After 14 years as a 3D Artist, people ask me all the time what the best way to improve their 3D Art is. Practice makes perfect they say. But a break away from the computer helps you just as much. What you do when you are away from your desk helps you even more. That's where photography comes in. Photography literally changed my life as a 3D Artist. This will make you a better artist. Whether you are working in Unreal, Blender, 3DS Max, whatever, this WILL help you grow.

I just happened to be a freestyle photog while I was learning 3D art. If someone had shown me this video 20 years ago, I would’ve saved so much time on client critiques getting that right “look”. I am so happy, i started already as a child to photograph, at this time with real filmmaterial and make the paperpictures in a real Black and Withe Photo Room with chemiecal liquids and diffrent gradations papers for more or less contrast. All the stuff with depth of feeld, stops, shutter speed and focal length and composition with the golden proportion, i learned already as a child and teenager. Also i have draw and paint a lot and i made marionetts with wooden hands and heads sculpted with knifes for sculpting. This helps me a lot today.

I have been learning UE solely for making fine-art cinematics - and this is a brilliant point to drive home. I come from a film-making background and was relieved to see some familiar options and considerations made within UE re: cameras, lenses and other variables. For single frame renders, I've noticed lately how Adobe (for their 3D apps) have been calling it 'virtual photography'... maybe that's new, maybe it's not & just new to me, but it did make me shift my thinking to what 3D art is actually *doing* when you're using it for fine art or filmmaking, rather than games (no shade to games or game-art intended). Great tutorial - and great photos too!

I feel your passion. I was teaching animation, I had my trusty t3i , and was asked if I could teach photography (which I had dabbled into only a bit at that point). but I hadn't gotten very deep into the photography world at that point. Because I was asked to teach, I took the job and started learning about photography and started seeing the benefits in my 3d art as well. Highly recommend looking into photography to up your skill in all sorts of artsy areas!

@@WilliamFaucher right on! I went t3i route because of the swivel screen and mic input, and custom firmware options (I was just actually wanting a better video camera). I love my t3i, but it is a little dated, and am in no way married to the brand. I'd love to get a Sony a7x for the demon-like power it has to see in the dark with its crazy high iso capabilities.

great vid , fully agree. photographry has helped a huge amount... one thing i dont think you mentioned is kitbashing scenes and knowing what the camera/lens/settings will see when looking at a certain scene and how to trick/set exposure to get results you want with a given fov and not needed a full enviroment.. i recomend product photography and portrait because both involve controlling all aspects of the shot from posing to lighting ,both involve lots of post production or pre production to get the desired look.the only issue i have is i cant transfer alot of the shots due to aspect ratio... i can visualise 35mm,85mm framing on dslr no problem lol and the 200mm,2.8 cinematic headshot with 3 point lighting doesnt work great with wide aspect ratios..,,, am finding for cinematic the wider aspect ratio really changes things. iam now around 30mm aspect 2.35 which is what iam seeing in movies but wow it can be frustrating to get framings due to the width unless you have an enviroment.and yes iam trying the wide aspect ratio because all the tuts say it makes everything more cinematic ,,,only a few days in to my unreal engine journey.thanks for the videos

Well spoken. People often ask me why I am so good with framing, composition and creating nice contrast in all kinds of values. Starting to draw at the age of 6 and winning an photography competition with 12 probably has a lot to do with it. The funny thing is that I never learned the fundamentals consciously and theoretically. I just did it and got tons of experience. I can't always tell you why I am doing something, I just know that it is right since my instinct tells me so. This instinct comes from doing it countless times. I shot ten-thousands of images when I was a child, just for the fun of it. When I was 15 I could do better photos than my father who was an hobby photograph for 20 years by then. I get really in a bad mood when people wave it away by saying I am just talented as if this is some magic thing that people have (or not). No, I just started early and did the work for a long period of time - I am actually a slow learner and a lazy person, but I have the advantage of starting with an age where others where mostly playing games and nothing else. 10 years of drawing experience and 6 years of photography experience before even starting with 3D makes a HUGE difference.
@WilliamFaucher
@WilliamFaucher 2 жыл бұрын
100% agreed! An example I like to use is, every single 5 year-old sucks at drawing. The only difference is that some kinds stop drawing, and others keep going. That's what makes good artists. Time and hard work.

oh my, this is something I always tend to tell everybody in 3D. You just HAVE to grab a real camera as rendering is just simulating it in your computer. Finding angles, replicating breathing of autofocus, lens chose and it's imperfections, colorgrading, replicating movement of some famous shots just for fun is something that you won't get anywhere else. Also in portrait work there is the benefit of connection with the subject you just don't have in 3D, it just hits different.

And if for some of the many reasons you can't get into real-world photography - I can suggest trying "virtual photography" by using some of the many photomodes video games have nowadays. It might sound silly if you never had contact with it before but it's slowly becoming one of the bigger "digital" hobbies and during the 10y I've been messing with it has helped me a lot in learning about composition, lighting, colors, values, staging.

Composition, balance like object balance, contrast balance, color balance, the function of frame and other photo stuff is fine to know for nice renders and also for modeling. Sure technical stuff like aperture numbers, ev and other technical things are Just simple and base knowledge in photography. But its fine to have that options in UE

I use a Canon 5D Mark 2 with a fixed 50mm lens. It’s not a super expensive lens but it’s bright. Not having zoom forces you to move to get the right composition for the shot. It’s also super light and compact compared to a zoom lens.

