I lived in a similar but larger cabin in mid wales, the wood burner installer recommended we get rid of the chimney and install a double walled steel chimney, it worked beautifully and I liked the look. We chose a 7w wood burner which heated the whole cabin although it did get too hot sometimes. James pirigioni’s channel has instructions for making covers for raised beds you could use the materials that you used for the greenhouse. I think a lean to greenhouse would benefit both the greenhouse and the house itself and give you a more stable structure. I’ve loved watching you think thru your problems and not being afraid to give it a go❤️
@gnarbeljo89802 жыл бұрын
I dont know the status of her chimney, but the way these work in Sweden is both the woodburner/stove in the kitchen and the tiled woodburner in the living room each has a separate pipe running through the chimney up to the roof. Both woodburners she has, when in working condition are more than enough to heat the entire house very efficiently! The one in the kitchen is also a stove and cooker and there are copper water basins with a little tap that can be used with them and inexpensive second hand, so they are really valuable, same Swedish quality as AGA stoves. The tiles one is original to the house, likely 1800s, and has an ingenious internal five pipe system running up and down inside holding on to the hot air for a long time. Yes they are sensitive when you fire them up after being cold for a long time, you have to start very small and gradually so the mortar doesnt crack from shock, but once all the internal pipes have been hot for some hours or half a day you can fire up four logs at once and close the iron doors (inside the brass ones which remain open when firing) and pull the flu to only a third open and the fire will burn from evening to around dawn. If only one logburner works it should still me enough! I'd have made that my priority number one with such a property. The electric prises are running wild, no end in sight, and it gets very cold in winter, and wood is cheap and all around! I'd also have sawed and chopped up the fallen birch for firewood early as firewood needs drying out, cannot be fired green. Being comfortable indoors through long winter months, especially with renovations would have topped my list before other projects, being a Swede, or half Swede, and living here. No need to replace burners at all, it's all about the brick chimney perhaps in need of repair to be fire safe, and the pipes within being swept and tested with pressurized air. Heating also cures and dries any wood used indoors for renovations, as wood swells and shrinks with temp and humitidy changes. It would be essential in my book. The hearth is the heart of a house! And the chimney has a central position so once it functions it will heat evenly all around.
@badger91562 жыл бұрын
Oh this is a good overview of the Swedish range/fireplace/cooker. Sounds like it will be amazing once it has been recommissioned 🔥. I second getting firewood cut and stacked for drying with plenty of time for drying before it is necessary. I live for fires over winter, the radiant heat makes life so cosy

I see a lot of bravery here-a risk-taker willing to stick her neck out and teach herself how to do new things! What you have accomplished looks great (love the bathroom!) and you should feel a real sense of accomplishment. Thirty years ago my husband and I renovated a tiny 500 square foot home. We eventually enclosed the carport and made it 700 square feet. We had to do pretty much everything-new roof, kitchen, flooring, some plumbing, electrical. It took us six years to complete! We learned it always costs twice as much as you think and takes twice as long. 😂

So glad you decided to have the heating situation looked at. With the electricity prices in our area I think thats a really wise step. Have the "Sotare" (chimneysweep) in your area come do a quick inspection and go from there. They are the only ones that can approve or condemn a fireplace/chimney system. I really would make that top priority. You have a lot of timber spillage, and that tree that fell in the storm should get you through the entire winter. As always - keep it up.
@NoCatStrangling2 жыл бұрын
Fireplaces, esp. old ones, are notoriously inefficient. A small woodstove (like a Jotul, maybe?) would heat your home for free and, as Jimmy said, make good use of the dead timber on and around your lot. The ashes will be good for your compost, too.

You have really made a lot of progress. I'm impressed. I have a suggestion about the shutter window, which I believe will let winter in into the whole house. You can make a temporary "winterwindow" from plexi-glass, which you easily can screw and unscrew on the window frame. Put insulationtape on the edges or even make it "dubble-glass" with a wooden frame in between. Cheep and easy to keep winter out. During summer you just take it off.

Or even just plastic sheeting. My granny had a porch she used all winter long by installing plastic sheet stretched over a wood frame that fit right inside the porch windows. Hello again Roseanne! This is Cheryl from NE USA. I"m up to your 1st year in cabin video-wise. You mentioned having moisture problem in pump house... you could try putting plastic down under all flooring and weighing it down to keep it on ground. This keeps the ground moisture from rising into pump house. Worked for me in a little house I rented. I used discarded heavy plastic bags a furniture store regularly threw away (the sofas came in big bags.) I weighed it down with bricks. You know- around video 22 or so it looks like working on your house has really changed you. You started carrying yourself in a much more relaxed and confident way! I really enjoy seeing all the creative ways you work around not having needed materials and tools. That gives me ideas for stuff I can do around here.

As you learn everything will go a bit faster too, but everything ALWAYS takes longer than planned. I am amazed at your tenacity. If I were you I would have had many days where I would have cried and asked myself what on earth I thought I was doing. Yet, here you are, going strongly after a year. Also, building when you don't have someone to help you pick up heavy stuff, help you to hold something in place for you, etc. is really hard. I am a woman living on my own who like DYIing and I know just what a struggle it can be. Watching people renovating older properties always gives one a sense of how much we take for granted. Yet when you have to struggle for everything AND do it yourself, the appreciation runs far deeper. I can't wait to see what you achieve in the next year.

Bravo ‼️ I’ve never screwed two boards together. And you made a wall and you fixed the floor and you’re creating a kitchen. As far as gardens go we learn more every single year. It’s taking me a long time to figure it out. Cold weather crops grow Better. Cherry tomatoes ripen faster than beefsteaks. Lettuce cabbage kale turnips carrots and potatoes. Strawberries and raspberries. Hops bines for tea. In front of the shutters in the bathroom you could place cardboard double or triple thick. Same with all the windows at night in winter. Take it down in the day. Makes a huge difference as far as indoor temperature. Seems very peaceful as well as lovely. And no crime like in bad neighborhoods in the city. You have stuck with it dear and I hope you can be encouraged. I just wanted to add that it’s remarkably innovative to have even found this property in the first place. From my perspective the next vitally important thing is to buy a small wood stove pronto. Blessings ❣️

You’ve got a lot of talents! You have accomplished so much! Work towards getting you a solar/electric generator that heat and air conditioning . They’re small, but they work amazingly. Eco-Flo is one may diy use.

We have always said...everything will be twice as high as you think and twice as long as you expect! Love your little home! That you have tackled this on your own is amazing! Keep up the hard work! A woodstove/ fireplace is essential!

Welcome to Sweden! You've done an awesome job with your house. I bought a property like this last year. My house is about 90 square meters and there is an old stable from the 1700s on the property. I've been renovating for a year and now I can live there permanently if I want. What people don't realise is how much work, energy, and time a project like this requires.

I am SO impressed with your resolve and determination to see this project through! I think you have made amazing progress considering you work another job. My grandfather was a master carpenter and I can barely tell tools apart...so I am envious of your developing skills. If I was 30 years younger I would love to do something like this. I am looking forward to seeing your progress and wish you a productive, warm and cozy winter.

A cottage in rural Sweden that you get to restore or enhance with room for a garden. That is the life!

Your house is amazing! I admire you so much! In your bathroom have you thought about making or putting a screen in your window to keep the bugs out? I also like the idea of the shudder look! You are doing so well ! You are encouraging others! God bless you dear! ☀️☀️☀️
