OneTigris Backwoods Bungalow Camping In Hurricane Rain | Sauteed Chicken of the Woods Mushrooms
Camping in the OneTigris Backwoods Bungalow during the remnants of Hurricane Zeta passing though. Technically a tropical storm at that point and although we did get the rain, luckily for me the high winds did not get too bad for me and I was protected by being deep in the woods with lots of strong trees surrounding me.

Got you beat, went fly fishing on an edge of a hurricane. It was moving in, wasn't really here when I started. Within 3 hours it got bad. Less than 4 miles from saltwater on a peninsula. Ocean just over a land mass. Rained me off a pier, lost a $40 hat. Took me 30 minutes to pull apart the compact travel fly rod, apparently it was slightly wet when put together. Being slippery didn't help. The wife wasn't impressed. Man, I love the sound of rain on a tent, used to have a surplus canvas 2 man Marine Corp. You should look into hammock sleeping, rain tarp, under quilt. When we used to camp out in the woods, buddy and I, we managed on several occasions to pitch the tent in a spot that didn't drain but filled up. Yeah those potatoes aren't bad, lots of flavors, and water only, no milk, oddly a comport food. Got a Firebox Nano stove. It can use an alcohol stove, gas, those fuel tablets and wood. It's really small, fits in a pocket. Only problem is it can be tough to light in damp, wet weather and it requires constant babysitting, feeding twigs. Being able to use wood, or fuel tablets is a good backup.
@DansEverythingOutdoors
@DansEverythingOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you have me beat. I also have the nano but find it a lot of work to use with wood. Does work well with tablet or alcohol but only for hot water or coffee. I sleep mostly with a hammock and tarp but also like to sleep in a tent every now and then. Love the sound of the wind and rain on my tent, tarp or metal roof of my home. Not sure I would want to be right off the coast in a hurricane. Although it does sound like an adventure to tell your friends and family all about.

Just a suggestion but a marlin spike hitch on the bowline end makes for easier setup and take down. Just pull the line through the bowline and use a small stick to create the hitch.

LOL. I think about that most times I pull the line all the way through that bowline but I am too lazy to bend over an pick up a stick for a toggle. Thanks for pointing that out though. It is much faster to take it down that way.

That's a great idea. I do something similar where I pull up the middle to create a gable end. It pools the water off very good. This trip I did not do it though. Just raising or lower one of the ends is almost as effective.

I live near a state park and do some stealth camping. I usually set up a "ranger roll" using the Helikon Tex poncho (coyote camo), the Swagman Roll and a military woobie with a Sarma military mat that has side wings to protect the bed roll. Under the mat I place a windshield reflector pad to increase the R-value should it get really cold. I have used the OneTigris Bungalow 2.0 on regular camping trips but for stealth camping I just pull a loose 5X7 tarp over my bed roll...sort of cowboy camping technique. That way should I have to scurry out of there I just gather everything together in the tarp. I use the alcohol stove as well, Trangia I believe it's called. I bring a dehydrated meal, boil water for a hot lemon and honey drink, with oatmeal for breakfast. I would prefer coffee but the aroma might give me away. I usually stop along the way to get coffee before driving home. I appreciate your showing your loadout as you packed. Quite often I use other hikers' loadout list to compare them to mine...we all have different gear ideas and sometimes other ideas work better.

@DansEverythingOutdoors
@DansEverythingOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I put mine up higher when sitting underneath the awning or I put a pole in the middle to create a gable end peak in the middle. when lying in the tent I lower one end so water runs down.

I purchased the 1Tigris Backyard Bungalow tent early in the Spring, but haven't used it yet. Thank you for the video. I have been trying to decide whether to use it or a tarp and hammock when I go to Ohio in two weeks. As a woman, I am more partial to using a tents I will be able to have a place to change clothes in private when there are a lot of male campers around. I had forgotten about the open flaps at the bottom for ventilation. Do you ever dig a small trench around your tent perimeter? I think I will put up the tent in my backyard this week after I cut the grass. One question: A tree in my back yard has a lot of fungi or mushrooms growing from the base up the tree. Is there a poisonous mushroom that mimics chicken-of-the-woods?

What was it that you packed for food, thats my problem when I go out camping I don't really know what to take I've seen other videos where people are taking out stakes don't they spoil before you have time to cook it For example what would you take on a 3 day trip?! I know rice is a must but what else would you take...I would take rice, beans, and some stakes but the stakes would most likely spoil or ill take dry ice and the stakes are frozen solid
@DansEverythingOutdoors
@DansEverythingOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Epenaloza52, There are a lot of options of what you can take with you. Most of these videos on youtube of people cooking steak are because they are just over night trips. If the weather is cold then it is easier to keep things like that cold. I pack simple things like Oatmeal, Rice, powder mash potatoes, Beans, freeze dried meals, powdered milk, trail mix etc.... Then find some mushrooms and squirrel or small game and you have a meal. LOL Enjoy yourself out there.

If you freeze the steak beforehand, then it will slowly (slower if you use a cozy-bag...& even slower than _that_ if you throw a couple of gel freezer-packs in there) thaw out in your pack & in anything but particularly hot weather should carry well for a couple of days. You want to seal it in a ziplock, though, so you don't get defrosting-meat-water all over your other food.

@@mysterylovescompany2657 I've tried that before I bought a small cooler packed it full of meat since I was going out 4 days had 2 ice gels added some ice with salt and went on my merry way I usually have to drive between 4-6 hours and then a few miles in to where I'm camping well by the time I had gotten to my destination everything had thaw out it was still cold but not frozen and it was during summer so where I'm located it can go up to the 100s.
