Good Video, some nice tips included to help beginners and advanced one stickers. One comment for your consideration and others watching is to not intentionally drop equipment you trust your life to (in this case your stick, but I've seen others drop stands and platforns) from height, which can cause stress or damage that can jeopardize your safety during future use. Always lower to the ground or attach to your saddle before repelling down. I use a Muddy stick as well and I attach it to my bridge using the rope and cleat when descending from the tree at the end of a hunt. Stay Safe and Good Hunting 👍

Good tip! I have purposely dropped my stick before and practiced switching over from my tether to my rappel set up while hanging in the tree. It's not super fun but very doable. I use that as my "backup" rather than attaching a cord to my stick.

Nicely done video on one stick with rappel. Im sure some will have their own details they like better or feel they need for their own situation. BUT I think you covered the basics of the stick, the lineman and the rappel in a format that was well filmed. There is a ton of info for folks wanting to dive into the details on the web. Nice work adding to the info on the technique.

@@TheSouthernObsession Were you addressing me as the "ghost rider"? Because if you were talking to me and saying I was wrong, I assure you I am not. Now connecting isn't any faster, but the disconnect is FASTER, and QUIETER, and you get BIGGER MOVES. It just comes off when pulled up, which can be done with a longer pull cord without squatting, lowering yourself, or turning upside down. Anyone who tries it will see as a fact. Or see's it done and as a working brain. No offence. Facts TRUMP feelings. 😀
@TheSouthernObsession14 күн бұрын
@LIFEONTHELINE-xn8gs I'm pretty sure my comment was directly replying to yours. I tried watching your video on it but can't see much at all in the video, might want to try filming it with something better than a potato lol. I'm sure anyone with a brain also can see how much safer climbing is with a cam cleat over "a hook and daisy chain". You said it yourself "just comes off when pulled up", that's not good at all, if one of your feet gets caught on the stick or anything causes that stick to be picked up your stick is falling off the tree. As you saw in this video you also don't have to squat or lower anything you can pick the stick up towards you and disconnect the rope from the cam cleat so not seeing BIGGER MOVES. I don't recall hearing his cam cleat one time in the video and that's pretty impressive considering he is doing this with a muddy stick that has one of the cheapest cam cleat options out there.😁
@LIFEONTHELINE-xn8gs14 күн бұрын
@@TheSouthernObsession I'm filming with what I have. Yes, my whole point is how easy it goes on and comes OFF. But you do know how gravity works right. I also do not depend on what feet are on when climbing, (this is biggest reason for my channel and the videos). I defiantly get bigger moves. He (and anyone else using a cam cleat) has to set up low enough to reach the cleat. If you watch my first video, you will see I marked the tree and I can get (over) 7ft. per move, just the same as the first move from the ground. Without having to climb over the stick with all that slack. Can you not see this is dangerous. Most do but do it anyway. Look I'm not trying to put this guy or anyone down at all. I'm just trying to share something I discovered that is a better and safer way to do it. I will just say this-try before you deny.

You should be taking the slack out of your tether with every step as you ascend. If that stick kicks out when you're standing on the top of it with 3-4' of slack you're going to snap your body in half. You have a ropeman ascender, why not use it to capture progress as you climb? When I one stick I never have more than 6-9" of tether slack when my linesman rope isn't in use.
@bpwhitetails3 жыл бұрын
I agree, that would be the safest way to adjust your tether. I do it that way to save time and i'm comfortable with it. But I don't recommend anyone do something they don't feel is safe.

At around 19:10 in your video you said that we don't want to clip our pull-down rope to our rappel rope carabiner, we want to clip the pull-down rope behind the knot of the rappel rope carabiner. Why? What is the negative of clipping your pulldown rope to the rappel rope carabiner? (I have been clipping my pulldown rope to my rappel rope quicklink and it has been working so far and I want to know what I should watch out for.)
@bpwhitetails2 жыл бұрын
I got that tip from another guy on youtube. I believe the reasoning behind it is that by clipping behind the carabiner you can pull slack rope out with less resistance than when pulling directly from the carabiner. I've never tried pulling from the carabiner personally so i'm not sure just how much harder it would be. Worth testing though!

