The thing about it is that the opening rap fits so much better for the battle-oriented arcs like Enies Lobby & Marineford than a lot of the other openings. The original rapper even made an expanded version that includes Robin, Franky, Brook, & Jinbe.

I remember the difference watching as an adult. As a child, I always felt like I missed an episode somewhere. It never occurred to me about censorship till a few years after 4kids stopped. Then I buy the series in the form of Funimation DVDs to start watching with my ex, who is now still a close anime friend, and as the series goes on, I'm just emotionally gutted day after day in front of my girl. Luckily for me, she liked that sensitive shit, but I remember bawling my eyes out openly the first time I saw that scene. I think if 4kids had made it to the Robin Arc, they would have just quit or ruined it. Thankfully, Funimation did it SOME justice (detracted for a million repeats of "I want to blah, blah, blah" and full episodes of flashbacks). I got to observe my ex, who was adopted, resonate deeply with the thought of whether her bio parent left her out of love or selfishness. Literally felt her emotions radiating off of her like a tangible, fuck-science-fiction actual aura of personal distress. I felt it BEFORE I looked at her. That kind of impact can only happen when you aren't trying to soften the blows.

The 4kids adaptation was my first experience for One Piece. I still remember getting excited seeing the commercials for some new super power pirate anime coming soon! The 4kids dub was actually my introduction to One Piece when I was in middle school. My little brother and I really bonded over it and eventually we wanted to watch the "real" version so we roped our dad into watching it with us. Over time high school got so busy (and the animation got so bad) that we all began reading the manga on our own time. Now we're adults, my brother and I both have partners who we've introduced to One Piece, and on Sundays we get together for dinner and discuss the new chapter. When the Netflix series came out our mom even started to be introduced to the series too! One Piece has honestly been a huge part of my entire family's life for 20 years. It boggles my mind some times.

Glad you loved the voice acting, its easily my favourite part (though the silly name changes might be a close second. Captain Chaser and Trace Heatfist will always hold a special place in my heart.). Lol. Australian Shanks, French Mihawk, Bad Brooklyn Accent Sanji....truly a work of art. Sanji's attack names give me joy as well (if you haven't, look up a compilation of them on KZbin. Its both physically painful and absolutely hilarious.). The fact that 4kids Sanji has an attack named "Leg o'Wham Drumstick Supreme" is perhaps the greatest thing that dub ever did. 😂 Oh, and then there are the Zoro moments. Not just the iconic "Oh hey Luffy, how you doing buddy......LUFFFFFFYYYYYY!!!!!" blood-curdling screech from Whiskey Peak, but the random animal impressions he would do sometimes. Like when we was calling Usopp a chicken (I think he did this at LEAST twice), and that one time he literally BARKED at Daz Bones when they fought in Alabasta. 😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣

4Kids is a guilty pleasure of mine. Because I loved One Piece pretty much from the start. I have two kids and one day when they were still little I was watching it and they were interested. I knew the main series wasn't age appropriate for them at the time. So I watched 4Kids with them they loved it and I tolerated it when they were awake. But it was something we bonded over and when they were older I let them watch the mainline series and read the manga. They still love the series, and it is something we can talk about together and bond over. If I ever have grandkids I'll watch the 4Kids with them as well and see if they like it as well. As a parent of small kids who loves One Piece 4Kids was irreplaceable for me at the time, and I have fond memories of enjoying it with them, which is why sometimes I'll start watching it even though my oldest is grown up and my youngest isn't far off from grown up. If you are a One Piece fan with small kids and you want to share your passion for One Piece with them then 4Kids is a good jumping off point for it.

One of my favorite things I've learned about the 4kids dub is they apparently stopped producing it around the beginning of the Jaya/Skypia arc. Wild how we've gone from 4KIDS to the now current, faithful dub being only like 30 eps behind the sub release because One Piece has been airing so long it's outlasted how anime is actually sold and marketed to a western audience haha Also fun fact, a couple of the 4KIDS voice actors who are fairly prolific now in their own careers, have minor roles/cameos in the current dub. 4KIDS Luffy voices Miss Buckingham Stussy (she plays a lot of old ladies in cartoons and other anime like Pokemon so it really fits), 4KIDS Chopper voices the Sunny in Film Red, etc...

I used to watch 4Kids Saturday mornings every week, alternating between it and KidzWB depending on what show was airing on either channel at the time. So when I was 14 One Piece premiered in August 2004 on 4Kids (at the time known as the FoxBox) it was my very first exposure to the series and I…. I can’t lie, I fell in love with it immediately. From Luffy’s first gum gum rocket I felt in my soul that this series was something special that I would be connected to on a spiritual level. Of course as I got deeper into the series and as I matured I realized how utterly horrendous the 4kids dub is not just as an adaptation, but as an overall product, yet I cannot bring myself to even mildly dislike it. It is what brought me into the greatest story of all time and still had just enough spark of that magic for me to recognize that. So I’ll insult it, make fun of it, laugh it off, but I will never ever hate it or give it any undue disrespect. Without it there would be no One Piece in my world.

