That's the saddest part of the whole thing....here they've got this lovely old dreamer of a grandpa with the heart of a poet and just have to destroy his dream. Being poor is made much worse if you stop dreaming and seeing all the lovely natural things all around.

My dad was an engineer for C&O/CSX, he used to blow the whistle coming through Cliftondale Park where we lived, so Mom would know to come pick him up at the Yard Office. We used to hear bobwhites and whippoorwills every evening. Our little town had one of the biggest locomotive roundtables in the world when it was a bustling RR town. My favorite picture is one of him and me in the engine on C&O Family Day. I got to ride in the engine from CF to Charlottesville on my way to NYC while going to graduate school because my dad’s cousin had that “run”. (You “run” a train, instead of “driving”.)

Words cannot express how much I loved my grandpa. My father was cold and distant, but my mother's father was warm and always had a smile and jokes for us grandkids. Miss him so much. I always treasured the days we would sit on the porch and listen to bluegrass music on his little transistor radio. Good times!💕

Nowadays, if your grandpa had a stroke, he will be rushed off to the hospital in an ambulance with sirens blaring. They'd put him into the ICU and hook him up to a ventilator. There'd be tubes and lines stuck all over him and he'll never get a moment's rest or get a chance to say goodbye to his loved ones. But back in those days, they just let them die in peace at home , among their families.

You do make that clear. Understand. He had a great charm, and truly seemed dedicated and sincere about what he was doing with this show. He left an indelible impression, and left us we a great and memorable show. In years since, the "paranormal" is being given a lot more credence by physicists and the more open-minded scientists and theorists (see Rupert Sheldrake, Michael Talbot's book THE HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE, to begin with in this area). We are working on an extensive article looking into the career of John Newland, including his later work as a director of tv films, such as the classic DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK. He is unfairly overlooked as a creative force on tv/and as an on-screen presence of notable impact. (He was also a great voice on radio, as witness several CBS RADIO MYSTERY THEATER episodes he "appeared" on.)

That women is Anna Karen. She played on Star Trek in All Our Yesterdays. She's the one that screamed and Kirk ran thru the time portal to save her. Kirk saved her but she turned on him and later called Kirk a witch, blaming Kirk for her stealing that purse and later saying 'they'll burn ya' to kirk.

You are correct. Edgar Stehli played Professor Sam Kittridge as a foil to Kevin McCarthy's Professor Walter Jameson in another typically dark and invariably well written Charles Beaumont episode of The Twilight Zone titled "Long Live Walter Jameson" (1960).

My Mom use to watch One Step Beyond when I was a child, my sibling’s, and I had to watch it being that there was only one tv in the house, and it was in my parents bedroom, I liked watching it, the episodes were very interesting, even though I didn’t understand them like I do now that I’m a adult, this episode is very touching, it brought tears to my eyes.