I like your setup, very minimalist but effective. Good video, clearly explained. The only thing I would reconsider is the carabiners are side loaded when used as an anchor for your rappel line. A steel carabiner would help, a delta link may be better.

I've now watched a few of these "hunter teaches you how to climb a tree" videos. In all of them it is obvious that the "instructor" is not super knowledgeable or familiar with climbing in general. This video is completely adequate in my opinion, not many mistakes. One thing I would add is in your coiling techniques. With your rapel line and your paracord you should keep coiling techniques the same. The figure 8 on the hand is a top notch technique for small line, when you move to slightly larger or longer lines you can do the same thing over your hand and elbow in figure 8 pattern. For even bigger ropes you can do this over your head along your shoulders full arm span.

I don't understand why you use your rappel rope as a lineman and have a separate line for a tether. Why not use your rappel rope as a tether and have a separate lineman rope. Also, what kind of bag is that you use to stuff your rappel rope into. Looks like it fits pretty easily.
@bpwhitetails2 жыл бұрын

Man, I really want to use something like a biner instead of a damn quick link. I am so tired of screwing and unscrewing that gate. Anyone know of one that isn't in danger of busting doing this? Also, I must be weird because i am right hand dominant, but I prefer to make moves with my left hand. Really liked the video, one of the bests on one stick climbing.
@bpwhitetails Жыл бұрын
I am not a safety expert on climbing and this is not official safety advice: but the quick link has worked well for me for the last few years. Two things that I do to minimize side loading. One is the carabiner needs to be shaped similar to the one I use so that the rope can’t slide around when you double wrap. This is a 5620 lb rated carabiner. The second is that I always wrap my carabiner the same way each time. The rope will bind on its self once body weight is applied keeping your tether from sliding down the tree. It should also put pressure in the same area on the carabiner as if you weren’t to double wrap it. I personally only trust my life with knots I tie and set ups I have created, but I also test everything and always check for any slightest sign of malfunction. I also think it’s wise to replace carabiners used under heavy loads every few years and replace rappel rope and re-tie knots every 5 or so. Good luck this season!

I was going to use a carabiner as well, so I’m guessing you haven’t fell yet? I know alot of people say the side loading and what not of a carabiner, but they’re rated to 30Kn. Idk about you but that’s a lot. I’ve never been afraid using a carabiner and it’s so much faster
@bpwhitetails3 жыл бұрын
While i recommend everyone take their own safety very seriously, I have never had an issue with my carabiner bending at all. I have used it on my tether for 3 seasons now with hardly any sign of wear. I double wrap my rope in a way that doesn't side load it much. If you feel unsafe using a quick-link carabiner or something similar over long periods of time, id just replace it every few years or so.
@michaelpennell6344 Жыл бұрын

What do you wrap your carabiners, belay device, and ropeman with? I’ve tried several different tapes and even heat shrink tubing but have yet to find anything that last more than three or four hunts. Awesome video, been one sticking for a year now and the newest gear adjustment I’ve made has been a wire pull up handle that stores inside of the stick when not in use from ewo. Using that I barely have to maneuver at all to reach down and grab my stick. Game changer as far as effort, noise, and movement

Help me understand this logic when it’s literally your life that’s on the line. Carabiner side loading failures are a known thing. Waiting until you notice something could mean you notice and decide to make your change as you’re falling to the ground. Little too late at that point. Use a quick link and stay safe out there. I will address this. 2 things. No. 1, coming from a climber, it is quite a bit bulkier and you carry more weight with all your gear walking into the woods. @@codybabb147 to me it's just as easy I don't mind putting a climber on my back. Where I hunt you better be in shape or at least some kind of decent shape or you're going to end up hunting on the side of the road hoping to catch a glimpse of one crossing to shoot at. It's no harder hunting with a climber tree stand especially the ones they make nowadays aluminum than it is carrying a saddle strapping them pegs on the tree going up and down. And yes I climb for a living so it would be much easier to just wear a pair of light aluminum pole spikes and it belt in a buck strap in the woods. Either way each to their own I ain't putting down anybody for doing either one I just made the statement to me it would be easier to wear spikes and belt I mean I'm in Florida you cannot hurt a cabbage Palm by climbing it with spikes that's a fact and most of the trees that you are in are going to be palm trees.
