Finally,....! A well thought out approach. I went back and forth on this and did the same thing...calculated my height, average climbing height 20-22' at foot level and tree circumference. I have been using a 35' piece, because I do sometimes want the flexibility of hunting a tad bit higher. Great video and well explained.

In Missouri there is huge hills where the edge of the bed, 20 ft your 10 ft above deer eye level.

Very good explanation. I started with 30' last year and it's worked well for me. When you're feet are actually at 20' on your platform (not a guestimate) only then can you say what will work for you. Shot angle and "personal height comfort" are also considerations. Good job!

Again, I enjoy your thorough presentations. I wish you would try out SRT (single rope technique) and provide your comments on that. You probably have all the gear - except maybe a throw ball, hand ascender a pulley and a foot sling. Set aside the one stick for a bit in the off season and try out just climbing the rope. One could argue a safer, simpler and easier method.

About the scaffold knot, I have tried to tie it incorrectly. And I still can't figure out how that is possible. If you use the tag end to do your wraps and feed the tag and through the wraps, it seems impossible to tie it incorrectly. Am I incorrect about this?

So funny, I was just searching for this on saddle forums! Thank you for the video. I've order 40' of canyon C IV but it hasn't arrived yet and idk if it ever will. Out of stock everywhere else unless you want 100'. I have a muddy safety line, 10mm that I have never used and was thinking about using that until I get something better. It's only 30' though but I only hunt 18-20'. So I'm pretty sure that will do. Thanks again!

You can definitely use a 10mm rope, but it's going to be a pain in the butt to pack, even at only 30'. The canyon C-IV packs away in a much smaller bundle and is easier to deal with in a mobile hunting set up. Eastern Woods Outdoors had the canyon in stock recently, not sure if they still do. If by chance you ordered rope from Sound Boat Works, just cancel you order. It ain't ever coming. Trust me.

Great video. I started out with carrying 40' of rope. I recently just bought new ropes to cut down on weight and decided to go with only 30'. I also tested a method that would still allow me to go way higher if I wanted it just takes a bit of time but you come down and reset at a lower height then repel down the rest of the way. Its not ideal but it makes me more comfortable to know I can if that need arises. Most of the trees I climb here are oaks so being able to go over 25' doesnt happen often and the pines that I can climb that high start out way bigger diameter then I want to climb.

@@platinumpursuitoutdoors All you do is drop down and set your platform lower down. then use your lineman's rope to secure yourself while you retrieve your rappel rope like if you were on the ground. Then set the rappel rope at the lower elevation rappel down from that point. Its kind of like your normal move with one stick but going down. I tried it one day while practicing and only used a 10' tether and climbed 18' up. Wanted to see if it would work and how complicated it would be.

For those worried about outclimbing your rope, don't drop your stick to the ground when descending. You can "outclimb" your rope but then descend as far as possible, then remount your stick/aiders and use them to get the rest of the way down or get back on your stick,put your lineman belt on and the pull down your rappel rope, re-rig it and the rappel the rest of the way down. IN SHORT: Don't toss your stick and have a linesman belt. You'll be fine if things get a little sideways.

Why do you use the triangular quick link vs. the oval? I have several oval shaped, but no triangular, should I switch to this for my hitch? What is the advantage? Also, thank you for the explanation, saving 6 feet of rope you are never going to use sounds like a no brainer. I don't think it would apply to me as I use a roll up pouch and only drop the rope on the decent anyway.

I got the triangle one because that was what was available when I got it. I do have an oval one also, but I think I like the triangle one better because I feel like it releases from the tree a little bit easier.

Is scaffold knot essential? I have always used figure 8 is that not good enough

I have heard of people using the figure 8, But it does not hold the Delta link as securely and nice as the scaffold not.

Ok so… you need to look into a lineman’s rope and a tree tether. Depending on how high you hunt depends on how much rope you need. Let me know if I can help anymore.

This is great. I initially went with 40' of Sterling C-IV Canyon rope to begin with. For me I am also around 18-22' hunting height and being 5'9", 40' of rope was just way too much. A couple of days ago I ordered 30' of the Canyon Elite and am looking forward to seeing how that will work out. I am also going to mark off 1' marks at the end just for a visual. Your videos are great and i feel they address questions that aren't normally discussed in many of the other popular watched videos. Thanks.

I definitely think this is a thing that guys that make one-sticking content don't talk about and they should. I hunt Eastern Pa and I'm fully satisfied at 18' to my feet, I realistically don't see a need to hunt any higher. With that being said, for me personally, the 4' of rope you're going to be cutting off is negligible and I would just leave it on. The only thing I think where that 4' could be useful is if you are hunting on a slope and your tree is leaning down the slope a little, If you're rappelling down and you happen to fall to the low side of the tree, you could be utilizing that to rappel down the slope. Is it realistic that you're going to need that 4'? Who's to say, but like I said, for me its negligible and Id rather have it and not need it, then not have it. Party on, Wayne.

Did you ever end up putting a carabiner on the end of your rappel rope to haul your pack up? I am considering that modification myself, but need to see how much effort it is to wind the rope back up once my pack is on my gear tether. I have just been wearing my pack up when climbing with sticks and using paracord to haul my bow up once I am situated. Thanks for the videos, and stay safe out there!

I hunt 30-40' with my rifle in my climbing stand. It is amazing how much more you see at that height. With my saddle I have 4, 30" sticks with aiders. My platform ends up 21 - 25'. I am looking to cut more weight so I am strongly considering one sticking. If I like it I may end up with a JX3 for rifle hunting and getting 40' up using SRT or One sticking.

One must like blood trailing for days if they hunt 30 feet high or more. Your chance for a fast, ethical kill shot decreases the higher you go. I like to keep it under 20 feet, and for my deer to fall over dead within 100 yards, which is a challenge in and of itself. I want to be packing out the meat that day/night, not the next day or next morning.

Meh…6ft is like 2oz of rope. If you leave that 6ft on, after a couple of years when the rope starts to get worn on the end you can cut that 6ft off and have a nice rope that’s still long enough.

I think I rather SRT 1st before 1 stick. Coming from a multiple stick guy and sure many watching this.. Think about it you have all the rappel gear for it. Why bring any sticks. Remember when DRT thing was promoted all over KZbin and the forums. Now look how dead it got. Same goes for the 1 sticking that's why I never really liked it. Back when I saw diysportsman do it I was like I gotta try this. Did this with muddy stick like everyone else. Now it's just like meh

I get it… Problem is some of the trees I hunt don’t have any reachable limbs. Or the limbs that they have are 30+ feet. So you limit yourself in that method of climbing. I think one sticking will stay around. I think the percentage of times that I will use it verses using my sticks will vary as well. I think the DIY Sportsman said he uses 80% sticks and 20% one sticking. It just varies.
