Oneshot and Multishot ESC Flashing guide

IF YOU ARE FLASHING MULTISHOT PLEASE SEE THE NOTES BELOW
PART 1: Flashing your multicopter ESCs with Oneshot or Multishot!
In this tutorial we look at how to get BLhelisuite working with 'one-wire-passthrough' so you can flash or upgrade your ESCs with one simple USB connection to your flight controller. As well as upgrading your ESC firmware we will see how simple it is to switch over to Multishot using the same software, if you so desire!

Multishot notes: Your motors will not operate until you enable multishot function in the cleanflight CLI. Do the following (betafligh 2.6.1)
1. Leave oneshot enabled very inportant for this version of betaflight.
2. in the cli type: set use_multishot =ON (then press enter)
3. type: save (press enter)
If you are on betaflight 2.7.0 do the following instead:
1. in cli type: set fast_pwm_protocol = MULTISHOT (press enter)
2. type: save (press enter)
If you are on betaflight 2.8.1 do the follwing instead:
1. in cli type: set fast_pwm_protocol = MULTISHOT (press enter)
2. type: save (press enter)
NOTE: ONESHOT WILL DISABLE AUTOMATICALLY , this is normal now in this version.
*Further notes* If you are using the new Betaflight configurator on firmware 2.8.1 or higher, you can now select multishot straight from the config page! No CLI required.

+NJ Tech So far so good, after a little fail at the beginning with the ESCs calibration; i did not wait enough until the ESCs entered in calibration mode; i finally managed to setup everything nicely, min_throttle=1050 and max_throttle=1950! Time to fly :)

+ABMNS PRODUCTION its noticeably smoother. See what you think. 1050 is a good min throttle point, i tried lower (1025 which sounded fine) and it caused an occasional motor de-sync. So i think your min is about where the sweet spot is on the bees. Enjoy!

hi. im trying to learn this and have a problem. i bought kingkong 90gt 4in1 esc and connected it to my old flight controller. i got everything on no smoke. i been soldering for a long time so i was very carefull to put it back the same way it was. which was very easy but i could not get it to arm. i got on betaflight and update the firmware thinking it might be that and rebound my taranis which i do see in the receiver tab. and when i get to motors tab i see it showing up as if working but motors wont spin. blheli shows the 4 boxes but it says a error code when trying to read. nothing seems to work. plz help if you have time.

okay I'm trying to get multi.s to work on bf I've tried several different ways, I have a spf3 and little bee pro tired bf 2.8 & .7.1 and esc didn't want to calibrate; also have tried, blheli 14.4&.5; tried race flight and everything works. Any suggestions. And yes I went to cli command and put: set fast_pwm_protocol=multishot....

Tnx for the explanation. I have a few sets of Racerstar ESCs (blheli_s) which are sold with the description '[...] Support Oneshot42 Multishot [...]'. I don't see Racerstar in that list of RS2K's custom firmwares though and my knowledge of multishot kind of ends here. Any tips?

BLheli_S doesn't need flashing with the individual protocols, that's why, those ESCs understand all those protocols right out of the box. it will automatically switch to multishot or oneshot42 when you select them in betaflight :) try it you will see. super easy!

Hi NJ tech I just had two quick questions. The first being i used betaflight configurator, instead of writing anything in cli, can i just go to multishot in the configuration tab. and the 2nd being why is it that in the first case we flash all 4 but in the very last case when install the hex file we only install it on one?

Hey, you do install it on all four, i just did one to save time and not make the video too long :) Yes, it is fine to select multishot in the new betaflight configurator, but only if you are running betaflight 2.8.1 or higher! Older versions might not actually work with the new configurator. Only way to confirm on an older version is to check in the CLI.

yeah im sure you can, as long as there is a file for it. Pretty old esc though! This video is kind of obsolete because everything is handled by the raceflight configurator. If youre not using raceflight then honestly i would suggest going with a set of escs that run dshot600

no im pretty sure there is a specific multishot file for those you will need to download and flash. Only the new 32bit BLheli-S ESCs will autodetect multishot. The CLI info is in the description :)

no, you can flash the latest version straight onto the ESC, its not like an upgrade, its a rewrite of firmware. Just make sure it's the correct one for your ESC and you are good to go.

