genuinely believe it was primarily the amount of love, attention, and enrichment that Perry gave the cats that led to so many of them living as long. having so many novel ways to engage with their environment and a rich little social circle on top of frequent vet check-ins is far better than what even the best pet owners can usually provide

I've heard you can just pay the guinness world records to make a new record for you. If you google it, most of the nitpicking and auditing of records were done by others trying to prove their record was the "true record", not the company actually enforcing much beyond having some kind of "proof" even though they don't seem to do a ton of research to actually check it's valid. Also it's not like the guinness world records company works for free... They aren't out there investigating every possible record break--they are hired to appear and reward the record. There's a lot of records done as publicity for companies for a reason. Hell, their website has a whole section about "record breaking for businesses and brands" which really sounds kind of scummy to me, personally.

There was this weird period in the 20th century where maybe psychology was advanced enough to say "look at all these complex processes human psyche does, we might be unique" but not enough so that we could see animals are just as complex, but at the end of the day people for some reason neglected pets emotional needs. Animals "say their goodbyes" in nature, they mourn and in many species visit the death sites of their friends and family. So yeah, I love that he gave his animals a chance not to be confused by their family member's disappearance and to reconcile with the loss instead.

Its likely that the vet may have done at least the checkups for free, possibly even heavily discounting any other care, as I honestly can't think of a better form of word of mouth advertising than being the 32 year-old cat's vet. My fav memory was getting lost in the back country hiking 20 miles the wrong way with her. She followed me every step❤ The vets say she should be resting and dying. Yea if you want your dog to die. @@iMajoraGamingmy theory is that they're engagement/subscriber farming bots that will then be sold and turned into different channels one thing they do is make a weird generic comment like 'didnt ask', then if that reply chain gets a comment from a real user that gets a lot of likes, the bot account will edit their own comment to the same text as the real comment. because it was posted 'first', more people see that comment first and assume it's the real one so they like it and maybe subscribe to the channel (idk) That's just my theory on their end goal though. Sometimes they just seem to post hate comments. I'm not sure what benefit there is to getting angry replies in other peoples' comment sections.

I mean, there are his long stays like Creampuff and Grandpa, but he did describe many as cats he rehabilitated and then let others adopt. When I was working at an Animal Humane Society, it was not uncommon for us to have 100 different cats in total over the span of 3 weeks, all getting care and adopted out (or in the case of mothers, giving birth to kittens and then going on an adoption stay as those kittens grew up) so over the course of 30 years; if you acknowledge that many of these cats are staying for a few days to a few years (from being rescued from a kill shelter and immediately given to a friend, to going through leg rehabilitation, or a sick cat at the end of life) the 400 number is a lot more reasonable. Plus, he had great grand children. that’s a lot of kids over time to play with them and give them enrichment, even if Perry was the only one giving food and meds.

so true. my magical little critter, who is an oriental shorthair mixed with… something? came from a really bad hoarding situation. seeing the shape he was in when I adopted him, and hearing about how he lived with forty other cats in one house, totally shattered my cute lil childhood dreams of having dozens of cats and leaning into the crazy cat person thing. it’s so horrific what animals in hoarding situations go through :( I think they all assume they’re just like the amazing gentleman in this video; but he’s a rare exception to the rule. I hope my (no doubt extremely inbred) boy has a long life like grandpa.

Though it isn't the norm, there are definitely cases like this where someone's responsibly caring for a huge village of cats. I know a family who has about 30, the mom is a vet who works closely with shelters, and all of them are exceptionally well cared for. I think one of the factors that keeps it manageable is that she almost never takes home kittens, it's mostly older cats who've been in the system for a while, so they're always spayed/neutered/vaccinated/dewormed before they come through the door.

Hed walk around once and walk back in. Dis this for weeks. He qas looking for his friend. When our female cat passed, we allowed him to see her. He smelled her and immediately went into the corner and just sat staring at the wall for hours. It was so sad but eye-opening. However, he never sesrched for her. He was such a sweet soul. We rushed to the vet worried she wouldn't survive, vet asked us to note the alcohol content of the wine and try to estimate how many ounces she drank. People underestimate the importance of love and respect and genuine care. I've spent the last ten years surrounded by animals (horses, goats, sheep, cats, dogs, a chicken & a goose). I've found that they are all easiest to manage when treated like people, each with their own preferences and personalities, compunctions and vices. I try to respect their boundaries and wishes, and they respond by putting more trust in me and actually doing what I ask. They've become so obedient, they've got me convinced they know english. I can't help but feel that people and animals alike will have better, healthier lives if, all other things being equal: they feel loved, they are treated with respect, and they have a degree of personal autonomy.

