I appreciated your mentioning the illusion of a black monoculture. I totally understand why even we black people do the same. We were attacked as a group so it feel necessary to band together to fight back

Black Americans naturally developed a pseudo-monoculture specifically as a result of chattel slavery and racism. But the modern projection of that cultural allegiance onto every people around the world with our same (or similar) physical features is misguided. The transition from when people viewed each other from the standpoint of culture/tribe to this relatively new concept of race is fascinating to me and I hope to do a video about it soon.

@@st.johnthephilosopher1087 I think that's a really important point to bring up when having this conversation. The pan-African culture that developed in the US was specifically a result of the nature of slavery, and the way that the culture and identities of the Africans brought to the Americas, and their descendants, was wiped away to the point that they had no way of genuinely tracing their roots for the most part. But when talking about the actual continent of Africa, and the people who still live there, any notion of pan-Africanism becomes lip service at best. As you mention in the video, tribal allegiances go much deeper than physical appearances, which is true of all people everywhere. One has to just consider the literal thousand years of history that Europeans, who look mostly similar to each other, spent painting the continent red with each others' blood for pretty much any reason they could come up with. It's no different in Asia or in the Americas, historically at least.

Killmonger was really the first and so far only villain that has made me cry in the theater when he as defeated. I knew he couldn't win but when he's just kneeling there watching the sunrise on a kingdom that was his fathers that also rejected him, I full stop bawled my eyes out. Its just such a wonderful scene and I always think about how his life would have been different if T'challa's father had taken him with him that night.

I have never really thought of Killmonger as a villain, an antagonist to T'Challa yes, but not necessarily the villain. My initial thoughts after I saw the movie regarding Killmonger was, "he isn't wrong". I think this sentiment is why so many people loved the character. He was orphaned and abandoned and spent the rest of his life seeking revenge. Growing up in the U.S., his father's views, and knowing the truth about Wakanda shaped Erik's worldview. Also, I wouldn't say he sat around and did nothing then just became a villain. He graduated from Annapolis and MIT before becoming a Navy SEAL. Like he said, all the training, all the killing was to make his way to Wakanda and take the throne. The best quote that summarizes Killmonger as a character is, "The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth". If pressed for an answer to who the real "villain" is, I would say T'Chaka. Making Erik an orphan, abandoning him, then covering up the truth, created Killmonger.

T’Chaka’s story is also interesting in that it was in the midst of doing the right thing (stopping his brother from starting a world war) that he made the evil decision to abandon Eric. The film rightly frames both actions correctly. It’s a testament to the complex characters we find sitting on thrones throughout history: the fact that we must correct the wrongs of leaders past without necessarily destroying what they built and that their evils of yesterday shouldn’t be used to justify new evils today or tomorrow.
@hexazalea1793

He goes through all of that to Arrive at basically Black Hitler. He has the Education to know that Wakanda is evil which admitably he does and takes steps to remedy this. It's just that his stated goal amounts to a black version of conquering the world in the name of the Aryan race.
@mell030
@mell030 3 жыл бұрын
@@hexazalea1793 not really sure how you came to that conclusion. Killmonger was not motivated by the false belief that he was a part of the master race and that those who were of a different race or ethnicity were a problem that needed to be solved. He wanted to shift power dynamics globally and rule over EVERYONE (not just people who weren't Black) and exploit Wakanda to do so. His objective was two-fold: take the throne, conquer the world.

I think the line is also taking ownership of your role, your mistakes, the part you played, and then make amends to rectify them. T'Challa is willing to do that by the end, but Killmonger refuses to do so.

"Do you really despise Imperialism, or do you covet the throne? I pray the people who see themselves in [Kilmonger] take a close look at what that really means."- I covet the throne, bro. I covet hard ;) All kidding aside, here's the thing about power: When you finally get it, why would you want to give it up? This pretty much reflects the way a lot of groups of people are acting today, so take that as you will. Good video

Killmonger is a great villian cause he is an amoral psicopath who is willing to do anything to live his fantasy of liberating the world when in relality he is just using it as a justification for his crave for violence and hatred and his only interest is himself, he is not a country leader, he is a cult leader, theonly person he cares about in the end, is himself, he was not born a monster, society created him You can defend him all you want and call him the real hero but doesnt change the fact that he would kill you and your family without feeling remorse if it mean to accomplish his goals, The hero and villian had many similarities but the biggest difference is that Tchalla has morals, Erick doesnt, Tchalla wanted justice for his father, Erick wanted vengeance, Tchalla wants equallity, Erick wants everyone to suffer equally

I now always seen the movie as not about the greater of two evils but t'challa finding what king he should be. To me he sees multiple extremes. From his fathers beliefs of isolation to kill mongers belive in just taking the world over to control it yourself. While he also sees nakia and her want to help the outside world and his sister who really just only was seen with her love of science and her want to explore and discover. I feel like this video did a perfect explanation how kilmonger is one of the greatest villains with his one villainous scene

I found this a bit off topic. While insightful, you seemed to drift into personal views boarding on sociopolitical commentary, rather than what made this FICTIONAL character a compelling villain... and a cinematic feat. The most rewarding contributions of this series have been those which have been more descriptive in nature and lean to the technical aspects of story-telling. Still a good effort imo.

Most creators on the list concentrate on the craft itself, but when I comment on entertainment, it’s about its socio-cultural impact and political/philosophical significance. There’s crossover, but the character of the work can be quite different. I can see where my video may feel out of place among the others. But thanks for watching and the comment!

As a guy who watches a lot of shit, I couldn't get with the movie as a whole nor the villain. His overacting took me away from taking him seriously. Because black people are trying to make a spot for themselves in cinema, theres a lot of overly black stuff that distracts me from the stories attempted to be told. Black Lightening suffered from it, Ciscos replacement on the flash, and this. Instead of the them telling stories about people who happen to be black, it becomes, "look at us be black with a black cast with black problems and its like ok i get it, can you tell a good story please?"This video has helped me appreciate the movie and villain much more than I ever thought i would. And I'm black. Thanks.

I do get really tired of the “black-ity black” stuff in Hollywood as well. (And don’t get me started on the race-swap stuff either.) But pushing aside all the hype around it and the couple of “colonizer” cracks here or there, I didn’t find this film to fit the mold of things like Black Lightening or even Falcon and Winter Soldier. Sounds like your enjoyment of it was tainted by outside forces when it first came out. I’m glad I could get you on board. ;-)

@@st.johnthephilosopher1087 outside of that, the story was so predictable i couldnt even act surprised if i wanted to. the group of people i went with were all women who thought dressing up in "African" attire would make the experience more rich. We got there late because they had to put on makeup for 30 minutes despite being in a dark room looking forward at a screen (so how tf can anyone see your fake face if we all looking at a screen in the dark?). Knowing how impervious Black Panther is, I never believed he was in any danger. with that notion i didnt feel any of the stakes. That could have something to do with me not eating beef ever....
