Mihawk's introduction is great, because it's such a curveball. At this point we've established a bit of a pattern; Luffy and company arrive at an island, befriend some locals, beat up a bad guy and get a new crewmember. But Mihawk illustrates that this world is a lot bigger than just our main cast. Luffy is a bit of a big fish in a small pond, and Mihawk is a glimpse of what the Grand Line is really like and the dangers they'll face. It's a bit of a reality check that their journey is just getting started and they have a lot to learn. I'm really happy with the set for the Baratie; in general this live action series investing heavily in physical sets is such a breath of fresh air when all these live action movies and series have so much CGI thrown in, and it makes you wish Baratie was a real place. I think the casting is great in general but sometimes it's just uncanny. Steven Ward just feels like he was born to play Mihawk and the character just stepped right off of the page. Looking forward to seeing more reactions!

The set pieces, yes! I am obsessed with all of them, I keep going back while editing and seeing all the small details in them and it's crazy the level of detail and care they took to make you feel so immersed in the world. I also really want Kaya's room! I also am fascinated by Mihawk, I took so many notes while editing episode 5 and talked about him a bit at the beginning of six when I was filming today. When he says he would still do whatever he wants to Garp, I believe him, but he still takes Garp's calls....

Taz Skylar, the actor playing Sanji, had no previous knowledge of martial arts when he got cast. He started training for hours every day, up to eight or ten hours a day during pre-production! I have to say, the thing I love most about this show is the feeling. If you know the Anime or Manga, you clearly know that they changed a lot. Fantastic reaction! I’ve always felt that Zoro went through so many complex emotions in that last scene, just most of it is buried under his stoic demeanor. Sheathing his sword and letting Mihawk strike that blow was his own strange form of accountability. He challenged Mihawk to a duel to the death, and realizing he was soundly outclassed he owned up and prepared to die without any wounds on his back (a symbol that he turned to run or otherwise didn’t face things head on). I like to believe this gesture was one of the things that really caught Mihawk’s interest. That “magnificent” line was one of the first times we see Mihawk look like anything other than bored. Man just strikes me as languid and almost bored with the lack of challenge in his life. And after all the easily won fights, he finally sees this young upstart just might be something special not just with skill but his sense of character. Saying “magnificent” was perhaps the highest compliment he could have given in his eyes.

Thank you! After reading through comments and editing the episode I appreciate that scene and Zoro's actions a lot more now. I'm also very intrigued by Mihawk's character because he's kind of a wild card like Luffy to me
@brankosimic82034 ай бұрын
You said Zoro should just give up and try again, but that’s not how it works. It’s a duel to the death. Zoro was outclassed and defeated, so he decided to die with dignity, with no scars on his back. Mihawk spared him because he saw his potential, but that’s mercy and not according to the rules of the duel. That’s why Zoro is so disappointed in himself; he doesn’t want mercy-he would rather die. That’s why he cries and pledges to never lose again. He doesn’t want to feel like that ever again.
@goodaimshield11154 ай бұрын
It's not that Zoro should have just given up, it's just that he should have had 2 brain cells and know he couldn't defeat Mihawk. It's like you're playing with the mc of a videogame for 5 minutes and jump stright to final boss, lol. Half of Luffy's crew (actually most of them but for a couple) are just big delulu, that's why my faves are secondary non strawhat charaters, lol XD I love them, but they're too delusional for my liking.
@brankosimic82034 ай бұрын
Was Zoro arrogant and prideful? Certainly. Was he unaware of Mihawk’s true strength? That’s also true. However, his attitude is largely understandable. In the manga, Zoro himself said, 'The world’s strongest can’t be this far away.' He didn’t grasp Mihawk’s true power until he faced him, as he and the crew had largely stayed within the East Blue, except for one notable exception. Moreover, Zoro showed commendable resolve by fighting to the end, despite being aware of his own limitations. While you can critique his delusions and overconfidence, it's important to remember that the line between bravery and foolishness is quite thin
@SkullzJoker124 ай бұрын
One thing that the LA didnt do (small detail, doesnt matter) is that Mihawk actually wanted to attack Zoro from behind when Zoro was devastated. Its Zoro turning around and proudly accepted his fate that changed his mind.

20:58 And trust me, the Warlords are no joke. To reiterate what Helmeppo tells Coby, the 7 Warlords (or Shichibukai in Japanese) are 7 incredibly powerful pirates who, in exchange for their bounties being frozen, have to assist the World Government & Marines with any issues that they need them for. If you continue with the series, you will meet all of them, and they all have major roles in the story. In fact, part of the reason why One Piece is as long as it is is because of Oda establishing the Warlord system. After establishing Mihawk as a member of the group, he felt the need to establish all of them. He didn’t plan them originally. He thought it would’ve been a cool detail for Mihawk. To avoid spoilers but give newcomers something to look forward to, I always call them by codenames or monikers, like how I call Mihawk “the Hawk-Eyed Man”. There is also the Desert King, the Heavenly Demon, the Tyrant, the Snake Princess, the Master of Shadows, & the First Son of the Sea.

