Great review, as a lifelong one piece fan this makes me very happy. My fav was always luffy and zoro, however one piece is such a good story that you'll likely fall in love with every single crewmate, the villains also get more intense. I'm really happy that non fans are enjoying the show. When I went through difficult times one piece was always one of those things that made me happy, I hope it does so for other people as well.

If they managed to succeed with Drum island and Alabasta Arc. This show will go more further and probably will be one of the best netflix show. Because the future Arcs are on whole another level. Every Arcs comes with a back story of both Protagonist/Antagonist side with unpredictably beautiful ending. One piece is not the kinda anime suitable for live action but seems like these guys knows how to get honey out of comb. fingers crossed 🤞

You called out something very accurate - part of what makes this a great adaptation that the same elements (like Luffy’s enthusiasm) are identical driving forces in both live action and source material. This feels like the recipe for a great adaptation, and casting inaki was a really great move.

I know many will disagree but I would recommend you to read the manga and not watching the anime. For pacing a time consuming reasons. So they were able to use wide shots because most of the actors actually can fight and perform in those roles without stunt doubles. It allows the cinematographers more freedom in how they design shots because they don’t have to rely on crappy overused cuts or obscuring the characters faces with rear shots. The fight sequences prove once again the casting was on point.

As a long-time One Piece fan who's been reading the manga since the early 2000's, I was initially skeptical about the choice to adapt it into live action. Obviously anime-to-live-action adaptations don't really have a good track record, but especially in the case of One Piece, I wasn't confident that a production could faithfully translate One Piece's unique style and tone. One Piece is a story that skillfully navigates between outrageous and ridiculous comedy, to deep personal drama, and after watching the live action series, I feel like the entire team was able to capture that same navigation wonderfully. I'm looking forward to this series continuing, but I also hope it inspires people to check out the source material as well.

All I have to say as a fan of yours, the anime series, and the manga is: PREACH! i literally just finished catching up on the anime, over a thousand episode in about a year and it flew by. In the midst of catching up with the manga but all that to say is I finished the netflix adaption in practically one sitting a loved it. Agree with all your points 100% and would like to add that I loved the score, pacing, and another huge shoutout to the casting; it’s wonderfully and seemingly effortlessly diverse making it feel like it’s showcasing how broad the in-universe world is and all the appeal of One Piece as a property in itself. I honestly couldn’t imagine nor remember a better live-action adaptation of similar work. Really hoping it clicks for other fans old and newcomers alike and we get several more seasons. Obviously not for everyone but I hope it finds it’s audience.

haven't seen you in a vid (my fault) since GoT season7 reviews on collider.... anyways, as a long term OP fan (since early 2010) I really enjoyed this adaptation quite a lot. I do find some changes let's say curious, but mostly from a nitpicky standpoint. The core was hit so right on the mark. and seeing people not that into anime/manga get the charm, getting charmed by it, with all its quirkiness, even by manga/anime standards is so cool - as you said - getting people to check out the source material, like how the LotR movies made me read the books way back when. I would recommend reading the manga though, it's very much easier to digest, and if you just wanna check it out at first, also rather cheap through VIZ. There is a lot of good to be said about the anime adaptation (voice acting [can only speak for JP dub] and music in particular), but especially after 200ish episodes (an absurd number, but out of 1070+ currently not really) the pacing starts to get increasingly worse

If you do end up seeking out the source material I would strongly recommend the manga over the anime. One Piece's anime production runs faster than the manga (1 episode per week vs. 3 chapters per month) despite the fact that the industry standard for anime dictates an adaptation of 2-4 chapters per 24 minute episode. This can result in the anime being sluggish and hard to watch as opposed to the quick, to the point storytelling of the original medium. Reading it feels like the next amazing, exciting thing is coming just around the corner whereas watching it often leaves me begging to move on to the next scene, which both sound like the same thing but feel very different in the moment. One Piece is my favorite thing ever so I am overjoyed by the apparent success of this adaptation and very touched by your enthusiasm for it, but if you want to continue down this rabbit hole please be aware of the better tunnel.
