only in my ability to enjoy the aesthetics, but literally to understand and enjoy the characters and plot better. Especially in a film where so much of the plot isn't stated, but conveyed through how people act and say things. Boy does it make a difference."
@25zvillcb25
@25zvillcb25 2 жыл бұрын
Also worth noting that while today there's a legitimate discussion to be had about the merits or demerits of films based on their enjoyability through different mediums from mobile, to home TV, to full theatre, this was released years before even VCRs were common. Home viewing of films was basically not relevant at all compared to even 20 years ago.

The weird singing shift at the opera was intentional in the film ofc, thats how they would have done it at the theater, to me it seemed obvious that it is supposed to be a record playing at the theater of the singing part. Iirc

I completely agree with Riley on this I just do not get why so many people like these movies, I can see that they are reasonably well made movies, but I would never say that they are great movies much less the best movies ever made. I find the Godfather moves to be slow and dull, perhaps it is because I never found the mafia to be compelling in any way.

I'm making this prediction _before_ I watch this video: Riley hates the movie until the other two explain why it's good. By the end Riley will _say_ that he likes it. (Btw, Riley if you're reading this, I interpret your take as the emotional viewing, whereas David and James are the intellectual viewing. David I feel like you are way to over biased and overly hyped even on a 7th viewing of the film. To give it a 10 out of 10 is just absurd. The first one is clearly more interesting and impactful.
