As a utility lineman, I commend your use of the linesman belt as you work up the tree. Always maintain 3 point of contact, belt counts for 2 which is what allows for the use of your arms to keep moving the top line. Your method looks EXTREMELY safe, which should be the #1 consideration, especially since you have no one to rescue you in the event of an accident. Great video!

One HUGE issue with slack in the system is the use of static ropes for tethering. If you fall with the tether at ankles, your problem isn't hitting the ground, it's having your back break when the rope catches.

Started with XOP mini sticks with an artisan outdoors platform on my top stick last year. Discovered one sticking after those purchases and ended up purchasing the ultimate one stick from EWO. It is very expensive but I love the fact that I can get to any height I need to go and can go up a tree with limbs in a breeze. Was budget friendly before I found out about one sticking LOL.

im a two stick fan with diy aiders, i can do about fifteen feet depending on the grade of the ground, then i set my ring of steps two more feet up most of the time that's all i need. if i need to get up just a bit more i just steal from the rings steps and use a basic cam strap. i can fit everything in/on a mountain smith fanny pack that then mounts using the waist belt to the tree. one sticking is fine and i can tell youve thought about and used that set up quite a bit. i just use a little less effort with the two sticks and i try and sweat and breath as little as possible during assent. one nice thing about one sticking is if you leave your setup in the tree you can jumar back up to it if you need to leave with the intention of returning. keep having fun dangling.

One of the safer one stick videos I’ve seen. As a rope access tech, seeing someone use the extra attachment point is great. Still not thrilled with some of the devices, and ropes people use since they are not actually made for rappelling. And very few back up their devices once they are set. @@TheBudgetSportsman a few different options. I always prefer to see someone use an actual descender. They are made to hold you so you can work hands free while on rope and made to better standards. As far as backing them up; on what most people are using they a simple prusik above the device. All prusiks need to be smaller diameter than that of the main line to hold reliably. If they are put below the device it could possibly push it, or cut it if the device breaks.

I'm going to try one sticking, because well I backed over my sticks leaving the parking lot and bent one like a Lowe's 2x4. I'll probably mod one of the remaining hawks for a dedicated one stick in the future. But I have a set of muddy pros coming to replace them. Seemed like the best option since I didn't want to have to mod them straight away as I still have instances where I require a full stick set up.plus I've always wanted the muddy pro's.

Good Job. After watching your CGM saddle review , Mrs. Clause put one under the tree for me. All summer long I've been practicing climbing with two hang on sticks with homemade rope aiders. After gaining confidence and getting comfortable shooting in all directions and being perfectly content with my improvements, I've been anticipating and dreaming of the upcoming archery season, enter this video. I was like Ok what's the big deal, one stick two stick, then wham ! the descent, the rush of repelling in my younger days came rushing back. Now it's time to rethink my gear for the season. Even if I now qualify for AARP benefits, the thrill of descending makes the long unproductive sit, after one sticking up the tree, sound enticing. God Bless y'all and keep poyntem to Christ

Eastern Woods Outdoors one-stick with Cruzr XC and Safeguard lol. Can’t beat that combo (any saddle will work)…. Get up a tree so fast and so quietly… my saddle (with filled pouches) and one stick are 9.6lbs together. I’m new to all of this and it feels WAAAAAY safer than the 4 Hawk Heliums and Predator. Little bit more expensive? Yes… but the space saved on storage, the ease of walking into the woods with a slim saddle and a tiny stick is pretty amazing. I also feel safer when climbing when one sticking… was getting too many kick outs on sticks and snags with line man.

@the budget sportsman I am not concerned about the weight, what I am looking for is the time efficiency of it all. Do you feel that there is a time saving measure with either sticks or 1 sticking? Seems like going up would take a bit longer with 1 stick but definitely quicker after.
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman Жыл бұрын
I personally am way faster going up with multiple sticks but I have also spent more time using that system. Guys who are good at one sticking say they can be just as fast. There is no question that rappelling down is the fastest way down the tree and also no question that packing up one stick takes less time than 3 or 4 sticks. One sticking has the advantage of also being able to get higher than 3 or 4 sticks may be able to get, but lately I find myself hunting lower and trying to find good cover.

Great job on the video I would give you grade of A+ . I think weight factor is not a huge difference but the mobility is. The ability to carry less climbing stick is huge in my opinion. You don't have worry about making noise and 1 mini climbing stick packs better. I have a mini beast stick 1.5 lbs. I also a framed backpack which also makes big difference being mobile. I pack ghillie suit incase I setup on the fly. I am 50yrs and I highly recommend one stick climbing methods for older hunters. Just wondering if you back up your safeguard? I have a gri gri+ which is pretty much the same thing. Just got it during the off season. I know some people say that you should back a safeguard or the greedy plus up with the prusik when you're at hunting height. I'm not sure it's much of a mechanical device as more it is like a lever which pinches the rope to stop it.

When you get into saddle hunting you quickly realize it is all about weight and bulk. You have to find what level of weight and bulk you are willing to live with, for me, I am willing to pay to get lighter. That is your tradeoff really. Getting into one sticking now, it is all about ditching some sticks to reduce the amount of stuff I have to carry in and also get higher. Right now, to get to the height I like to hunt, I need to carry 4 sticks and each stick weighs over 2lbs (Very old muddy pro's). I like to carry now 1 stick + 1 platform, that has saved some cost for me as I already had that and cuts about 6lbs, but more importantly it cuts down on the bulk. This also means less to pack up on the way out. The other thing is what you mentioned about safety on the way down, repelling feels a lot safer and faster. One thing I would say about the ultimaider is, you could consider just reducing it to one aider step. This means more moves, but I would sacrifice speed for safety and less bulk any day personally. Same thing goes with the lineman belt, just put it on from the ground. Yes, falling from 7 feet doesn't seem like a big deal, but fall on your back or onto a rock or stick and it is. Maybe I have to get to my tree 10m earlier, that isn't such a big deal when you think about it. Take your time, backup all your safety mechanisms.

