This painting helped me a LOT. Seeing how he simplified all the information really helped something “click” for me. Especially the nose, was very surprised how little detail you actually needed

A trick I have developed that helps sometimes when I am stuck on value issues is to turn down the lights in my room until my work is only dimly lit. I am working from a digital photo often, so I can still see all the detail on the reference, but the sketch/painting values become muted kind of like squinting, but interestingly different too. I'm probably not explaining it well, so apologies if this isn't clear...

Chris, thanks so much for the explanation about edges. You are right on the spot. I’m learning so much from your videos. Would you consider making a video about how a candle light reflects on the skin and how it would be depending on the time of the day. Thanks again. Blessings and take care. Inspiration in your videos is what brings me closer to better myself.

Hi Chris, as someone who's having to work hard at not over-blending, any tips for softening edges without over-blending the whole piece? How do you choose what to soften and what to keep as a hard edge? Thank you.

Hi Chris. Thanks for posting these important lessons. I paint as an amateur, mostly portraits. Do you think portraits are the hardest to paint and what is your basic advice for painting portraits? Is it possible to master this skill without school, that is, to be self-taught. Of course, with your generous help and useful lessons. Thanks

Hi Chris. This video is timely for me. I'm about to paint an acrylic portrait of a guy holding up 2 tuna in a fishing boat. He commissioned me to do this, but Ive never painted a human face before. We are only looking at about 2" by about 1 1/2" of facial real estate on a 11x14 canvas. Pretty nervous. I drew it out on paper and Will transfer it to the canvas with carbon paper. I'm gonna practice on an old canvas first. Any tips for me? Gulp!

Are masters known as masters because they were the best of their time or are we saying that even modern artists can't compare?
@trashbug48432 жыл бұрын
I believe it's all just a matter of time, a lot of our favorite writers and artists of today will be old, and maybe be considered old masters too. No one is an old master in their own time.

One thing that isn't obvious is, that the exact colour chosen isn't really important. 1:52 It's not the colour, it's the change in colour that creates the shapes.

often, teacher/student comparisons are like the difference between pre-20thC and post-20thC art.

Yes a good video but my worry is that some artists will lose their individuality due to a generic approach to painting. I actually rather liked the version with the harder edges.
@paintcoach2 жыл бұрын
The individuality comes with the artist decision to use or not use a technique where they see fit
