If you have to set an alarm to get up at a certain time, get a timer for a bedside lamp. Being awakened by light is gentler than being awakened by an alarm clock. If you are in deep sleep when the lamp comes on, it probably won't wake you up. So set an alarm clock to go off 10 minutes later. That, of course, will wake you up, but thanks to the lamp, you probably won't be in deep sleep when the alarm clock goes off.

Nice idea, might try some day. As it is I am awoken by IPhone sound of bird chirping slowly getting louder rather than a Jerk awake standard alarm.
@alwaysuseless5 жыл бұрын
@MissVasques .. The SLOWLY getting louder is very cool. Of course, a timer is way cheaper than an iPhone. I have a lamp on both sides of the bed. If I got a timer for the other lamp, I could set it for 10 minutes later and never set an alarm clock. I couldn't sleep through both lamps being on.

I use a lamp only with no audible alarm. I use a bright, daylight bulb (white light like the sun) on a floor lamp so it lights up my whole room. I have found that I feel much better waking up this way and after just a couple days, I began to wake up a couple minutes before the light would turn on
@alwaysuseless5 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Nicholls ..This sounds good too. No pun intended. I would especially like your method, if the artificial sunlight slowly got brighter. Of course, one could just leave the shades, blinds, or whatever up, if rising with the sun were your aim. The problem with that, though, is it's better to sleep in a pitch dark space, and the street lamps and other outdoor lights make that only possible with all blinds, curtains, etc. drawn. I actually use cardboard between the glass and the blinds cut to the exact size of the windows.

For anyone willing to try this: start on weekends and notice when you wake up naturally, and then on first weekday set an emergency alarm at the latest possible time, prepare ahead of time for work ( prep breakfast, bag, work, outfit, plan whatever you need) for the fastest bed to office/class. If you wake up before your alarm, then get up right away. If you don’t , that means you need to sleep earlier. Make sure you don’t do this on days you went out of your routine (example: hanging out till late, revenge procrastination, deadline work or study). Eventually you’ll start getting sleepy at a regular time if you maintain a regular wake up time. Include exercise or physical activity in your day as well.

I have been waking up without an alarm for only 5 days now, but I can already say the positive impact of doing so is disproportionately higher than what I could imagine. I have been coupling this with a bunch of other pieces of advice (mostly from this channel) but I feel the no-alarm thing might be the single most important factor.
@advenco3444 жыл бұрын
How has it helped you?
@matteosposato94484 жыл бұрын
@@advenco344 I used to be able to postpone my alarm endless times, and in each of the 10-minutes intervals between two consecutive alarms I was able to fall back to sleep quickly and fully. This means I was losing a lot of time and also feeling unhappy because I would normally wake up tired (even if, in terms of duration, I was probably getting enough sleep) and rarely get up at the time I wanted. Now I am consistently waking up feeling more energised and always able to get up right away. As I said, I am also doing most/all of the things suggested in the playlist to which this video belongs (including going to sleep / waking up at regular times and exposing myself to sunlight as soon as I can) - but, if you had to ask me what I feel, my feeling is that leaving the alarm out had an early and detectable impact. More precisely, I feel that the sleep cycle issue (at around 6:00 in this video) might be the most relevant element in my case. But even the first thing, mentioned at 4:49, I guess.

Waking up naturally seems to be the biggest factor in my sleep. Some nights ill sleep 9 hours but still want more, then even like last night, i slept for 5, but because i woke up naturally via sunlight, i was way more prepared for the day. I think its time to keep my blinds up.

It’s not weird. I don’t know you obviously but I think if you didn’t use an alarm for a week or two you’d start sleeping less. Sleep debt is a thing.

This is all true... but I work in two shifts cycling every week. First from 06:00- 14:50 and from 14:50 - 11:20. In the early shift I can go to bed at 8 or 9 pm and feel really good when I wake up. And I could do it without a alarm clock. But them comes my night shift and I have to cange my sleep cycle again. And here I go to sleep about 1 am in the morning. So I can't stand up at 4:45 I have to sleep more. And I have two kids so I always have to determine that I have a little less sleep. Thats why I go to bed in my morning shift so early. This is all really complicated if you have family, working in shifts and maybe have a hobby that you want to go after. But anyways this video was very great and informative. :)

I have to be up by a certain time each day to make it to class on time. I use my phone alarm, but I have it set to a gentle song from my playlist. And, I have it set so that the song starts off at a very low volume and gradually get louder. I found this to be a much better alternative to a screeching, beeping, heart attack inducing traditional alarm!

If I let my body decide how much sleep I need, it will be like: Day 1: 8h Day 2: 8.5h Day 3: 9h Day 7: 15h Sorry, I have to limit it to 8 only.

You missed 1 very important thing; routine. I didn't set an alarm for months, but most of the time I'm still tired when waking up. Here is where routine comes in. If you wake up around the same time everyday, you'll feel more rested. (But still waking up naturally)

Customer Support There is also a thing called ”sleeping more than you expected” and a thing called ”not falling asleep immedietly you hit the bed”. Of course i try to get sleep early as i can. If i wanted my proper sleep which is usually 10 hours, i should be sleeping at 7:30pm. I just can’t do it. And if i could i still woudln’t take the risk i sleep too long. I see your a kid who doesn’t understand how important having a job is.

I have a question. You said you recommend us to wake up without an alarm for a week so that we know our sleep cycle, right? Thanks for sharing the knowledge with us. I heard some people say to go to bed only when you're tired. My question for you is, when should I go to bed? Thank you! By the way, I'm new to your channel and I've already subscribed you.
@BetterThanYesterday5 жыл бұрын
You should set your sleep pattern in a way that supports your daily schedule. There are plenty of ways to manipulate it and I already made a video on it. When should you go to bed is up to you. But try to find out what your sleep chronotype is. Some people function best in the morning. While others are what we call "night owls" and they are in their most optimal state late at night. There is no right or wrong time to go to bed, I did however come over a research that says that the most optimal hormonal release happens in the hours between 10 to 12 at night. Good luck!

Yes I do. Every day I go to sleep at pretty much the same hour, so I also start to feel tired at that time. Usually between 10-11pm.

@davidcharles71065 жыл бұрын
They make alarm clocks not that start with a sound - such as gentle rain - and gradually the volume will increase so that you are woken up in an easy manner. Some alarm clocks are way too abrupt and I don't believe they are a good way to wake up - waking up is important and being awoken in an abrupt manner is not good.

I have an alarm on 8AM, with relaxing music. If I wake up from that alarm I don’t feel stressed and take my time to turn it off. Most days it rings when I’m dreaming and if I remember correctly, then you have rem-sleep during dreaming, So actually for me the alarm is perfect.

I've been finding out that my mental state influences the amount of time I need to sleep a lot. Before the pandemics, I was reasonably happy; at that time 6h were usually enough. On the other hand, since the pandemics started, I've been in a kinda depressed mood and not feeling happy overall. 6h don't do it anymore; if I sleep without an alarm I'll wake up after 8-9h and not feeling completely rested.
@wesnohathas19934 жыл бұрын
I've experimented with some different sleep times. At 9 hours, I wake up feeling very groggy and unpleasant, then wind up with trouble going to sleep the following night. At 6 hours, I wake up more alert, but don't feel fully rested and tire sooner in the day. At 7.5 hours, I seem to generally get the best end result, but it can be very difficult to stay awake at that time. Going without an alarm has yielded highly varied results for the time I wake up. It's been as early as 4:00 AM and as late as 9:00 AM.
