Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Even though I’m trying to paint digitally in Photoshop rather than with normal paints and brushes, this video was still very helpful in figuring out how to paint hair. Especially loved the tip on thinking about hair in shapes and masses rather than in individual strands and the tip on colour values changing depending on light sources (something I hadn’t noticed before)

It's amazing how you can reproduce the same face in different angles. You make portrait painting look so easy when it's the hardest part 8n anybody's career as an artistic painter.

I will never forget Troy's beautiful beach waves. That man was a stud then and he's a stud now. Thank you so much for using him in this lesson! I would hang all these on my wall. Edit: Brad-thirst aside I really learned a lot from this one. I do comic lineart so I have the shapes of hair down when it comes to lines, but now that I've started getting Into painting I was really struggling with understanding how to use lighting as a way to insinuate shape.

new viewer here. With all works of art, inspiration is 1% perspiration is 99% to find the perfect picture to paint. it is a picture, it is a photo. Abstract allows the viewer to engage in imagination. Realism means viewer is being told what they are looking at. either way there needs to be contrast. Black and white in harmony thanks for being handsome and talented yes, I need to draw more

You can do it too, you just need to put in the time and go through the path of successes and failures to get there. Just make sure you are able to analyze and understand why you failed. If not find a guide/teacher to help you go through your path. If they are not teaching you how to walk the path yourself, find someone else.

Good video. I especially like how you show us the paint--brush strokes CLOSE-UP and normal speed part of the time so we can almost feel how much pressure you put on the bristles . None of the other "on line teachers" take much time in such a tactic. Thanks!

Thanks Chris, this is very useful tip! I have a somewhat related question, about simplifying complex objects, and I hope you can give me some pointers in later videos: how would you treat stuff like a pile of oranges (e.g., in a market), or a brick wall (I've been painting EVERY brick on it!), etc. Thanks!

Very helpful vedo. One question: How do I show greyish white hair? If I use grey , black plus white, it appears bluish in the painting. How do I avoid the bluish effect?
@AK-wv4wz

Maybe use different black? For example grey from vine black vs lamp black are very distinct, or you can mix complementary colors to get different greys i think
