That thing is basically a single-edged Japanese take on the Aztec macahuitl. Probably not consciously but just compare the two. The macahuitl is a flat wooden club kind of like a cricket bat with knapped obsidian blades glued into *both* edges. Those blades are horribly sharp and although brittle will inflict horrific wounds. Being able to hold a finer and thus sharper edge than steel (look it up) the Wolverine effect is nearly negligible. The Aztecs used wood and obsidian only because they didn’t develop iron working. @lankymcswanky21765 ай бұрын
I feel like the bottom blades are mostly unnecessary. I don't see those bottom ones doing much, and it adds a ton of weight. Which i think it being so heavy helped it power through the cutting tests so easily. So i think this "sword" having an optimized disign would just end up being a multi-headed axe, removing like the bottom 3-4 blades. Perhaps adding some counterweight with a pommel or something if needed

@@ShiningDarknes oh don't get me wrong, it's a cool looking weapon. The point is it being a big badass looking shark themed weapon for the big shark guy, and it does that. It's just a fun exercise to think how to improve a design while still trying to keep its uniqueness.
@AllanTidgwell5 ай бұрын
By that argument, sharpening the bottom half of a sword is unnecessary since you tend to slash with the upper half and stab with the tip. If the enemy is within/past the dangerous range of the weapon, then the weapon loses its efficacy. This is a common issue for Spearmen. Heck, if you hit someone with the haft of an axe it'll still hurt but it won't devastate like getting hit by the blade. The same applies to the haft of a mace The solution to this is to extend the dangerous region to include more of the over-all weapon
@DZ-X35 ай бұрын
@@AllanTidgwell That sounds like an argument for sharpening the bottom half of the tooth-stick's haft. Maybe into some kind of metal edged weapon, like a long blade. At no point when designing the perfect axe, would you decide that it really needs extra axeheads all the way down the handle.
@lankymcswanky21765 ай бұрын
@@AllanTidgwell This is fair, although obviously weapons have had this issue before and they were still very prominent. A solution to keep it more swordish could be like DZ said keep the bottom half sharp, or you could even just have smaller teeth, because this is still supposed to be a sword I suppose.

I think it is necessary to make several lore accurate improvements to this design.(based on 1:23) Make the handle bigger, under three arms and add a pommel for balance. Move the shark's teeth to the tip and set them as if with an overlap. Perhaps this, as well as the best handle, will be able to greatly change the feeling of the "sword"
@Kyle-kc4kr5 ай бұрын
If I had to guess I'd say that the weight combined with the sharp serrations and how the serrations are spaced out are aiding in the cutting. The weight is probably dragging the serrations in such a way that causes the actual blades on each "tooth" to maximise its cutting power.
@kfrostie5 ай бұрын
Great video! Loving the screen tested channel!
@Red-iu6wu5 ай бұрын
one thing to keep in mind is that with normal serrations is you have a bunch of small teeth scraping along a surface this will give more drag as it cuts material and gives it a bigger chance for it to get caught. with teeth that big you basically have a pointed axe head as only one tooth is hitting at a time on all your water bottle/noodle tests so its chopping instead of sawing like a normal serrated blade would. also you should put the blades closers together
@sjmcc135 ай бұрын
Ya, manga and Live Action look like the blades are effectively touching.
@Pystro5 ай бұрын
On the *wolverine effect:* Yes, the sword has like 3-ish times as much contact area as the *tip of a sword* would have *in a thrust.* But doesn't it have far less contact area than the *edge of a normal sword in a slash?* Those points poked into Tony's back by an inch or so. Would a normal sword have a similar cut depth, or would it stop after less than half an inch? And keep in mind that the first few millimeters of cut depth is affecting only skin, and only after that you start hitting muscle and internals. So any cutting damage beyond those first few millimeters counts for more stopping power. The only kind of situation where the greater number of contact points creates a massive problem is if you hit armor with gaps (segmented armor or chain mail maybe). If some of the tips hit gaps and some hit strong points, then the strike will still get stopped. Or in other words, you have to be lucky to hit gaps on ALL tips for the strike to go through the armor. But again, that's more of a detriment when compared to stabs, slashes with a normal sword against chain mail will basically never penetrate through.

With it acting like a "Pick" based sword, I just want to picture it with a more appropriate design than what you accomplished, but it's still a good test. Only 2 Design changes I'd make: 1. Using a single piece of pipe for the whole weapon, but weighting the handle side so there's some counter balance. The pipe's blunt side/teeth flat side being used for defenses 2. Getting the teeth closer together, in anime/live-action, the teeth are literally on top of one another, but without cutting out the slots in the pipe and welding them in, a bit challenging to do. 3. (And not show canon) Add a hilt guard along the pipe's back to catch a glancing weapon. It only needs a guard that goes backwards and curls away from the wielder, and a reverse tooth/shark fin would probably do the trick. Would definitely need more counter balancing then though. I feel the sword would easily get to heavy to be practical, but it certainly sends a message. Overall, I think making it 1/2 the size was the move to go, and I'm just as surprised as you are as to how efficient it is at delivering damage/slicing. I want to imagine it digging into flesh, and the raw strength required to pull towards yourself instead of out for the most damage possible. But that'd require a ballistic dummy or pig belly.

It's basically a bunch of weird, pointed hatchets stacked in a row. Definitely dangerous, but less versatile than a sword. I think it would rely more on the shock and intimidation factor than any mechanical benefits since it's basically an indecisive sword/axe hybrid that doesn't improve on the strengths of either.

I guess the reason it cuts so well might be that, as long as you panage to avoid the spaces between the teeth, each tooth is essentially a very broad thrusting blade going into the target, and where a normal blade cuts with an edge of about the width of the bottle youre cutting, here the edge of the whole tooth is used to spread that pressure over, which reduces the resistance going in. Also, those teeth are very thin, which again makes for very little resistance going through the target.

You should call it "Tested Tier" or "Tyr Rating". The second has a ton of references in 2 words

Gonna be honest...if you removed the bottom 2 blades and extended the pommel up that far, made the teeth a bit smaller (maybe even slightly curved), reduced the space between each blade a bit more, and maybe made the blades slightly more thicker and sharper it could probably be a somewhat effective cutting, piercing, and sawing (I said thicker teeth due to the fact I don't think teeth as slim as yours would be able to saw effectively/without possibly breaking as easily...same with why smaller would probably work too and in the anime I do remember Arlong using the sword to saw through opponents as well so sawing motions were definitely an intended kind of attack for said weapon there at least even if it may not be ideal with a sword in real life) weapon as with the longer pommel you may be able to wield it a bit more comfortably...granted may become more of an axe but not really a polearm at that point though.

Works along similar lines to the Aztec Obsidian Club Sword it looks like.

trim the teeth to be spike-like fangs that taper to the point and back down toward the grip to cut down on weight; drop the first 2 teeth to lengthen the grip. add at least a minor guard to prevent slippage of your hand toward the blade. a pseudo-polearm i can get behind.

You could make worse weapons if you manage to get into a home depot during the zombie apocalypse, that's for sure.

Cool weapon. One thing I would change instantly though is that I would remove the bottom blade and extend handle to that space.
