Chief showing up in a camper reminded me of a story my brother (cw3 medevac pilot) told me about when he was in an exercise over in Lithuania or something (one of the Baltics, idk which one). They were stuck in an open field with little to do, it was cold, everyone was miserable, and desperate for coffee. As luck would have it they had a coffee maker, but no electricity. So they made they decision to start up his Blackhawk and make one of the world’s most expensive cups of coffee.

Having served in a unit in Germany that never considered going to the field in summer (because the bad guys would never conceive of attacking when the conditions were good), I totally get this one. We practiced being miserable because that's what we did in 1st ID, even though you really don't need to practice that since it comes pretty naturally. Regardless, it has cured me of any desire to go winter camping over the next 40 years :) And God help you if one of your troops got a cold weather injury...

At Fort Leonard Wood, it was funny watching the guys from the West and South get excited seeing snow for the first time. It was even funnier watching them immediately fucking hate the snow and cold during morning PT. It was absolutely wild watching a guy heatcat during a morning run, because he put extra layers on under his PTs
@mightymikethebear27 күн бұрын
I knew someone would mention Fort Leonard Wood in reference to being cold and miserable. One of the most painful things to watch was seeing basic trainees shoveling snow in front of the admin buildings after a snow and ice storm. The drill sergeants were cold and miserable too, so there is a little fairness in the Army.
@Dillon4168924 күн бұрын
@mightymikethebear I dont agree with that. The Drill Sergeants are playing a character. They were hard, mean, and fucked us up, but they would also take their campaign hat off, and completely drop the D.S act and talk to us man to man. Its the Service. So raking leaves, picking up trash on installations, shoveling snow, laying salt in ice, and whatever else, are just task for jobs that need to be done. It seems shitty, but it is preparing the kids to handle things like this in adulthood. Shoveling snow where you live is more relaxed when youre grateful youre not dealing with doing it for the Army

Army training is all about not killing everyone with one of our old fuel camp stoves where you had to lace the pipe out of the top of the tent.

We went to the field in Nov '89 and it was supposed to be good weather. Nothing quite so fun as laying on your back in shift sleeves reconnecting the oil, fuel, and hydraulics lines and the wiring harness for a Blackhawk APU because you can't do it facing the engine as snow falls in your face despite the aircraft crew, including the pilot and co-pilot are trying to block the worst of the wind and snot with ponchos. They sure were appreciative when the bird started on the 1st try. They even called for a truck to take me back to my Co area after I warmed up with coffee in their ready tent. I almost felt sorry for sniping the pilot the day before using the MILES trick.
