As an older rider, I can tell you, you are doing the right thing. After a few hundred miles you'll know what makes you fall, so you avoid it. If you ride pavement exclusively, be careful when you start trails, as they can be a different matter. Practices that have helped me are doing figure 8s forever, in both my normal and switch stances. Welcome aboard!

I’m 41 and love my GT. I take it all over the city and always get asked about it. Took me about 3-4 weeks before I felt comfortable but now I’m feeling stable and carving and can ride thru most common obstacles without thinking about it. I’m definitely not a speed demon I just like to cruise around 15-20mph and enjoy the ride but I definitely took my fair share of falls when I was first starting out. I just got my first OneWheel, a GT and I absolutely love it! I have a skating background from when I was younger. I did halfpipes and handrails and stuff. My day one on OneWheel was so fun and comfortable I had one bump I launched at probably 14 mph but I was able to bail and run it out.. I was focused that time so good bail! Funny enough two days later was riding it and the fam was on regular bikes.. I smoked them and at one point slowed way down to look back for them. I did this a few time, but this one time in the shade in front of me was a tiny weird dip in the road. Luckily I was going super slow and it wasn’t a nosedive but I hit that dip not looking and the board flew out from under me (forward). I went up and down like a slipping on ice type of fall and my shoulder was sore from catching myself! Definitely just always stay focused. Get in a flow state and enjoy. Complacency has big consequences on these unlike a skateboard or something. Other than that I feel confident that all shouldn’t happen too much and I’m already back on and floating all over Tahoe! 🙌🏼

I'm 60, just got my GT, and I am really struggling with it! Lol First try and fell a few times just crawling, cuz I'm having trouble with stopping and dismounting, and heal to toe balance. Pulled a ligament or two in my already doomed knees (wrecked from downhill skiing for the first 25/30 years of my life... but I had an awesome time!) Nothing as serious as your shoulder injury, but I've done not even a full 2 miles yet! Not sure why I'm so nervous on it, because I love it honestly. I just know it's gonna take me a long time to "get it", which is frustrating, but fine since I know I need to take it slow! Fyi... I wear "ATGAT"... "all the gear all the time"... cuz I'm too old to get laid up and miss out on so much fun! Thank you for your insightful and helpful video. @@therealbergexperience5640 it’s me again lol. Crashed pretty hard yesterday. I’m learned a hard and very painful lesson with what they call “kickback!” I had the GT set on “float” in the programming, came to a medium size hill, added more pressure to the front foot pad, cruising up the hill nicely at about 12-15 MPH and out of nowhere the board did a nose dive and stopped immediately! Flew right off the board and had to go to the emergency room. Deep road rash in seven different places on my body. Very irritating because I felt that I did nothing wrong to deserve this crash? I’m still waiting for a response back from Future Motion, trying to research if I had my board set on Highline or Apex? Would this still have happened? If this keeps happening I’m cutting up my board into 1000 pieces and sending it back to them. Betcha the next generation GT, they’ll have it figured out how to stop Kick back from happening? Grrr. It’s all good though, I’m hoping the different settings to Apex will resolve this problem? I hope? Lol

Biggest game changers for me were wearing running shoes instead of skate shoes, switching tires to the craft and ride Burris, and my airpad. The airpad is so much easier on your feet, the tire change makes me less scared any time I have to briefly go on grass, and the shoes keep my feet from going numb as quickly. It is only a matter of time before you go down again. I’ve crashed mine 3 times. Luckily no serious injuries yet. One thing that has saved me a lot is the flight fins because they allow you to lock in and hold onto the board more on the unexpected bumps. Also that stock tire is really hard and tends to bounce you around a lot more. Stay safe man and look forward to seeing more videos.

@@therealbergexperience5640 I can hear it when you talk, man you're hooked and I love it! Tire preference is a subjective thing and whether you ride offroad or primarily on the streets/pavement can inform your choice. The GT being a new board and having 6.5 inch rims instead of 6" like the XR, has fewer aftermarket tire options to choose from. The two I can think of off of my head are the TFL enduro and the TFL street pro. One's a slick tire and the other is a treaded, both really solid tires! Worth noting, both tires are sold out in most places atm.

