Tip for those types of mre rations. Like most ppl eating a bag of crisps you're attacking it from the top. But with hot meals you want to turn it on the side and open the long end instead. This gives a larger opening to give easier and more comfortable access to the contents.

Well Dan, this for me was one of the best videos you've done, the reason being is you did much more in the video than you're usual ones, you went through the trouble of preparing your fire pit and fuel. This may not seem much to many people however it shows younger people just what can be achieved with the minimum of equipment no need for gas stoves etc these do have there uses during bad weather conditions. Anyhow loved the video as I always do, thanks for sharing. 👍👍

Just a note about Dakota fire holes. Do not make one too close to a tree. It can burn the roots of the tree thus badly damaging the health of the tree. Or worse yet it can set the roots on fire under ground and kill the tree. Great video. I always look forward to you popping up on my notifications.

A good substitute for manufactured firelighters are cotton wool balls smeared in Vaseline. They burn well, compact down in a plastic tube and are available for small burns and blisters if required. Like the video by the way.

You did a fine job on the Dakota firepit. It drew well and kept the flames low enough. You made it just the right size for your cooking needs. You picked a lovely spot to put up the bivvy: under that fine tree and not down in that ditch you pointed out at first.

Great video dan, The only thing to be careful of is the closeness to the tree roots you make your fire, it can damage root systems or even burn under ground for weeks. Also be careful of the type of substrate like clay or peat. but anyway great vid loved the ration pack not one ive tried yet.

Did a Dakota fire pit for my first wild camp. I told the land owner where I’d be he still had trouble finding me when he popped up for a drink. I used a Lomo water sport tripod with it. Great camp, great vid safe safe Dan atb 👍🦊

Looking forward to more videos. When camping we're usually in a vehicle so I take my dutch ovens and cook and bake up a storm. Cake, pudding, scrumptious ribs, roasts, pork loin with onion, potatoes 50 ways, etc. etc. But I Love the rations you share. Had no idea they made so many different varieties. Keep them coming... to be free of heavy loads is an advantage in emergencies. Thank you sir!

One cool thing is that charcoal is actually very good for soil amendment, so when you bury the Dakota fire pit afterwards it's actually pretty good for the environment :)

I love your Monolouge's to the camera, explaining how it can sometimes get a bit boring on your own. I get just the same thoughts, and as the longer nights start to draw in and morre time spent in the tent it becomes a bit more of an issue. Super interesting ideas. I do like seeing different stealth camps, including the dakota fire pit and bivy. That bivy looks intriguing. I do like the side entry quite a bit....easier than crawling in from the top. I also find that I can stick my pack up above my head inside of bivies like that because I'm only 5'4", keeping all of my kit and gear in the bivy with me at night. It's a little heavy, but not bad at all for the budget price and if you aren't doing multi nights in it. Awesome find. Also, I find the MREs from different countries really really fascinating. I was in the US Army back in the 90's and ours were much less interesting. I also remember they would have me running for the latrine pretty quickly! lol Thanks for the entertaining videos.

I saw ounce someone making that whole, they stacked up a ring of dirt around the pit to add an extra 6 - 8 inches of height to the whole. Then you can have a larger fire

Good video, like the cross over using the ration packs, works well together. I like using the ration packs, I know providing I take water and a away to boil it I have what I need. I have a terrible memory. I use a phoxx 1 in woods. I have used a bivvy tent called ferrino sling 1 but I find it a little too low and get a little stir crazy with it. Big thumbs 👍 up on this one.

I like about your videos Dan as you don't go on about expensive camping equipment like some others do! It's simple and straight to the point. The Rat Packs are great and worth the money compared to some of the camping food that you can get!! And they've come on a long way...no more biscuits brown and cheese possessed 😆😆 But you should have kept some of that hot chocolate and added it to your porridge 😋Been there done that...ahh those were the days 😊

Great vid, thanks for putting that together. Dakota firepit seems to work like an underground rocket stove, and you can see how efficient the burn was from all the glowing embers. Top work, all the best.

That's exactly how they work. If you dig out the dimensions and the angle of the breath hole correctly, they roar like a blowtorch. Fuel efficient as well. The dakota fire holes don't give off smoke cos of the intense heat they generate from being fed with an endless supply of oxygen. Smoke is caused by fuels thats hold moisture. Green stuff that obviously hasn't had time to dry naturally, or any other fuel that's damp. The dakota fire hole burns fiercely at temperatures far higher than a surface fire cos the oxygen feed is concentrated and channelled straight to the bottom of the fire. Then the flames are drawn upwards by a chimney effect. Basically a small feed inlet and a large exhaust outlet. They don't give off smoke cos anything you feed the hole with is incinerated by the unbelievable intense high temperatures. Green or damp fuel doesn't go through the gradual drying out process like an above ground fire.

@@chrisbardell I'll always dig a fire hole if circumstances and situations allow me to. I've been digging them for yrs. Once you've had a couple of practice runs you soon learn how they work and how to dig them to get the best out of them. Nothing complicated that needs to be dimensionally exact. Just a few basic rules to use as a guide. 1- the actual fire "pit" needs to be a bigger diameter than the fire " hole" outlet. 2- if possible, try to get a rough idea of which direction any wind or breeze is coming from. (If any). And dig your oxygen feed hole so it's on the side of the hole where the wind direction is coming from. 3- best performance is to dig the feed hole so it's in a straight diagonal angle from ground level to the bottom of the fire pit. And most importantly, the air feed hole needs to be smaller in diameter than the rest of the pit construction. If you make the feed hole too big, the fire won't draw the air in fast enough. A bit like trying to blow up a paper bag with one of the bottom corners cut off. However, if you make it too small, it will struggle draw the air in. A bit like trying to drink yoghurt through a straw. It's not an exact science though. Once you've sussed out how it all works you'll know what I mean. Possibly just a bit of trial and error at first.

Just wear a HI VIS and walk around with a surveying stick to gain entry. Cooking is a different matter though and the Dakota fire pit is a great technique to reduce one’s visibility.

Looked fun. With every fire you do in the wild the shovel is good to have just in case it get out of control. I know it’s heavy but it’s multi use and some of the best defensive weapons you could carry especially in a place like you are in. All the lights and banging metal on metal isn’t very stealth but you play your game. Stay safe.

Chin up great video I’ve been stealth camping out since I was 9/10 years old and I’m now 53 and still do it, but every now and then I still get scared for me it’s why I do it as it’s a buzz 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂 you probably heard a badger or a small mammal as they always sound louder at night. Hi you can buy fire pit gloves that are designed for what your welding gloves aren’t designed for then you’ll pick stuff out the fire without it getting too hot to handle they have limitations too but I can pick hot coals out the bbq with them so figure they would be better welding gloves protect from sparks and the light plus heat of welding but you don’t pick up hot things with them you can get ones with glass Matt on that work , anyways great video loved the extra protein in your chiclet if I saw it right swimming in the water afore you boiled it every little helps great video all the best