Thanks for another great tutorial. I received some LittleBee's last week and they came with 14.3 flashed on them, Damped Light wasn't enabled by default. I upgraded them to 14.4 and it still had to be enabled manually. Do you need to use the Beta version of blheli suite to get 1 wire passthrough to work with betaflight flashed? I had to flash to cleanflight to get mine to work, and then flashed back to betaflight.

+Bludz FPV Hey no problem! So that's really weird about your bees, but at least it's easy to check and fix. When you upgraded to 14.4 did you 'copy current settings' or load up the defaults? I can't remember which version of BLHELISUITE specifically started working with one-wire passthrough, as it has for a while, but if the option for '(cleanflight)' is in the interface drop-down menu, then yes it does. One thing i will point out is that it IS fairly recently that Flight controllers which use virtual com ports, like the lumenier Lux have now gained support for one-wire passthrough. As usual there are a few pieces to the puzzle to get everything talking :)

+NJ Tech Good call on me copying the settings rather than using the new defaults when I upgraded the firmware, not 100% sure, but I probably did. Just looked into the issue I had with passthrough and betaflight firmware and found this as the 1st release note for Betaflight 2.6.1. Very long waited VCP passthrough thanks to 4712! (You do need latest blhelisuite! www.mediafire.com/download/9bwzbfzmfpv7j4i/BLHeliSuiteBeta144051.zip) The link takes you to download the BETA version of blhelisuite, not just the latest version. is VCP passthrough different to 1wire passthrough or are they the same?

+Bludz FPV yea, VCP = virtual com port :) certain boards like the lumenier lux use a VCP for their USB connection, until recently those boards were unable to utilise one-wire passthrough. But now it is supported, hence those notes. When buying a Flight Controller, that was a real deal breaker for me, it had to support one-wire passthrough, thankfully this clever update now means they all will!

Great video, I flashed my UBAD 30 amps, only problem I have is that when i try to arm motors they wont, but the throttle will work, and when switch for arm motors is off position, it arms the motors but not throttle input what so ever....

just to be sure, when flashing multishot to ESC, we need to flash each ESC with the hex file. in your video, you only selected ESC#1, flashed, then disconnected. what about the other three ESCs?

+Connor Mullan because blheliS natively supports multishot there is no need to flash anything. Rs2k added the start up tone for fun when writing the multishot protocol for the older escs but for him to write and support just a startup tone for blheliS escs is unlikely to happen I'm afraid.

Looking to do this process with LittleBee 30A ESC's, using KISS FC and KISS software, on a mac.....One of my ESC's has a newer version than some of my older ones, and runs totally different. Is there a quick and easy solution?

hmmm, I didn't think Kiss software supported blheli passthrough, and only their own ESCs. Which means you can't do it I'm afraid. Maybe passthrough will work if you install Betaflight on that KissFC first, then you can use the blheli chrome app (which is awesome!) to flash and adjust all of them at once..

I'm sure your right. I haven't seen anyone trying it either, but figured it was worth asking since it'd be very cool if it did. To follow up with another question then, I do have a quad running betaflight through an SPF3 flight controller, same ESC's. If I could reflash those, I'd just swap em out onto my KISS frame and recalibrate. Do you think thats possible?

Do you need both signal and ground wire connected? I do not use ground wire on Esc's use power ground - assume it will still work.

+MrMasemu It's actually not a great idea im afraid. Although in most cases it technically still is just a common ground, there does seem to be something that oneshot and multishot don't like, and i from what ive read it has something to do with motor braking. A few users have experienced some motor de-sync and other nasty problems. In short, my advice is definitely keep the ground wires connected!