Personally I would go with the cam cleat. The USA will be fine for setting the stick but in my opinion it will be harder to remove for your transition…at least if you want to maximize the height for each move. The cam cleat can be released with only the tag end of the rope, mean you don’t actually have to reach all the way down to the attachment point.

I use a two step aider so I can spend more time on a stick step, which makes it easy to advance my tether often. I never have more than 2 ft of slack, and my rope (Canyon Elite) is rated for 3x the shock load from that fall. Fewer steps on the aider also means less overall movement while climbing which is the main negative I see to this method. That said, I'm currently using the 1s method for saddle and hang-on hunting.

I one sticked all last season and was miserable. I found it extremely noisy despite trying not to be and very fiddly. This is after practicing a lot with it. The worst was when the rappel rope got stuck on aggressive angle branches as I was trying to pull it down. Happened more than once. And forget trying to climb trees that have a lean. It’s an interesting method but I find carrying an extra few pounds of sticks into the woods a worthy investment. Like you mentioned, there’s not much of a weight difference. I did enjoy your vid, but you need to mention the serious downsides besides the cost and things to avoid.

I tend to agree with you. I definitely prefer carrying sticks. I just find it faster and smoother for me, but it seems to really work for some people. I’m sorry you found the video incomplete. While there are some downsides, the loudness was not an issue that I found to be a problem and I rarely had problems getting my rope out of the tree and I rappel no matter my climbing method. This video is certainly not the comprehensive video on everything there is to know about one sticking. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Respectfully, I don’t agree with you that one sticking is necessarily expensive. I use a regular ole 20” Hawk Helium with the stock cam straps and versa button. Granted I’ve sanded down and smoothed out my versa button some to make the on/off a little easier. But as long as it’s a tree without branches, I come down by just loosening the cam strap and sliding the stick down. Not faster, but not hard either. Obviously, you gotta tie that stick to you so it don’t slide too far down! Been doing this a couple years now.
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman Жыл бұрын
ok you may be correct, but you are doing it in a way that 95% of people (or more) will not want to do it. Using a versa button and also one sticking back down is not the popular way to do it. Personally, I would NEVER one stick without the ability to rappel down...and that is where the cost starts to add up. I'm glad you found a budget way that works for you.

I don't see that rappelling has to be that expensive. I use a black diamond ATC, combined with 2 extra carabiners and an accessory cord for making an auto block. Affordable, safer than a purely mechanical system, and easier on my rope.

@@wendyandwalter40yep I sold my madrock and bought a Mammut 2.0 with carabiner combo for half of what I sold the madrock for. 40ft of canton elite rope, auto block, and Tethrd locker.

I would argue that you can buy the lbs saving if you want to. Same with multi-sticks. A TethrdOne with amsteel aiders and 40ft of Oplux combined is 2 lbs. Also onestickers are not advocating to onestick WITHOUT a lineman's belt at all!
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman Жыл бұрын
Sure you can buy the weight savings. The point was most folks forget to calculate the extra weight of rope and only consider the climbing method/platform weight. I have seen MANY videos of own stickers climbing without a lineman’s belt and not managing their tether slack while they climb.

Dont worry about getting the best climbing rope for hunting. Watch trad climbing falls. Im guessing the cheapest 8mm climbing rope is never gonna be stressed more than 5% of its strength. If you fall while saddle hunting.
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman Жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Not sure that’s a chance I’m willing to take. There are a lot of factors to a good rope. Breaking strength is certainly one, but so is abrasion resistance among other things. When my life is on the line, I think I’ll save up and buy quality rope.

Not gonna lie, the slack when stepping up scares the shit out of me every time I climb. I might have to start using my lineman's like you are here.

It’s a pain, but it do feel like it adds an extra level of safety. Honestly I find myself using multiple sticks most often. For the marginal weight savings, I am faster up the tree with sticks and I feel safer.

1 year update. I ended up losing close to 50lbs and bought a EWO one-stick one stick and used it for the first time on a bow hunt last weekend. Best decision ive made@@TheBudgetSportsman

A slack fall will cut or de-sheath the rope with just about all mechanical devices. The shock load won't be a factor. You hitting the ground will be. The smaller the diameter of the rope, the more likely it will cut. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed doing this method. A 20" fall is all it takes to cut or de-sheath the rope. Dynamic rope should be used for this method as well.

2TC has none of the deficiencies of stick climbing,. It's cheaper. safer, lighter, quieter, and is a far safer way to descend than rappelling. I can not only descend with one hand, but I can also climb using one hand/ arm, and one foot/ leg. No other method is as capable for mobile elevated hunting.

People spend so much money to get lighter weight gear, saving a pound or two here and there for 100’s of dollars. Dudes, just skip your lunch everyday for a few weeks and you’ll have 5-10lbs less to carry through the woods and up a tree AND you’ll save money since you’re eating less meals.

I’m not one to comment on other peoples weight, but you do have a point. I myself have actually lost 13 lbs this summer and it didn’t cost me a penny. The only way I could cut 13 lbs from my setup is to hunt from the ground.

BG, I'm a 51yo fat fuzzy hippie redneck. I wasn't even hipster when it was hip to be hipster. I will say that while there is a serious problem in the industry, and especially on KZbin, with influencers, over hyped gear, and inflated costs, saddle hunting can be an effective, affordable system that adds a lot of maneuverability for hunters that used to depend on stagnant hunting systems like box blinds and tree stands. But you gotta love tweaking your own systems in order to get there. I got tired of staring at the same old corn pile every year.