As a result I experienced a death wobble, was too unstable to try to slow it down so I aimed to bail. Didn’t clear the board. Ended up with one foot on the asphalt and one on the accelerator. Powered into doing the splits. Pulling both the groin muscle and hamstring on my right leg. My knee slammed into the asphalt at 17.5 kms (sideways blow). Thankfully nothing broken. Very thankful I was wearing Alien Rides knee and elbow guard bundle. As hitting your knee from the side can really mess it up. April 6, 2021 is when I had a bad fall. I traumatically ripped my top rotator cuff (supraspinatus, sorry for the spelling.) off the bone. Partially tore a bicep muscle. And had a tear in my labrum. It was a mysterious nosedive to me, but I think I know why it happened. I was going between 5-9 miles a hour. Ended up having surgery on July 19, 2021. I had 5 months of physical therapy but ended up having to go back to work way earlier then I should have. At the 5 month mark I was only up to lifting 5 pound weights at therapy. I had my Pint and my XR for a year when it happened. It is said that it takes a year for the rotator cuff to properly heal. So I added another year to it. I have not rode for 2 years now. On the 2 year anniversary of my crash, this last April, I was going to have my roommate help me do a fun video of me getting back on the board. But weather and other things prevented it. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about riding and getting back on it. The crappy part is that I have to start from zero again with endurance and all that stuff. I do spicy stuff on my channel ever so often so I guess I can incorporate getting back on the board for the first time with something spicy. 3 years ago I bought these boards and have loved them. I love the true feeling of floating. I’m not a speedster, the fastest I’ve gone is 15 miles an hour. I loved wakeboarding and this is what it makes me feel like, but on concrete. The carving like I’m on water is so fun. I bought them when I was 48, crashed at 49, spent my 50th in a super sling. I will get back on my XR very soon. 2 years has been agonizing to not be able to ride. I will do this.

Wearing the gear just cause, you never expect the fall to happen... But the gear should always be there, for the eventuality.

Try learning the snowboard to gain the muscle memory. Similar mechanics but the snow is a lot more forgiving.

first thing wear gear and learn to jump and run it out dont ride beyond your limits. 46 too been riding 3 years you gotta learn to bail no hands out break your wrist and you have to be looking 20 ft ahead constantly
@therealbergexperience5640 Жыл бұрын
Most definitely. Thank you my friend. All great advice. I already learned enough the hard way 😂 wrist is actually the thing I was worried about but I hit the same bone most people do. That collar bone. Man on man did itvhurt

That Onewheel has just as much rights in my house that the wife does 😭😂 nah. Just joking. Almost though 🤣 nah let me stop. My wife is my queen. Gotta give it to her. She actually bought that 1wheel

I know bud. Your right. I mean I’m not riding 20 on a regular. Go up to. Big tell me your never tempted to go on a quick ride. No gear 😂 I know I’m not the only 1. But your right bro. I’m wearing the gear. I learned the hard way.
@Zetler Жыл бұрын
NO. Start and ride on the GT or don't start at all. Onewheel is all about torque and power. Once you eliminate the user error the more torque and power you have, the safer you are. Despite all its power, the GT can reach its performance envelope very easily and the limit can come up on you fast based on how heavy you are. You need to remember that the Onewheel isn't like a bike or a scooter. When the bike or a scooter doesn't have enough power, it stops. When the Onewheel doesn't have enough power, it will suddenly nose dive at 15-20 mph sending you straight to the hospital.

Don't push it to 20 mph. C'mon...rolling at 10 or 15 mph (or anything faster than a jog) is plenty fast for us 50+ year olds. I love the GT...nothing like it. Rode one for the past couple weekends (rode a friends second board)...and fell in love. I have a lot of learning to do...but I'm hooked.

Great review. Falling is part of the process unfortunately. Age ain't nothing but a number, I've seen 70 year old's riding. I'm 51. Keep on floating!!!

In apex you can get a little more but I’m good at 15. I just got up to 20 a few times and it’s never felt great. Cruising at 15 is my speed.