+NJ Tech I've had this set-up for 4 months know and have not had a problem using oneshot. When I test resistance across signal ground and power ground they are connected. I'm still a beginner when it comes to radical flying however so maybe I haven't experienced the problem as I don't fly near the limit of it's capability. Hey, im running BF ver 3.0.1 flashed my dys xm 20a esc to the latest rev 14.8, in the config set to multishot, arm but motor wont spin. Is there anything got to do with the min and max throttle values?

Go to the multishot page(link in description) and search that thread for flycolor. I 'think' you are right that the 20A version will work , but the question has been answered before in there so please check before you try it.

hey mate sorry to pick your brain again but since I flashed the multishot firmware to my esc's yesterday when I power the quad up it does its start up and then the motors are twitching slightly for some reason. any idea what that might be please chap?

i followed exactly like you did i have the same esc.. on blheli rev 14.4 did not download the pro version as warned.. i get the imperial march once connected, but motors wont run at all.. went back to original blheli 14.4 and works fine. tried again and still no luck. what am i missing?

+RC Pilot you mean you have multishot?? Blheli doesnt play the imperial march tone. If so, you probably haven't enabled multishot in betaflight :) go to the CLI and type: set use_multishot =ON then type: save NOTE: leave oneshot *enabled* in the configurator; very important.

I'm having the same issue as a lot of other guys here. I have littlebee 30's and I've tried 14.4 blheli with 14.4 multishot and I can't arm I've tried 14.5 blheli and 14.5 multishot and still can't arm. when I go back to regular blheli all is well. I've tried this on Betaflight 2.6.1 and the new 2.7...... any help would be great or if it has been answered please point me in the right direction. Thanks a lot for what you do!

i honestly dont know why so many people spread these rumours, ive put at least 20 sets of little bees on mutishot and theyve all been absolutely perfect. My advise is to make sure you get the correct hex file as its easy to get the wrong one loaded on and most likely been the cause of others burning up. Honestly though, from this point on i would strongly recommend moving to BLheliS as soon as possible. They work flawlessly with all the protocols and what most people are running outside of the Kiss environment.

if your motors are getting hot then chances are D is too high. I would suggest looking at my pid tuning guide and start from scratch with tuning for multishot.

+Arnel Apurada Multishot works great on the littlebees, that's what i use :) just follow this guide carefully to flash your ESCs. No problem on the rev5 and 6 Naze, just make sure you are running Betaflight on them, as it has the feature to enable multishot to work. I can recommend betaflight 2.6.1 for this very highly.

+fpv flyby im not too up on autoshot, but my understanding is that it auto selects to oneshot or fast pwm (probably 400hz) when you select them in the GUI of your flight controller, whatever one you are using. So there shouldn't be any programming to do. Just enable oneshot and it should work.

correct me if im wrong, but the regular littlebees arent multi escs the have an f330 chip; for multi shot you need f390 or f390x chip for your esc to actually be multi shot

+rio_ lld mutishot was tested extensively by RS2K (the coder) on F330 and F390 chips, and the littlebees were on the bench along with quite a few others with hundreds of data logs showing great results and full compatibility. The main benefit is the big reduction in latency and slightly increased resolution. some tested f330 escs showed 240 steps of throttle information at up to 32khz, whilst the 390's and above were potentially capable up to 64khz. (diminishing return argument valid i guess - and looptime relevant) pop onto the forum and drop a question for RS2K, im not qualified to answer! :) what i can tell you is the reaction in the quad was so sensitive (on my LB20As) that i had to tighten the gimbals down in my tx so the centre spring stopped coming out in flight, its that fast! Oneshot never did this. Ive had much more success in a tighter tune over oneshot too. (this is all BLH 14.4 and earlier mind, ive not tried 14.5 yet)

flashed my little bee 20a with multishot.. got the starwars theme no problem. updated to 2.6.1 betaflight but now my motors wont start via tx or in cli. flashed escs back to 14.4 and they work again. what wud be the issue

+NJ Tech just updated to 2.6.1 and hovered it and within ten seconds i got an extremely fast death roll into the ground .. what would cause this? would it be the fact i have super expo, airmode and arm all on one switch?

