I loved the memorability of it. One of my favorite things about him is the way he crafts songs that hit you with really cerebral, academic synth music that fades into one of the most accessible hooks on the album. The contrast does a great job of highlighting the effectiveness of simplicity.

I think this album, while it does call back to Daniel's older material, also calls back to the music that he grew up with (as suggested by the song "Memories of Music") and incorporates it into the OPN sound. The touches of post-rock, synth-punk, jazz, and new wave are all genres he grew up with according to interviews he's been doing for this album. "Magic OPN" was Daniel looking back on his musical career, while "Again" is Daniel looking back on his whole life.
@shelly-11 ай бұрын
100%. In the press release it was named "a speculative autobiography" - it's a look back but also questions what his music could have sounded like if some variables were changed out (if that makes sense). Viewing the album from that angle makes it seem even more wonderful :p

One thing I can give to Daniel is that no matter what, he ALWAYS knows how to create unique sonic textures. I've pretty much only listened to 2 of his albums more than once (Fall Into Time and Replica, if you were wondering), but the first listen of every album he has always makes me think about how tf he even made the music that's playing. For an electronic musician, I think creating something otherworldly is one of the greatest things that they can achieve so I'd give a high recommendation to any OPN album.

the biggest difference for me is that opn stopped sounding 'new' and 'groudnbreaking' 'setting the trend' etc and is more like a nostalgic experience now. I guess its going back to it's roots of rift era symbolically.
@SQUIZZLER2411 ай бұрын
Interesting really that pretty much all my favourite tracks from this album appear in the lowest-rated bit of this review… ‘A Barely Lit Path’ just seems to me like an easily-digestible version of OPN’s music to gain traction for the album. On the other hand, tracks like ‘Krumville’, ‘World Outside’ and ‘On An Axis’ I thought were an excellent blend of retrospective sounds of his, but crammed with new and different textures and colours. Tracks like ‘Plastic Antique’ and ‘Nightmare Paint’ are some of his all-time best work in my opinion. I honestly feel this is the best thing he has done in a long time. ‘Age Of’ was generally good, ‘Magic’ kind of felt disconnected, but ‘Again’ really hit the mark in my opinion. This is pushing a 9 for me.

I don't really know what you mean by again being a look back on opn's musical career to be honest. To me it included so much material that really just sounded foreign to much of what he's made before that it felt more like a look back on the music Daniel himself was shaped by. Not his own sound.
@whoopss876511 ай бұрын

Damn, kinda wish you had picked up on the Russian Mind and Zones Without People callbacks. Like you said, his discography is pretty vast, but it’d be a disservice to just recount things only as deep as eccojams (which he is definitely not as averse to as you may think, as per his recent AMA). Last thing I’ll say is this; this may be just because I’m a hardcore fan of his and know way too much about his history and inspos, but this ties together far more cohesively than Magic. It feels like his personal engagement of music, both from and before him, is being filtered through a version of Daniel he’s trying to compartmentalize in his middle age, but is ultimately alienated from, given the kind of fatalistic but accepting final track.

Finally! The Body Trail getting the love it deserves. I love OPN. I desperately wanted to love this album; and for a moment, I did, but it didn't last. A Barely Lit Path is easily the best track from the album, and probably my favorite piece of his to date, but there is an epic nature the track has that the rest of the album simply did not. Don't get me wrong. I do thoroughly enjoy the album, but it's not making the splash that I hoped it would. There are a few great moments though, and I will enjoy them for years to come. Favorites: Again, Locrian Midwest, The Body Trail, Memories of Music, Ubiquity Road, A Barely Lit Path Least favorite: Nightmare Paint