@@shiracortez it is already known. cats absolutely need to have their daily dose of water delivered with food (so meat or wet food). its been known for decades that when they eat dry food, the water they drink to compensate for it is not nearly enough. proper hydration is essential in preventing the reocurrence of crystals and in keeping the kidneys healthy.

@@shiracortez yes, but they have those problems much less frequently if they eat only wet food, just as any other species can have urinary problems. (mixed diet still causes dehydration.) you asked why its a common problem in cats - which it is, they have crystals very often for a mammal - and dehydration is a very big factor. bigger water consumption = more diluted urine = different chemical conditions that affect the formation of crystals. at the same time, proper hydration cant give your cat a 100% guarantee of being free from urinary problems, cos thats not how bodies work. just as having a healthy diet doesnt mean youll never get sick.

If I'm not mistaken, the key ingredient in those cat foods that helps break up kidney stones is probably potassium citrate. Doctors prescribe this to humans with kidney stones that are too big to pass, so I couldn't be surprised if there is a small amount of potassium chlorate in that cat food. Edit: I originally put potassium chlorate, but I meant to put potassium citrate, so that change has been made. do NOT give your cats potassium chlorate.

Potassium citrate may also help with metabolic acidosis, which is associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). "

@@polyesterbeesIf you're worried about feeding commercial foods to a sick cat, you can consult a board-certified veterinary nutritionist to formulate a diet. Just remember that the term "pet nutritionist" isn't a protected term and a lot of people call themselves that without actual qualifications. They NEED to be a DACVIM (Nutrition). While carbs and grains aren't essential to a cat's diet, they can still provide energy and valuable nutrients. It's not true that vets are paid the recommended certain foods. A lot of large brands do fund research, but that research is peer-reviewed to ensure it's fair and accurate. Boutique brands put all of their money into marketing instead of research and demonize things like grains and "fillers" to sell more of their own food.
@shadowhowls
@shadowhowls 2 ай бұрын
@@polyesterbeesAlright so let me help with that - I'm a vet student with an interest in nutrition. The full answer is that, especially depending on which veterinary food is needed, it's pretty complicated. There's a lot of optimization going on behind the scenes that interacts on multiple levels across multiple body systems and nutrients. However, for the very most basics, there's usually a pretty quick answer. Kidney care diets often have restrictions on phosphates, sodium, and proteins to reduce stress on kidneys that are already hurting. For a few examples: Urinary diets that prevent struvites work by making the urine a little more acidic, which prevents the stones from forming. Hydrolyzed protein diets for food allergies have all the proteins broken way, way down so that the body can't recognize them as an allergen. Your vets /should/ be able to tell you how the food works if you ask them, though they might have to think on it for a few minutes to sort out how to explain it without all the jargon. The reason we in the veterinary profession love those food brands, corn and all, is because they're formulated by veterinarians that are on payroll with the company and constantly doing and reviewing research to further optimize the foods for better health and longevity of pets. While cats don't need corn, certainly, that doesn't mean they don't get anything from it. We have lots and lots of research saying that, as part of a balanced diet, they can digest and use it quite nicely. If you have any questions about these foods, please feel free to ask me or your local vet clinic! It might take a while for us to get a response to you, but we do have answers. Weirdly enough, Google also has been pretty good about answering "how does [brand and type of food] work?" pretty accurately, lately, if you don't feel like waiting for an answer. :)

These special diets are almost like medicine as well as food and the precision and special equipment that is needed to make it goes way beyond what you'd be able to do at home. 10:00 I hate to be this person I really do, but I am a biologist, so I must be. Speaking purely on genetics, you absolutely can have a "mix" of devon rex and sphinx on that single gene. Both genes are loss-of-function keratin genes which is why they are recessive and need two copies of the genes to be either Devon Rex or Sphinx. We each get one copy of each gene from our parents. If one copy is loss-of-function and one is normal, then the normal gene is usually able to make up for the shortcomings of the mutated gene. However, there are some instances of having two copies of two different loss-of-function mutations on the same gene that result in a new phenotype (trait, symptom, expression, etc.). For cats, the two different mutations on the same gene can result in varying phenotypes from having normal fur, curly fur, or no fur. Therefore, it is entirely possible for Grandpa to look the way he did and be a Devon Rex/Sphinx mix.
@suburaniumbrowzer