+Juanamo FPV those flip outs can be caused by a few different issues. First of all make sure you calibrate the escs properly. set configurator to 1000-2000 min throttle/maxthrottle. Then do your throttle calibration. Once done find the min throttle figure by spinning the motors in the motors tab of cleanflight until they all spin without coughing or stuttering. Now set that fig as your min throttle figure (mine was about 1045). Also because of the deadband in BLheli at the top throttle, set your max throttle to 1955 (this is actually the point at which your motors will hit top throttle - anything over that is actually in deadband) try that and let me know how you get on. Also, regarding super expo, i found anything over 55 can start to cause issues so dont go too mad with that. If youre still having issues, send me a PM on RCGroups (im Neilius) and we can troubleshoot it properly :)

NJ Tech, hi mate wonder if you can help me. I've downloaded blheli suit but when i plug my board in its not picking anything up. I'm using a sp racing f3 board running betaflight and 30A fvt little bees. When i plug into betaflight it connects just fine but blheli not picking up my board. I only want to get on because my esc's don't seem to have active braking turned on and want to obviously turn it on. Thanks.

are you plugging in the main battery too before connecting to BLHeli suite? Without that the ESCs wont boot up.

also, i highly recommend the chrome GUI blheli configurator app now instead (get from the chrome app store). Its much simpler to use and very robust in my experience. You should see a connection to the com port when you load it (i always load it up once connected and battery plugged in) then read escs. What ESCs are you using?

also, make sure you have betaflight closed and not connected at the time because that will be sharing and using up the com port!

Here is the crazy thing whats happening Just taken it on my lawn Holding it down The flight mode is stable Motors start when armed Thats fine As soon as there is any slight movement to the craft It goes crazy Like the motors go in full mode Bare in mine i am holding this on a baord from the top of the battery It is level and the motors are in Idle Why would they spin so crazy? I done this last night and i nearly lost months of hard work to the damage It is if the stablizers are all over the place Iam guessing Any help or ideas I just want to fly this bloody thing Thanks for getting back to me so quick

Great video NJ, you just got one more follower. One question, I'm pretty sure you've seen bardwell's follow up vid on multishot (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKHHf5aIqrh2pKs ) He says that in order to really get multishot's effect you have to run at 4khz motor update rate (pid process denom), so what are your thoughts on that and in my case I'm running betaflight configurator 2.9, I wonder if I have to do those cli commands to really get multishot's effect . Yes you certainly wont feel any real difference until you're running multishot at 4K PID rate and above. In the betaflight configurator you simply set the looptime to 4K or higher if your board support it. And select 4K or higher for the ESC update speed, or higher if your ESCs support it.

the SPF3 doesnt have the headroom unfortunately. the CPU load would go to 100% if you run 4k/4k and it just wouldnt arm. So you have to sacrifice that im afraid.

lol i missed that all i seen was no antenna :) I have a quick question when i do a punchout its almost like it was dropping a arm almost crashed today but saved it had to baby the throttle to recover everything was ice cold when it came down im running littlebee30 blheli s and had oneshot123 on betaflight moved that to multishot idk if that will fix it also i changed motors went from cobra 2206 2100 to Thrust 2205 2650kv wonder if it might be timing

9 out of 10 times I see this happen the culprit is the min throttle value being set too low causing a low rpm desync. Raise your min throttle a decent amount and re test.

NJ Tech I bet you that's it because I like a really low minimum throttle I love that hang time but I'm not loving that desync LOL yeah I usually get it to where the motors just start to spin and then I bump it Up 5 more clicks from there I will try 10 clicks thanks NJTech

tricky one as some have unbranded escs, so it's tough to know what the right file to flash is. you might need to do some research to find out what the esc is. if you flash the wrong file bad things can happen :)