@@WilliamFaucher Thanks. I knew I might have said it a little too extreme. You are right. It's not always the case, but quite often I see the correlation. As to graphic design, it provides mostly similar skills from photography. But you get more freedom to create and try different styles compared to photography where you mostly passively capture what's already there, and spice it up in post. I think graphic design helps artists develop focus on storytelling using graphic elements, not only fonts, but also color scheme, layout, balance and negative space and other things. Becoming a good 3d artist is hard. Trying to wear multiple hats and excelling at all of them is nearly impossible. But having some basic training and forcing yourself to observe and assess things from a photographer/graphic designer's angle might help. Thanks again for talking to me. Love to help brainstorm if needed. Thanks again for your great contribution all these years to the community.

I spent 18 years as a semi-professional photographer. Did everything from bikini girl calendars to baby photos to weddings to landscapes. But was never able to achieve the quality of work I was aiming for. Heck, I'm in-person friends with Renee Robyn who does exactly the type of photography I always strived for and even she was never able to put in to words what I needed to do to achieve my goals. Asking peers for advice and tips, no one could offer help on how to reach the next level of quality. So, I gave up the struggle and quit to go make video games. Haven't picked up my camera in almost 5 years. It can absolutely help enhance your composition skills, and various other bits of knowledge, but I don't think you can teach how to have a truly good artistic eye. Some people will always be miles ahead. And gear only matters when you have a very specific need. For general purpose, your phone is fine. Just put it to Manual mode!
@WilliamFaucher
@WilliamFaucher 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, there's always someone better! I'm convinced though that what you've learned shooting for 18-years is immediately applicable to your 3D Work. Now I don't know what kind of 3D work you do, if you're just designing games or more on the art side of things, but photography will absolutely help you if it's the latter. Will someone else be miles ahead? Sure. Always. Am I myself the best out there? Hell no. Not even close. You can make up for it with passion and love for a craft though :)

@@WilliamFaucher I'm mostly trying to makes games from an artist side of things (doubt I'll ever wrap my head around coding). And I'm thinking my photography experience, while helpful in many ways, is also holding me back somewhat because I'm really struggling to get things to look the way I want. It's easy with raytracing, but fighting with these non ray-tracing lighting methods is a serious struggle. I've been wondering for a few weeks now, should I even bother avoiding raytracing? Should I worry about the people who don't have an RTX card yet? Would my life be easier if I just jumped right into full raytracing for my work?

@@WilliamFaucher For anyone interested, the G9 is currently going for just under $1000 on Amazon. However, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 body only is $425 on Amazon, which is what my husband ordered for me (he has many years of photography experience and is knowledgeable about camera gear). We didn't get the one with the kit lens because he said the kit lenses are never any good, and it's much better to get a prime lens and go from there. So we got the Lumix G 25mm F1.7, which he says is the "nifty fifty" (50mm equivalent, for noobs like me), and later we'll probably get the Lumix 14mm f2.5 II for wide-angle shots (28mm equivalent, for noobs). There is conflicting information saying the 14mm lens has been discontinued by Panasonic, but B&H and Amazon both still show it as available.

love this, i do want to point out that as a 3D artist you are not trying to mimic reality, it looks weird on screen, instead capture reality as a camera does, thus the term photorealism, our eyes are use to how cameras display the world, how hollywood portays physics, why you expect explosions to be bigger than what they are, to achieve the "realist feel" you have to actually not go with what is real, and instead go with what is presumed to be real. this is the reason why motion blur can look soooo goood, same with god rays

In my project after restarting UE some of models not reflecting light at all, even after rebuilding light and changing lightmaps they still completely black. If I trying to replace material by another one its helps and model looks normal. Any solution for this kind of problem? Maybe some shaders broken or something?

Hi William, first off congrats on the awesome growth of your channel! I'm trying to help a friend with something Unreal-related and thought you'd be the right person to ask. He's a 3D artist who does a lot of realtime archviz in UE, and he recently got feedback from a job application that while his visual output is amazing, he needs to level up on those more technical, UE-specific points such as light baking, draw calls and so on. That stuff is not typically found in most mainstream Unreal Engine courses, so other than the official docs would you know where I could tell him to look for courses at that advanced level he's at? I'd appreciate any pointers, thank you and enjoy your weekend! 🕺
@WilliamFaucher
@WilliamFaucher 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks so much! First off, it's weird that the job is asking for knowledge on lightbaking and draw-calls, since UE5 solves both of those issues. My guess is UE5 is going to completely eliminate the need for light baking the moment Lumen gets really fleshed out, but I could be wrong. Secondly, with Nanite, this solves the issue of draw-calls since the entire nanite geo pass is done in a single draw call. I'd recomment taking a look at Unreal Online Learning (UOL) for more technical courses, they're very good!
@DodaGarcia
@DodaGarcia 2 жыл бұрын
@@WilliamFaucher At the time they justified it with UE5 not yet being production ready, which of course is changing now with the preview being out. But he’s still on the lookout for more advance UE learning resources so I’ll definitely tell him to check out UOL, thank you so much for the response!!
