Well... When you specialise in localising anime aimed at kids, and you end up acquiring a teen-oriented shonen show you do NOT want and clashes with your job, because this is when both uncut localisations, proper subtitles and even shitty needlessly profane fansubs are gaining traction, and yet you're forced to dub it anyway, and you replace the anime's iconic opening with an incredibly campy rap tune for kid appeal... Whaddaya think was gonna happen? Of course people would be up in arms! The irony is that in an era where western content is getting worse, and so-bad-it's-good-camp-appeal has become more and more of a sizeable niche, people have since come around on the One Piece Rap. It's stupid, BEYOND stupid, but it's so campy and fun you couldn't care less. Helps that since, more people have heard the actual opening, "We Are", both through the Japanese audio and the second FUNimation English dub. It's never been a better time to be a fan of older anime from the 1990s and 2000s, I tells ya!

This is the first thing I saw as a kid…and I’m bawling right now at 30 cause of the memories. I saw the American premiere of One Piece and I still love it 15-20 years later. Luffy represents freedom from oppression, and the lowest of the low achieving their dreams, that’s why he’s my hero.

@@acaribun Yeah, orchestral hits. Most prominently in the older NBA, and I think a lot of the current NFL intros. I don't watch a lot of sports but that NBA intro is amazing. Also the song Fatalize in Tales of Symphonia makes plenty use of the orchestral hit. It's just a solid contemporary tone.

4Kids were definitely hypocrites back in the day, because look at how dark TMNT was where you had stabbings, Baxter Stockman being mangled or mutilated by Shredder (Ch’rell), a silhouette of Ch’rell killing Hamato Yoshi, and on top of that Agent Bishop unintentionally having a mutating outbreak that had Donatello indirectly being his victim, may I add more. Most of the censorship was absolute bullshit, like if TMNT were to show stuff like this, I’m sure One Piece would keep some of the stuff or the editing team would find better ways to work around the Explicit Details.

When I first started seeing so many posts and videos online all about the backlash against 4kids Entertainment’s version of One Piece, it mostly caught me by surprise because I had absolutely no idea that it was such a big and popular franchise in Japan with a dedicated fanbase. I remember the promos that showed up on the FoxBox during Saturday mornings and I did catch the show’s intro on a few occasions. But I would never sit through entire episodes because the commercials and the theme song gave the impression that it was a very cartoony and silly childish show. Never would I ever dream that it would be on the same level of anime discussions with the likes of DBZ, Naruto, and Bleach. I thought it would wind up being easily forgotten and dismissed as other shows license by 4Kids like fighting, Foodons, ultimate muscle, and Shamen King.