Okay, removing death, this. Replacing Laboon with an iceberg (Not Ice-Pops) that. What about 4Kids just flat-out skipping Little Garden? Our introduction to the Giants of Elbaf? Skipping this very short arc affects the following stuff in the long-run: - One of Usopp's goals he wants to accomplish on his quest to become a brave warrior of the sea - Introduction to Mr 3 (who's one of the key players in Impel Down and Marineford. seriously, I think they just haphazardly throw in some dialogue as to why he's chasing the crew and has beef with them in the 4Kids adaptation that doesn't even make any sense in canon) - Oimo and Kashi's heel-face turn against the World Government during Enies Lobby - The New Giant Warrior Pirates allying themselves with the Straw Hat Grand Fleet after Dressrosa - Everything involving Big Mom's backstory in WCI - *JoyBoy's origins and the legend of Sun God Nika*

Yeah this kinda was my gateway to One Piece. I watched it every day before school when I was a little kid and thought it was pretty cool but nothing special. All I remembered about it was the theme song but otherwise thought nothing of it. Then years later in my senior year of high school some friends of mine asked If I "watched/ read One Piece?" And I said "Oh yeah, I remember watching that show, it had a catchy theme song but that's all I remember" and they were like "Dude, don't tell me you watched the 4kids dub..." to which I said "now that you mention it, that's probably not how the original is huh?" And then I spent like 4 months watching the then 450 or so episodes that were available and got fully caught up and re-educated to what One Piece ACTUALLY was and how amazing it is! Simply put: The 4kids dub was so dumbed down that it barely stayed in my mind and felt like nothing special and if it wasn't for my friends properly showing me One Piece; to this day I might have still thought of it as just a dumb, simple kids show.

I think the biggest resentment I have for this dub is how badly it held back One Piece from achieving the popularity it deserved in it's earlier phases. It would take at least a decade for One Piece to carve a strong niche in the anime comunity again, and at least another decade for it to REALLY blow up and enjoy the popularity that it has enjoyed in Japan since it's first chapter. Nowadays I can look back to it for the so bad that it's good localization that it is.

yup, this was my exposure to one piece. the first episode debuted september in 2004 alongside me kinda falling for Yu Yu Hakusho (togashi sensei's other series) a year later, i stumbled upon a vgcatz comic page going over how wrong the characters sounded, all the while i found myself genuinely kinda into the "Rogue"-Town arc & Baroque Works saga by that point. Due to Kuina not dying in it, i think it made me even more unironically think that Tashigi was just her with amnesia

The 4kids dub was my first experience with One Piece. I was in my late teens so well beyond the target age group, but still intrigued by the weird rubber pirate boy and his adventures. The horrible dubbing was what drove me to find the manga and I’m so glad I did!

i was 10 when the dub came out, so it was my first exposure to the series. Watched it, loved it, then forgot about it for a couple years. Eventually picked up a copy of SJ when I recognized Luffy on the cover and was shocked at how deep and compelling the plot actually was. Been a fan ever since, so thanks 4Kids! Also the rap is iconic 🔥

Yeah 4Kids One Piece was my gateway for sure. I will say going from the 4Kids dub to the more well known English dub rocked me as a teenager since that aired on Toonami but now that I've grown up. I appreciate it in hindsight for introducing me to the series that I've come to truly love and enjoy.

That opening theme song is a banger, though

My introduction to one piece was me staying up on a Saturday night at some point in middle school while they were reruning the series on toonami and my first episode was Franky's introduction in Water 7, where everyone is groaning about him showing up and are yelling at him to leave and not bothered him and then he gets into a fight with Luffy, I thought he was so cool and yeah he is I was right but after his introduction I had watched all of water 7, Enies Lobby, and Thriller Bark every Saturday night, giller episodes and all and boy was it such a fun experience, they're still may favorite arcs because of that

Yeah this was my gateway into One Piece, I watched til I caught up, then I switched to the subs around Skypiea and it quickly became clear that I missed something so I went back and watched from the beginning. Switched to the manga around Marine Ford.

This was literally my gateway to one piece as a kid. I watched it the day. It came out years later I am still haunted by this gross adaptation, but the wrap the theme song is amazing.

This was the show I grew up watching and got me into the manga. I still remember hearing diable Jon being explained by the heat of the devil in a Brooklyn accent.

Have you seen the moment with Croc and Luffy, it’s so unserious. “If this is a desert toilet, then that makes you, desert doo-doo.” I CAN’T. 😂😂😂

4kidz and shonen jump were my start in One Piece and I have never looked back. The 4kidz rap is one of if not the best One Piece opening.

I remember as a kid writing an angry letter to 4kids after seeing the One Piece dub. I had found the show when I lived overseas, and when I came to the states the show didn't air until years later. I was so excited to be able to watch the show again then was completely disappointed by the changes. They took all the seriousness out of the show.

As someone who didn’t grow up with this I laughed tears when I first saw this as an adult… this was crazy to me

Yes. I watched the 4Kids Dub growing up and I am not ashamed to admit that I loved it as a kid! Those fond memories are what got me to pick up the series again in college (thankfully Funimation had begun dubbing by that point). I definitely don't remember all the terrible stuff in the 4Kids version, but I have seen it as an adult and I am sometimes shocked that I still liked it so much! 😅

The 4kids dub was my 1st experience with One Piece. Been a weekly reader since Wano. Yeah it was bad introduction to the series but it did grap me into it. Great video as always.

Im one of the ones who saw this as well as yugioh on 4kids and fell in love with the series. So when i eventually learned of the real version on toonami, and the manga as well, it made the series that much better. Started from the bottom

I think the last 4kids dubbed episode was one of the first episodes of sky island arc where the galleon falls from the sky and it looks like it crashed into the Merry. Hilarious place to end this car crash of an adaption.

IIRC, 4kids also skipped Little Garden entirely. Specifically to get to Chopper faster to sell merch.
