BIG MISTAKE!! Overnight camping in a tube survival tent

I spend one night camping in a tube survival tent & eating a 24-hour Italian ration pack.
This thermal & waterproof tube survival tent is not the best because the leave of condensation that builds up is unbelievable and not in a good way.

Hey Dan - tinned food in ration packs. Those of us that are old enough and ugly enough will have had a lot of experience with the 'cold war' British army ration packs. I'm a veteran of 13 years service, and when I started, the ration packs had tins in them. This is how you use them. Using a hexamine stove, and a mess tin, you part fill a mess tin with water, and stand the partially opened can in the water. This is in effect a 'bain marie'. The boiling water heats the contents of the tin. Once the contents are hot enough, you pick up the tin and EAT FROM THE TIN. No washing up needed. The same goes for all other tins, pouches (unopened). You heat them with this method. THEN, the hot water goes into your mug to make a brew. This way the only thing that needs washing is 1 x mug and a few wet wipes should sort that out, again, no water wasted. The mess tin has only had water in it, though the bottom will need some cleaning from the soot from the hexamine blocks. I don't think I have ever seen any outdoor channel get this right. If you're carrying what you are living off, then you want as much of the water you carry to be consumed. Not wasted washing out pans unnecessarily. In terms of the survival shelter, bear this in mind. I spent all of my time in the army without any enclosure. A roll mat, sleeping bag, and a goretex bivvi bag and a poncho shelter overhead to keep the rain and snow off, most of the time, operating down to sub zero conditions, and weeks at a time. Any item like that shelter, that keeps the wind off, is an added bonus and would be considered luxury by most soldiers.

Reinforces an argument I have had with a number of people on YT. When I was in the forces I was taught a number of things through actual practice, especially in the Arctic. Space blankets etc are useful for an hour or so. but after that they are only good for keeping the wind and rain off for another hour or so. We used to hve a smock that had 4 big pockets and more importantly a poachers pocket. We always had food, first aid and I used to keep my bivvy bag in the poachers pocket. All jackets nowadays have eff all room for anything and think if it hits the fan your backpack will bail you out. Dont bank on it.

Great video and good lessons for those who are not that way inclined. Always carry a lighter, lighter, lighter. If people can remember to carry their Ferro rod, they can remember a lighter. BIC lighters are so cheap and very reliable, even when wet I have one in almost every pocket, every EDC and every stove set up I have. Of course its better to have more than one option, but a BIC will guarantee you between 3000 and 5000 flames and may be the difference between a hot meal or not.

I agree and I do the same, I don’t give them money in case it’s wasted on drugs, alcohol or smoking. I know that addiction is hard to resist and so help them get warm food and a drink instead because they might not have the willpower to choose food over the addiction, not judging just know from family member experience that the addiction always came first.

Hi Dan, one golden rule is having the ability to easily light a fire 🔥 or to light up a stove, especially in a bad situation. The humanitarian packs contain a flat pack stove with the smaller (green) BCB Firedragon blocks, using just one of those blocks would have ensured a rapid light up from your flint and steel. The green BCB Firedragon blocks are on eBay.

One lousy Cherry 🍒! 😆 Me Mum would always give us that fruit salad after eating our meat. There was a lousy half of a Cherry that we all wanted badly. Dan, Imperial measurements originated in England. The USA kept the Imperial measurements and England went to the metric system. Celsius and Centigrade are the same. Just different way of measuring. neither are better. As far as the women in the food bank keeping warm. I do understand the food banks position, but it was your money. I’d have had no shame asking for some of the money back, so you could give it to the cold women. Here’s my other thought. I’d bet that the women was so far behind in electric, that it would’ve taken much more £’s to turn back on. Also, you know that governments love to hurt a person when they’re down. There could’ve been reconnect charges and fines.. Dan, it was a beautiful thing to do. There’s less and less caring in this world. You e got a great big heart Dan! 👊🏻

Unfortunately you never truly know where people's money has gone Supplying food does just that, keep people fed. I agree with the lady in the food bank, as soon as they start donating any amount of cash, the genuine people who are struggling will get out numbered by people who'll take advantage of getting cash. Keep up the support for them, giving your time up is very honourable.