Garp couldn't stay for long when he visited home to see Luffy since he is a marine, he left Luffy in the care of the villagers at windmill village, hence why shanks calls him a street urchin with no family to speak of a few episodes ago... he had never seen Garp on the island and never saw Luffy with family, he was always hanging out in the towns bar before shanks influenced his admiration for pirates, which in turn led to Garp putting Luffy in the care of some more hardened acquaintances deeper in the woods of their island to toughen him up towards becoming a marine and keep him away from pirates.

Luffy has 2 brain cells. The first brain cell is devoted to finding friends. The second brain cell is devoted to analyzing fights. When he's not in a fight and he doesn't have to look for friends, he instead is looking for food. Also, Garp's biggest flaw is his impatience. That coupled with his freakish strength and things have a tendency to collapse around him. Luffy isn't "unlocking" powers, he's learning how his powers work, basically increasing his moveset, and learning when and where those moves are most effective. He's basically been training how to use his body for a decade. Now that he's getting into real fights, he's learning what works.

@@catchingupkate It's more that the main function of the Warlords is to scare people away from becoming pirates. So, for example, a pirate with an extremely over-the-top reputation could become one, even if they don't necessarily live up to it. I'm honestly surprised that I never hear anyone else seem to mention this, but a big theme of the manga is being willing to risk your life for your dreams and what you believe in, and one area where the live-action diverges is that it seems to have a major tendency to shy away from that theme. For example, one of Luffy's earliest lines is him pointing out that he's fully aware of the possibility of dying trying to find the One Piece, and he's perfectly fine with it if that happens. This fight is another major example of that, given all of the apparent suggestions that Luffy was in the wrong for letting Zoro fight Mihawk at all. In the manga, the duel was far more spur-of-the-moment, so there wasn't really an opportunity for Luffy to object anyway, but the fact that he didn't interfere despite very obviously wanting to because he knew how important it was to Zoro was what earned him Mihawk's respect.
@ninafujisaki83494 ай бұрын
I know it can be frustrating to watch, but that was Zoro's duel. He asked for it, his honor as a swordsman and his dream were completely tied to it. Luffy nor no one else could've interveined without those being tainted. I agree with you that Zoro wasn't ready, he definitely wasn't, but just explaining why, once the duel started, Luffy didn't step in when it was clear that Zoro was gonna lose.

It’s always insane that Zoro came up against someone like Mihawk so early. When you see the absolute monsters he is considered as strong as, probably top 5 in the world 😅

I think that Zoro immediately challenging Mihawk doesn't make much sense because of the stuff they cut out of his back story how kuina dying from falling down the stairs and her father telling Zoro humans are such fragile things. Someone he looked at as someone his superior and destined for greatness died in such a sudden and mundane way makes you think yeah I could die any second I need to do what I can in this moment

Yes, that does make a lot of sense, thank you! I'm really looking forward to reading the manga after I finish the live action to get the deeper story/lore

I think it's interesting to hear your opinion. I hope it's ok if I throw some things in there. One Piece is a work deeply rooted in Japanese philosophy, history , and mythology. To understand Zoro, you have to understand the moral codex of bushido. So his choice absolutely made sense and wasn't made out of nativity. Also to understand Luffy you have to understand that Luffy is never ever going in the way of the dreams of his nakamas or anyone he cares about not out of nativity (as well as Zoro) because 1. for Luffy getting your dream crushed is more hurtful than dying. To explain why this is, I would have to spoil the plot, which I won't gonna do. And the 2. reason is because he trusts them this much. So, in his mind, there is no reason to ever doubt them for a second.

Always okay to help fill me in on stuff, that's why I love having this channel. I appreciate the explanation, I'd never heard of bushido thank you :)

@catchingupkate You are really welcome! I as well was blown away when I started to get deeper into the manga and anime 20 years ago and found out about all this stuff. Oda is a genius. A real genius by putting bits and pieces about history and mythology into his work so beautifully. Sprinkled by a lot of creativity. Not only will you find a lot of Japanese mythology but also from a lot of other countries as well. But still, it's so deeply rooted into its Japanese roots, which is sadly sometimes kinda lost in translation.
@sakanamichan37144 ай бұрын
When you read the manga-I gotta warn you, Sanji is more of the “comedic pervert” side of things than the live action’s “comedic simp” style. The author, Oda, definitely comes out of that ‘80s/early ‘90s pop culture, and started writing OP in ‘97. There’s an odd mixture of some really progressive ideas, but also some kinda dudebro/lad humor.

I appreciate the heads up and context :) If it's a good story (I know it is) I can put that aside. I really like Haruki Murakami and I think similar things have been said about his writing.

