As a Army Infantry Veteran, I identified closely with the Soldier and the bond with his dog. I was never in front of a firing squad, but my dog saved my life just the same by his love, affection and loyalty. PTSD, anxiety, anger and depression can be greatly diminished by man's best friend.

My 12-year-old German Shepherd takes just a few seconds to determine whether a person is worth having around the family or should be "persuaded" (by bark or bite, whatever seems necessary) to leave ASAP. Bacall for me too. Very hard. My sweet furbaby Spikey died at 13 and my heart is still broken..I miss him with everything in me. Nobody has ever loved me more purely, deeply and unconditionally as he had. He didn’t want to leave me but his poor cancer ridden body just gave up. I would have given anything for just another week with my sweet boy. I have loved few ppl in my life, but none as much and as deep as i loved my Spikey. Only a true dog lover can understand this kind of love. I held him as he passed away and whispered in his ear, “mommy loves you, you’re a good boy and will live in my heart forever”. And he is. Loved and never forgotten. One day I believe we will be reunited. That would be Heaven to me.

She thanked her mother on the way out, saying that she would have been late if she hadn't come in and woken her up. Her mother said "I never woke you up!"and then when my mother insisted she had, my grandmother said "describe the woman" and when Mom did, she found out it was her dead grandmother that she'd never met! I've always loved that story

This one's interesting in that it appears to take place in Missouri. The young man mentions "Carthage" (county seat of Jasper County) and the (horrible) battle of Wilson's Creek (in southwest Greene County, two counties away). I think the colonel also says something about Fayetteville (which would be in Arkansas four counties south of Jasper County). It's nice in that the hilly countryside looks very much like the Ozarks mountains there. Very powerful episode.