Hello Dan, from NZ, I have used the survival bag twice in a real situation. This may sound counter to what you want to achieve, but I put a slit in the back wall and open it up like the front wall, I then take some vines or long strips of thin branches and tie them together in the form of a mesh, making at least 30 x 30cm squares. I then take long fern fronds or thin branches with leaves left on and weave them through the mess this is then placed at the back wall, this will stop the buildup of condensation and at the same time stop a through wind. This has worked for me, and I have stayed dry. This has to be done about an hour before dark as it does take a little time to do but well worth the effort. On the subject of heating the tin in the fire, you were wise not too, I believe it is carcinogenic, also if it melts with the heat, you will consume it. When the cans are empty, I throw them on the fire this does two things, one, it burns off any food left in the tin and stops rats etc, from coming around your tent site, two, it quickens the rusting of the tin. In the morning I crush them and carry them out. Enjoyed the video. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

people want the moon. The best I have found for minimalist stuff is a 1 lb net hammock, 1.5 lb XL size reflective Tyvek bivy, the "Trifecta" from 2GoSystems, and 6 oz "envelope' around the bivy, made of 2 taped together heavy duty 55 gallon drum-liners. I use both a 1 lb buttpack and a 1.5 lb daypack. I empty out the packs, fill them with debris and use them as sleeping pads. This suffices down to 40F in just cammies. If I add the two 1/4 lb each Amazon bugnet suits, and the two Amazon 1/2 lb each "cut-leaf" type of camo nets, , the ensemble, worn as longjohns, lets me sleep ok at 30F., if I have the balaclava, gloves, 3 pairs of sock liners, shemagh, unlaced shoes. I wear wiggy's net longjohns when it's below about 50F, all of the time, cause they keep me dry. I can add dry debris between the bugnet suits and the wraps of the camo nets (this time outside of my cammies) and i can sleep ok at 20F. If it's cold, I hang the hammock just 6" off of the ground and kick debris under the envelope, so as to stop air from flowing under me. There's also the 4 stakes, tape, cordage and a 3x4 ft oval of clear PEVA shower curtain, for use with the one way projected heat of a Siberian fire lay, or the morning sun. It can add almost 20F degrees, for a few hours. A discrete Dakota fire pit can heat up rocks to be put in the footbox of the bivy, and they help 10F degrees or so, for 3 hours. Hot water bottles will do the same, for 2 hours. I good set of longjohns will add about 10F degrees, IF you dont wear them any time except for sleeping. They have to be kept dry. I carry them in the third drum liner, in case I get soaked. None of the gear is effected by its getting wet. All of it is useful in hot weather and it's all wearable as clothing. Not having to lug aroun 4 lbs of winter clothing is very nice. I dont need rainsuit, poncho, ground cloth, tarp, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad. So I save about 8 lbs over what everyone else carries in order to handle the same problems. Not having a hammock, bug protection, wind and rain protection etc, is a big mistake. out there, folks.

word about the lining. You need it sustained over 177C/350F to begin to chemically break down. The internal processing temperatures are in the 150C/300F when the can is hot processed in factory (home processing is 115C/240F for 1.5 HOURS minimum. 2 minutes over an warm fire to bring to boiling 100C/212F is FAR less than that can has seen before you opened it.

DO NOT TOUCH THE TENT! I realise that you have grown-up in the era of modern, hi-tech, fabrics, but you were already aware of the condensation problem. You are, and aware, that you are sleeping in a plastic bag. It is a survival shelter, not a week-long camping tent. Stop trying to make problems.

Food bank.. Giving help is great. Giving money is not the answer, [not to sound trivial or Callous but] it is the same principle as feeding the birds in your garden, the birds become dependant on it and the moment you stop putting the bird feed out they are then In trouble. So OK if you are going to do it be prepared to keep on doing it. [which is great if you are a billionaire] but as people have already told you, look after you and yours 1st.

60 Pounds down the 'tube tent.' Possibly just using the bivvy bag would have been enough/better? Plenty of KZbinrs have been featuring MREs from one nation's Army or another's. There is no need for you to repeat THAT survey. YOU might just select ration packs you would like and tell us about them. Try to get ones that are still well-within their 'use-by' date.

you can't let the tyvek touch you, or it'll form a cold spot. Pull the hammock and a ridgeline thru the bivy. Pull another ridgeline thru the "envelope". The layer of "trapped air" around the bivy is what insulates you from the cold, wind and rain. I DO get condensation inside of the envelope, but the tyvek and the hammock see to it that the moisture never touches me.. Avoid the regular size bivy, unless you're a little Asian guy. and cut the rain flaps off of the zipper, or they WILL jam with you inside of the bivy.. Use a light to look for air leaks in the bivy or the envelope and patch them with tape. YOu can't let the envelope touch the bivy or you'll lose body heat at that point. Fold over the bottom corners of the bivy and the "envelope" and tape them into place. This creates a "mummy" configuration and reduces heat loss from your lower legs and feet.

Dan, great video as always. NEVER put a tinned food directly in a fire, even if opened.. The tins are lined with either lacquer, like inside a coke can or any that look clear, beans etc. or a plastic film.. this WILL burn and melt and give off toxic gases and ingredients into your food. Use a mess tin and dent the tin, pop it in.. once it pops out it's warm (not hot) Once it deforms it's hot.! Or open once warm (carefully!) and it'll be a hand warmer too.! But always in a mess tin with water, then use the water for your brew.. Saves wasted water. Anyone who's served in the forces back in the old days would tell you the same.. Old skool.!
