Just for the historical part of the magic, this trick was invented by Cardini and published by John Northern Hilliard in the Greater Magic. It was one of my favourite to perform before learning skills. Still a great trick!

I still don't get the relavance of the cut/short card. If they are counting and flipping the cards then flipping after choosing the last card then it will always be in the chosen numbered position of the deck when those get flipped at the end. That seems obvious.

but its hard to cut out an exact number of cards, without actually county or taking a card out everytime the point of the trick is that you can pickup that many card everytime and you can also cut the card before asking the number, so its a little bit more magic in their perspective then by showing the card is the same one, is like 100% proof of the trick going right same amount of cards, same exact card. because they can be suspicious that you might have count 2 card as 1 or something to "correctly" count the number of cards

Oh I see now. So if that's the case I would have cut the correct number BEFORE asking the secret number and asked them to count and pause on the last card for the reveal. This would role the two impressive feats into one. But that's why I love shwood's tricks. It's up to the performer to choose that sort of detail.

*Brian, why do you need a short card?* They literally count 12 cards, then place that stack on TOP of the deck, therefore it's the 12th card from the top... and when you "cut", you still used the top half of the deck, that *literally* cannot fool anybody, even if you do cut exactly 12 cards.

Danny451 Fuentes the answer is generally that the counted cards leave a different "feel", even with a plain deck this is actually sometimes easy to do as people don't always completely flush the deck properly. did you watch the video? It's literally a SHORT CARD

I don't know I think the more impressive part is cutting exactly the number they imagined. It's quite obvious that they put the cards facedown and that if you cut to that many cards it would be their card because they put it under that many.

I think a better version of this trick would be to use a Key Card on top instead of a Short Card since a key card can be impromptu and maybe even have them shuffle the deck and 80-90% of the time the cards will stay together and you've just done a find your card without ever seeing or touching the deck (excluding finding their card obviously). Personally I'd perform this before a short card becaus it also adds a step that makes it harder to solve, shuffling, I knew how to do the trick and what was going to happen the moment he put the cards back on top and Brain turned around, but adding some mixing to it gives it a much better effect I think.

The cutting the correct amount is the only real trick here. Once that's shown to be the case, the fact that it's a cut to their card is obvious. You need some false shuffles/cuts before cutting. Then, first reveal their card, then count the number of cards.

I just thought of a better version of this trick. Disregard whatever card was chosen... and just make the trick about guessing how many cards they originally chose. Once you have cut "exactly" the same amount of cards... whether or not it is their card becomes irrelevant, and just a meaningless distraction. If anything, it helps to giveaway or over-shadow the more important part of the trick... which is knowing how many cards they picked.

The first time you didn't cut 19 cards. You just cut to the middle and took the top. So the short card wasn't necessary at all. But also it wasn't much of a trick, since you asked for the number of cards flipped, then counted back to the first card. Did this really fool anybody?

With scizzors and a steady hand, cut a sliver off one of the shorter edges.

The easiest part of the trick to figure out was how you wound up on the same card they selected, given you were specifically told the number of cards that they selected. This is just common sense that you would wind up on the same card after they flipped the face up cards over. The trickier part is figuring out that there was a short card. You could even go further and tell your audience that you were going to count the number they selected and for them to whisper their number to an assistant, still leaving the impression that you shouldn't know the number they selected, which you don't, but it doesn't matter.

I...don't get it. I don't even see a trick here. What am I not seeing. You flip X cards on top. you look at card #x, you turn that stack over, you count to X, and that card is the card they saw. I mean of course it is. I feel dense. What are we supposed to be surprised by?

The trick is he supposedly cut directly to their card before they said how far down it was. Even if they tell him the number of cards down it is to just pick up the exact amount you need in one go is extremely difficult unless you're cheating. Try it out for yourself. Get a deck of cards, pick a number, then try to pick up that exact amount of cards with one hand by cutting the deck and without counting the cards you're picking up. Chances are you can't.

It being the correct card is the proving point. You could double count cards or count two cards as one if you cut incorrectly. This proves you had exactly the number of cards.

I would have been surprised if the n-th card flipped by the magician was anything BUT what it was before, as no one changes the order and no one reshuffles... so I guess the entire trick relies on cutting EXACTLY to the correct amount of cards. First time Bryan performed, it was not even a trick.
