Had it for the past 5-6 years because it belonged to my granddad who died like 10 years ago. I never used it assuming it was just a bad old camera. Thanks to you I rediscovered it a few months ago and understood why my granddad used it so much

Excellent review, thanks! Tips: You can easily change the battery for the date/clock - just check inside the battery compartment and you will find a "trey" with a flat battery. Super easy to change :)

I bought the G1 in 2000, my first digital camera. Absolutely loved it! I worked around its limitations - just accepted them, really. Made A3 prints from a few photos - just don't look too closely! When I look through the family albums, mostly 5x6, I have to remind myself that the photos were taken with a 3 megapixel camera. I think the lenses on the G cameras have always been good too and that goes a long way.

Had this camera back in early 2000s, it's a great, classic digicam! Recently purely to feed my nostalgia I've purchased it's next iteration from 2002: the G3 - and I would definitely recommend this one over the G2, it has some significant upgrades, like ex. built in ND filter and 35-140mm lens (f/2.0-3.0). Thanks for the video!

Great review once again, loved the cold open! This camera is legendary, as all those early G series, they look like a toy camera and no one can tell that it’s a proper shooter.

Wow, this brings back memories! The G2 was the 2nd digital camera I got for the small advertising firm I worked for at the time. I guess we didn't realise how limited it was, because it was the best we could afford! Used it for some commercial location work, images for printed brochures etc. with the aid of external flash heads. Provided you didn't crop too much, 4 megapixels was enough!

Hey! About the date battery - it's actually really simple to replace. The date battery is inside the battery compartment, just look inside you'd need to pull it out as it's in its own little plastic sleeve. It's a flat CR2016 type you can buy anywhere. And it won't bug you with this godawful set date screen everytime :)

What a hit of nostalgia! My first digital camera...took one of all time favorite photos with this - of our newborn son in my wife's arms in 2004... by the window (you do need a lot of light!). It seemed so amazing coming from film. So fun to see it still brings joy to people, esp. you Ali! My next camera was the Nikon D70, which I still have and which took really beautiful pictures...I think you've been threatening to review that one as well!

I bought a g2 forever ago, loved it and have now bought ALMOST every other g series camera. The g12 is my personal favorite and weirdly enough it pairs with my gfx 50r really well. My two main cameras for sure. The g2/3 are on my shelf always charged and ready to go though, great lil cameras.

Great review, love my G2. Also the memory battery is just a cr2016 watch type battery, it sits just behind the main battery, there’s a little black serrated looking thing, it just slides out n you can pop a new battery in 🤓

My favourite Point&Shoot by far! On a daily basis I use a Canon Ixus 85 IS because it's tiny but whenever I wanna take "serious"-ish photos and don't want to take out my D700 or my E-M5, I happily take out this old G2 and get perfect photos.

I've had a G2 for about a year now. My first digital camera was a Canon PowerShot S50 - a great little camera, that has a lot in common with the G2. Picking up the G2 was like going back about 19 years in time for me - except with all those years of experience, I have gained a lot of understanding about photography, and it shows in how I use the G2 now compared to how I used the S50 back when it was my only camera.

Great video as always! I was in the G-series kick one time until I came across the Olympus C-5050z. Very sharp f1.8 lens, great CCD colours, and it takes AA batteries! I actually found that the C-5050z is far superior to the Canon Power G5 in terms of build quality, ergonomics, optics, and colours.

Here in Australia the only real issue is A) getting my hands on the model I'm after and B) the horrendous cost of second hand cameras. Cool video! I had the G2 and the G3, sold the G2 and kept the G3. It just gets everything right that was wrong with the G2 ( better quality lens, fixed the manual focus and shutter lag issues, 12 bit RAW instead of 10 bit, way better max shutter speed, built in ND filter etc..) but retains the same great image quality from the G2. It's basically an upgraded G2. Love it.

Hey, unrelated but I got a Lumix LX3 based on your review and I love your idea for the wide angle, but I cannot for the life of me find the wide angle lens itself. The adapter, yes, but not the lens. There are generic unbranded ones on eBay only that aren't even the same focal length. Do you know where or how to find one? Conversely, if you have an extra, I'll buy it off you 😅

As usual, excellent review! I love my G2 ! However, when going out on a sunny day I have such a hard time choosing between the G2 and the Olympus C-740. They seem so similar in handling (or lack thereof) and both output wonderful images and colors. Because of you I'm planning on taking the G2 to my next holiday party and shoot lots of flash. Happy Holidays to you and yours! :D

As a Canon owner,it seems that the pics started being nice at around FIVE megapixels. I have owned A G10,G11,G12,and a G15. Like the G15 best, and didn't care for models with flip out screen. But there is just SOMETHING about my G10 that I really really like.

Well done. I have the G10 that I bought new back in the day. It did the job and I really liked the mechanics of the camera. The output did not exceed expectations, but I still get it out to play with it. I had a G1X mk II on it's way as an Ebay purchase, but the USPS has lost it. I am frustrated and now have lost interest to try for another. I do expect to get a refund.

Had one of these in my hands in a thrift store for around $10 about a year ago, looked very clean and well kept. Passed on it because it had no battery so no way to see if it worked. And I had no compact flash card at the time. Kind of regret not taking a chance on it though.

Maybe you also check out the C-4040 in combination with CLA-1 adapter. The autofocus is far superior. You'll get no RAW from this, but if you're happy with black and white, just turn down the contrast, use SHG quality and you get a real gem for social shots. They need some post process for lack of contrast. The button-controls with quick manual focus is somewhat tricky, but works great in practice. I'm still using the camera after 20 years on a weakly base in quite dimm light with iso 400, negative exposure comp and them push the images in post.

Lately I have been obsessed by this camera, funny because I own so many cameras from film to digital to digicams, but I dunno I just love the look of the images straight from the G2. I love the digital noise at ISO 400, you loose some details of course however this reminds me so much of a cheap point n shoot film camera. I have used this in very dim lighting and I could still shoot it at around 1/30th, I have a feeling that ISO 400 for this camera is equivalent to above 3200 for modern cameras, maybe I'm wrong I dunno. Nice strong flash too! I had the silver version but I found a affordable black G2 last month, so now I'm rockin' two ! Speaking of rockin', love the hair!

Thx for this interesting (as always!) review. :-) I once owned a G2 - unfortunately it was stolen a few years ago. :-( In my eyes the G2 felt a bit like "the little sister of the 300D" - back in 2004 i used it f.i. on some bicycle-tours as my compact companion. The image quality was astonishing good - after a bit post processing i sometimes was able to create images, that looked, as if they were shot with a dslr. In my eyes the G2-images already had a bit of the look and feel from the upcoming Canon DSLRs (300D, 10D, 20D etc.) - okay, maybe with a bit more noise and a bit less dynamic, because of this early sensor generation. I also liked about it, that you can use the same batteries as in a 300D or 20D. But you see: I still like (love?) the little G2. A very special little camera. Greetings to OMTC and all the other G2-fans. PS: Later i bought a G6 and a G7. The G6 was also stolen - at least my G7 is still "alive and kicking". As you said: They all are different from each other.