I think the best part about this video is one particular insight you had and commented on that I'm not going to point out in specific. You are far too smart and I suspect you will draw spoiler-like inferences if I make a point out of it, but fans will know. Regarding Luffy letting Zoro do his thing.. it is worth noting that every person who joins the crew has their own reasons for joining. Their own dream. Sure, they are friends, but Zoro wants to be the strongest swordsman and Luffy wants to be the Pirate King. Luffy is not going to stand in the way of Zoro's dream any less than Zoro will stand in the way of Luffy's dream. A kid who hasn't seen the world and can't even swim wants to be the Pirate King? Luffy is even less capable of reaching his dream than Zoro is on an objective level; at least Zoro has spent his entire childhood swordfighting, but Luffy hadn't even been on a rowboat for a day before he managed to sink it and have to stash himself away in a barrel. A key realization is that they are pirates with dreams, and chasing those dream may come at the cost of their lives. Luffy understands this (although he comes really face to face with it in this episode) and Zoro understands this, too. In One Piece, dreams are not just fanciful things that serve as a nice goal, but truly things you'd be willing to die for to accomplish. Usopp's dream is to simply be brave enough to risk his life and overcome his own cowardice. As for Nami? She's complicated.

Aww thank you 🥹. I do miss a lot though that's why I love comments like yours helping me understand better. I guess I'm like Nami (from what I've seen) I am an older sister so when I see someone putting themselves in danger I care about I don't want them to 😂

In One Piece world there is a central concept of ambition/conviction, someone who dream something especially dream as big as "Strongest Swordsman in the World" should not run from a "necessary battle". It is safe to say if he ever run then he will never achieve his dream. That's why Zoro said, "I feel like if I evade, something important like dream Will be lost forever". (I paraphrase the line) This ambition/conviction explain why Mihawk able to slash a large ship from far away, but I Will stop there, because it would be a spoiler.
@catchingupkate4 ай бұрын
Thank you for the explanation :)
@Entropi_924 ай бұрын
@@catchingupkatealso the line Mihawk said after knowing Luffy's goal, "That's more threcherous path than defeating me". Also give a hint about concept of ambition in OP. In OP world there is only 0 or 100, there is no such thing in between. The fight between Zoro and Mihawk is meant to be happen, if he don't do that fight to prepare for another day, say goodbye to his dream.

Rubber duckies! You can't see in the picture but there is a course and 100's of volunteers who pick them up, dry them off, and count them all to reuse the next year :). Now that you have met Mihawk, you should remember that there can be good Warlords and bad Warlords. Mihawk is one of the better ones, although closer to the middle because on the Good to Bad scale he is either 3rd best or right in the middle. That said, if I am rating the seven warlords on a good to bad scale, spoiler warning, I will do so below, not that the names will mean anything to anyone who doesn't already know. . . . . . . . Best to worst (Good vs Evil) 1 Bartholomew Kuma (Good) 2 Jinbei (Good) 3 Dracule Mihawk (Neutral) 4 Boa Hancock (Neutral) 5 Geko Moria (Evil) 6 Crocodile (Evil) 7 Don Quixoute Doflamingo (Possibly Satan?)

I'd like to explain Luffy and Garp's relationship, but i cant do it without spoiling. Grandpa is kinda right about wanting Luffy to be a marine, but he also understands his desire of being a pirate as they have very similar personalities and they both value freedom. A good example is when he told Coby that he could have been a fleet admiral if he wanted to, but he'd have to give up his freedom. Nothing is black or white in this story. Its all grey. Good and evil marines, good and evil pirates and so on. I really hope you'll start reading the manga or watching the anime after you finish this cause you have no idea what you're missing on. If i were to compare, watching the live action is similar to watching Lord of the Rings until the fellowship leaves Rivendell. This world is wonderful, immense and very alive P.S. even though he hates that Luffy became a pirate, he's proud as hell of his grandson hahaha

There's the individual 7 warlords who work for the government. But the top 4 strongest crews in the OP world are called "Yonkos" or "Emperors". They are in a completely different level. By the point we meet them, the show will be a completely different story. Some of the characters you initially hate with all your soul will end up becoming some of your favorite characters in all of fiction. In my own humble opinion, I've been watching OP for 20 years and I consider it to be the greatest story humanity has ever told.

Random fact: The Don Krieg fight is severely cut down, but it's reasonable. In the original, Mihawk annihilates Don Krieg's fleet, but because of bad weather he manages to escape on his flagship and is then in hiding in East Blue because he's still being hunted by him. The starving guy who wanders into the restaurant and tells them about his armada getting annihilated is actually Dong Krieg's right hand, Gin. It all eventually leads to Don Krieg arriving at Baratie and intending to commander it, which eventually leads to the fight between Luffy and him. Don Krieg getting axed by Mihawk is honestly a fitting ending since he's the kind of guy for whom no tactic is too low.
