We can see the point you are making, pure KARMA. Thailand's society and economy demanded the expansion of cars and other road-based transport because they saw immense benefits. What the film hopefully shows is that that by favoring cars and roads over canals and boats, BKK lost vital canal infrastructure that it needs to survive as a liveable city.

Forty years ago, My home town in south of Thailand, our village besided the river where food, fruit and vegetable were carried from garden and farms in the upper river via the boat. Finally, all the shop in the was closed, ran out of business due to the coming automobile. The business was moved to the near village besided the road instead.

In my opinion, everything vital in this country has changed according to the absolute authorization. When canals were abandoned, they were justified uncivilized and put everything into them to cover it up, they even build the roads on top of it like I will never see you again. But when it comes to roads, they eventually showing as neglectful as they did to the canals. Authorizer just love to make orders but don't have a sense to keep things in order. Canal system won't come to life again under this very reign. Both canals and roads would be filled with trash as they try to figure it out how to cover these up and mess up the new setup again. Thais never smile.
@denseone2 жыл бұрын
Well, she is partly right. Kings Rama IV and V began public works along Western models of their time so European Empires would not use the excuse of colonizing Siam to “civilize” it. That is why public works in that period also employed Germans, Italians, British, Dutch, French professionals to design and construct it. While also ensuring that the Thais quickly learned how to do it themselves…these efforts were only slowed with the Pak Nam incident when the French threatened to bombard the Grand Palace, only to be restarted following the Siamese Revolution of 1932.

My family home in Bangkok’s historic Dusit district still faces a now defunct outlet for the Prem Prachakon canal, which actually links to Phadung Krung Kasem canal that links to the Chao Phraya River, but access to the canal is interrupted by low bridges and development encroachment, so now my house is the only remaining house with the original canal front still intact since our neighbors have filled their canals to extend their land, so now we have a pond instead of a canal, with huge cat fish that somehow found its way to the pond during floods.

Speaking from experience here. The real reason most people, myself included, still prefer driving is two fold. 1. It actually takes me longer on the boat. Driving downtown takes about an hour for me. Taking the boat then the metro takes about two. 2. The Thai metro is arguably the most expensive in the world (relative to minimum wage.) It actually costs me less to drive than to take the boat, then the metro. They need to work on lowering the cost of the metro. Sadly, it's actually going up. Having said all of this, these boats are actually great. I've been on a few myself. They're definitely a better option than buses in my opinion.

@onalonan3 жыл бұрын
I think it's already too much for 10% land used for roads(not 8%) compare to the USA that has less than 1% of the land area that covered by roads, and compare to England that only has 1.2-1.5% of the land occupied by road. If you live in Bangkok everywhere is the road it's really hard for you to not seeing the roads and cars. I think the traffic problem in Bangkok is not because of the road but it's all about the car, while in Bangkok is a very small city(1,568 square kilometers) but have the road 5,400-5,500 kilometers long which is way too much and could hold a number of a car on the road only about 1.2 millions cars, but now in bangkok there are about 9 millions++ cars on the roads. In my opinion this small city cannot hold these 9 millions+ car on the road, and I think none of the city in this world could hold these 9 millions car too. It's too much and these 9 millions car are only the car that registered in bangkok, there are a lot of cars in Bangkok that came from another province too. And I'm not even talking about the tourist's car that came to travel in Thailand(there are about 40 millions tourists per years in Thailand).

And that only in Urban areas in USA that consumes close to half of the land areas like Los angeles and Los angeles still have a problem about traffic jam. Now 10% of the land used for road and it's only for 1.2 millions cars used. While there are 9 millions plus cars on the roads in Bangkok that's mean bangkok have to used nearly 100% land for roads, and I think that's not a city anymore.

Those public canal invader houses is an issue among Thai people who did everything right such as pay their expensive rent not just take over public space and claim to be their own land, while the canal invaders got a very good treatment from the government - cheap loan houses located next the canal right next to where they used to live - it near all the facilities - such a convenient life, they may live in a bad looking houses but Im sure that they arent poor people, poor people are living in the countryside far away from work place and all the facilities. just go inside these slum houses they have fridge /big screen TV with satellite connection/some of them can even afford to put AC in the house, its look bad cause they knew that its not their property from the begining so they neglect to take care of it. Personally even I dont agree with the government of how they spent the tax payer money on these people but maybe it is the best solution there is cause to sue each of them in the court it may take forever nothing can be done at - least in the next 20 years but with this method it only take few yrs to clear up the canal probably worth paying though.

BTS and MRT are not what I would call poor quality. Buses, yeah.

The price of the decent mass transportation systems i.e. the “trains” is somewhat problematic. The statistics show that the average price per ride take up to something like 200% of the minimum hourly wage here in Thailand. Whereas in developed countries it is something far lower like 20-30% of minimum hourly wage. So many people still choose to suffer with the crappy buses. Be notified that I can’t really remember the exact percentage but it certainly is somewhere close to that.

What if it means you get to work quicker? might make some reconsider how they travel.

I own 4 cars but have given up driving to work long time ago. Now I mostly bike to work. Having bike commuted to work in the US, Europe, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan, I find that Bangkok is not that bad for cycling. It is safer, faster, and more convenient than some people think. But yes, unfortunately the majority of people who can afford a car would still want to drive their own car for the sake of “convenience” and “comfort”.

When you understand Thailand, it's culture, and bureaucracy , you will understand that this will NEVER happen.