i woke up to youtube giving me the worst most depressing recommendations to listen to while i do my morning routine, thank you so much for posting something this wholesome ❤ something i've heard recently as i've delved back into learning about biology and evolution is that diet, whether an animal is herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore, isn't exactly.... static. an animal in the wild trying to survive will eat whatever is available to them, especially during tough times, and there are multiple examples of animals switching their "vore" down the line of their evolutionary tree. no i am not saying that an individual animal's diet can or should be changed - a carnivore should be fed a carnivore's diet - but it isn't uncommon or impossible for a diet to be supplemented with something outside of an animal's diet classification and can in fact in some cases be beneficial. i think animals supplementing themselves happens in nature more than we think. think of your dog eating the occassional grass, or reports of horses and deer randomly deciding to eat a baby bird or two lol. i don't know, i think it's fascinating, and you're right that there could be something to Perry's varied diet for his cats.

My Sid was adamant that I could eat neither popcorn, nor yoghurt without giving him some. He'd sit and watch me eat without blinking, waiting for me to give him some. He got the last spoonful of every yoghurt pottle I ate XD

My brother's cat, Loki, lived to the age of 19. He adopted her at an extremely young age. He had to carry her around and bottle feed her for a while. For the last couple of years of her life she had dementia, which I didn't even know was a thing that cats could have.

only 11 minutes into the video, just hearing all about how much Perry loved/loves his cats and how sweet and well taken care of Grandpa was made me cry. Just knowing that these cats were so loved and so cherished is making me emotional

shit, I lost my dog this year, and I knew this story would eventually come to grandpa Rex's passing, but I still felt it when you got to it. I miss you, Shusha. To every pet owner I'd say - they will, in most likelihood, pass within your lifetimes. It will hurt. So bad. But it will have been worth it, no matter what. Whether they were around for 1 year, or 30, as long as you gave them comfort and happiness, that's the only thing that matters. Love your furry/bald little friends.

Wow as a lifetime Austinite I am so excited for you to cover a story about my hometown! I know exactly that intersection of Windsor and Exposition that you mentioned. BTW, please keep us in your thoughts. Our asshole governor wants to take away our city charter--take away our ability to govern ourselves-- because the conservative ruling elite in Texas hates Austin so much. We have so much local culture that needs protecting :(

I was born in Austin and am still living here! Although I've heard of a man who had cats that lived for a crazy-long time and were on a very unique diet, I had no clue he was from Austin. I'm aware of the intersection Grandpa was found, as I live in a neighborhood that's not too far from there. There is a small pet shelter at that intersection interestingly enough.

One of my cats is obsessed with scrambled eggs. She used to try and swipe them off my plate every time I made them. Eventually I just gave in and made her her own scrambled eggs (without any salt, butter or cheese to make them cat friendly) she loves it!

3:10 hate your personal date being stolen by companies? Give all of it to this startup you've never heard of! Because as we know, tech companies have never lied about not selling your data! Incredible stuff right here.

If you want a decent, actually privacy respecting vpn, use mullvad. Most people don't actually need a vpn unless you wanna get past regionlocks. Use keepassxc for a passwordmanager. Its better and free. And you're not giving a shady tech startup access to all your passwords.

My friend had a cat named "Cervesa" because if you left a beer unattended, he would drink it [she did not leave beer unattended once she realized what he was doing]. It's possible Granpa just liked red wine, or maybe the dropper was just added to his water so it was diluted. I, myself, had a cat that lived nearly to 20 and she liked apricot jam. That doesn't mean apricot jam is the secret to a cat living 20 years, ya know? Whenever you ask somebody who's lived to 110 years old, they'll be like "I eat spam and drink Pabst for every meal, and that's the secret to a long life," so I think it's less likely that a very specialized diet had much to do with Perry's cats living so long, and it's more the odds of the cats genes being just right for them to have a prolonged life. If you adopt 400 of the critters, a few are bound to live an exceptionally long time.

😊I'm a plumber in SC, someone brought me a long haired black cat about 12 years ago for rodent control. I live in a cabin in the woods, and she's a outside cat. She's still in great shape, runs, climbs etc. She must be over 15 years old now.
